Southern River terrapins ( Batagur affinis) are among the most critically endangered turtles in the world. To augment the Cambodia population, a head-start program was established for the endemic subspecies Batagur affinis edwardmolli in 2006, and in 2015, prerelease health assessments were performed on 70 subadults (hatch years, 2006-2011). Combined choanal/cloacal swab samples ( n = 70) were collected and screened by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Mycoplasma, herpesvirus, and ranavirus. Cloacal samples ( n = 50) were also collected and cultured for Salmonella sp...

An optimization process with a cheap and abundant substrate is considered one of the factors affecting the price of the production of economical 2,3-Butanediol (2,3-BD). A combination of the conventional method and response surface methodology (RSM) was applied in this study. The optimized levels of pH, aeration rate, agitation speed, and substrate concentration (maltodextrin) were investigated to determine the cost-effectiveness of fermentative 2,3-BD production by metabolically-engineered Klebsiella oxytoca KMS005...

Central to any reaction mechanism study, and sometimes a challenging job, is tracing a transition state in a reaction path. For the first time, electrostatic potentials (ESP) of the reactants were used as guiding tactics to predict whether there is a possibility of any transition state in a reaction surface. The main motive behind this strategy is to see whether the directionality nature of the transition state has something to do with the anisotropic natures of the ESP with their embedded directionalities...

Glycine being the simplest amino acid and also having significant astrobiological implications, has meant that intensive investigations have been carried out in the past, starting from its detection in the interstellar medium (ISM) to analysis of meteorites and cometary samples and laboratory synthesis, as well as computational studies on the possible reaction paths. In this present work quantum chemical calculations have been performed to investigate the possible interstellar formation of glycine via two different paths; (1) in a two-step process via a dihydroxy carbene intermediate and (2) through a one-step concerted mechanism, starting from reactants like CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]NH, CO, CO2, H2O and H2...

Damage caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands remains an important concern on forest tree species. The pathogen causes root and collar rot, stem cankers, and dieback of various economically important Eucalyptus spp. In South Africa, susceptible cold tolerant Eucalyptus plantations have been affected by various Phytophthora spp. with P. cinnamomi considered one of the most virulent. The molecular basis of this compatible interaction is poorly understood. In this study, susceptible Eucalyptus nitens plants were stem inoculated with P...

"How the fundamental life elements are created in the interstellar medium (ISM)?" is one of the intriguing questions related to the genesis of life. Using computational calculations, we have discussed the reaction of CH2=NH, CO and H2O for the formation of glycine, the simplest life element. This reaction proceeds through a concerted mechanism with reasonably large barriers for the cases with one and two water molecules as reactants. For the two water case we found that the extra water molecule exhibits some catalytic role through the hydrogen transport relay effect and the barrier height is reduced substantially compared to the case with one water molecule...

Using computational calculations the potential energy surface (PES) of the reaction between NH and NS has been analysed. The PES of the reaction shows the formation of two very stable species, HNSN and HNNS. Out of these two, HNNS which has the signature N-N linkage was found to be the most stable species in the PES. In view of the highly exothermic nature of the reaction surface, it has been proposed that these two species can possibly be detected in the interstellar space. For the first time it has also been shown that the reaction between the NH and NS can lead to the possible formation of N2via the isomer HNNS, and how the effect of tunnelling can make this reaction very much feasible, even under the extremely low temperature conditions prevailing in the interstellar medium...

RATIONALE: Metabolomics is a qualitative and quantitative measurement of the metabolite content of any biological system under a given physiological status. Due to the chemically diverse nature of these samples, metabolite identification is a difficult task, and development of alternative approaches, such as those based on mass spectrometry (MS), aimed at proper metabolite identification is required. METHODS: Compliance constants, a direct measure of mechanical bond strength, were used for the first time to predict the MS fragmentation patterns of different regional isomers of a ubiquitous plant metabolite, caffeoylquinic acid (CQA)...

Klebsiella oxytoca KMS005 (∆adhE∆ackA-pta∆ldhA) was metabolically engineered to improve 2,3-butanediol (BDO) yield. Elimination of alcohol dehydrogenase E (adhE), acetate kinase A-phosphotransacetylase (ackA-pta), and lactate dehydrogenase A (ldhA) enzymes allowed BDO production as a primary pathway for NADH re-oxidation, and significantly reduced by-products. KMS005 was screened for the efficient glucose utilization by metabolic evolution. KMS005-73T improved BDO production at a concentration of 23.5±0...

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis is targeted for elimination in India through mass drug administration (MDA) with diethylcarbamazine (DEC) combined with albendazole (ABZ). For the strategy to be effective, >65% of those living in endemic areas must be covered by and compliant to MDA. Post the MDA 2011 campaign in the endemic district of Odisha, we conducted a survey to assess: (i) the filariasis knowledge in the community, (ii) the coverage and compliance of MDA from the community perspective, and (iii) factors affecting compliance, as well as the operational issues involved in carrying out MDA activities from the drug distributor's perspective...

The authors report two anatomic cases of median nerve entrapment, which can be one of the causes of carpal tunnel syndrome. Both cases were soft tissue thickening on the distal arm. The first case was the thickening of brachial fascia that resembles the Struther's ligament. The second case was the thickening of the bicipital aponeurosis combined with the supernumerary biceps brachii. Both cases demonstrated the possible cause of median nerve entrapment at the arm, which mimicked the carpal tunnel syndrome that normally occurs at the wrist...

Sucrose-utilizing genes (cscKB and cscA) from Escherichia coli KO11 were cloned and expressed in a metabolically engineered E. coli KJ122 to enhance succinate production from sucrose. KJ122 harboring a recombinant plasmid, pKJSUC, was screened for the efficient sucrose utilization by growth-based selection and adaptation. KJ122-pKJSUC-24T efficiently utilized sucrose in a low-cost medium to produce high succinate concentration with less accumulation of by-products. Succinate concentrations of 51 g/L (productivity equal to 1...

The fidelity of translation selection begins with the base pairing of codon-anticodon complex between the m-RNA and tRNAs. Binding of cognate and near-cognate tRNAs induces 30S subunit of the ribosome to wrap around the ternary complex, EF-Tu(GTP)aa-tRNA. We have proposed that large thermal fluctuations play a crucial role in the selection process. To test this conjecture, we have developed a theoretical technique to determine the probability that the ternary complex, as a result of large thermal fluctuations, forms contacts leading to stabilization of the GTPase activated state...

It has been known that diabetes mellitus is associated with hyperfunction of the adrenal gland. However, the structural changes of adrenal gland in diabetes have rarely been studied. The aims of this study were to investigate the morphological and microvascular alterations in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced long-term diabetic rats. Twelve male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into diabetic (n=8) and control (n=4) groups. Each diabetic rat was induced by an intraperitoneal injection of STZ (60 mg/kg) in citrate buffer (pH 4...

The torque acting on cognate (three base pairs that are matched) "ternary complex" consisting of elongation factor-Tu, guanosine-5'-triphosphate GTP, and aminoacyl-transfer RNA due to induced wrapping of the 30S subunit of the ribosome and the speed with which the ternary complex samples the space allowed by diffusion is determined. Under appropriate conditions, mode coupling speeds up the barrier crossing rate for cognate relative to near-cognate ternary complexes. We determine the flexibility of the ternary complex relative to transfer RNA (tRNA) by a coarse-grained model...
