Rice husk (RH) is a common agricultural waste generated during the rice milling process; however, a major portion is either burned or disposed of in landfills, posing significant environmental risks. In this study, RH waste was transformed into bio-based catalysts via delignification cum in situ growth of MoS2 (DRH-MoS2 ) for efficient pollutant dye removal and microbial decontamination. The developed DRH-MoS2 exhibits nanoflower-like structures with a 2H-MoS2 phase and a narrow band gap of 1.37 eV, which showed strong evidence of photocatalytic activity...

The Six PPEs were prepared using four solvent systems and each filtrate was concentrated to a gummy material to be used in the evaluation. The well-diffusion method was used to evaluate their antimicrobial activity against bacteria typically associated with food spoilage: Escherichia coli , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Salmonella typhimurium , Listeria monocytogenes , Staphylococcus epidermidis , Staphylococcus aureus , and three Bacillus species ...

Prolonging the shelf-life of soursop fruit tea has been of scientific interest currently. This study evaluated the effects of three types of packaging materials of soursop fruit tea (e.g., paper, paper-combined Polyetylen (PE), and aluminum-combined PE) and different storage temperatures (5, 15, 30, and 45°C) on various product characteristics, total polyphenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), total ascorbic acid (TAA), and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH)/2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) free radical scavenging capacity during 4 weeks of storage...

The polysaccharide was extracted from Phascolosoma esculenta (PEP). Two purified polysaccharides (PEP-1 and PEP-2) were obtained by the column chromatography separation method. The molecular weights of PEP-1 and PEP-2 were 33.6 and 5.7 × 103  kDa, respectively. PEP-1 and PEP-2 had the same monosaccharides composition, but their molar ratios varied. The in vitro antioxidant activity of the PEP, PEP-1, and PEP-2 were investigated by scavenging free radicals like 3-ethylbenzoth-iazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), •OH, and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)...

REVIEW

Macropinocytosis (MP), the actin-dependent bulk uptake of extracellular fluids, plays a central role in nutrient scavenging, allowing cancer cells to sustain their growth in the hypoxic and nutrient-deprived microenvironment often found in solid tumours. The lack of soluble nutrients and several oncogenic signalling pathways, with RAS being the most studied, push MP-dependent internalisation of extracellular proteins, which are then digested in the lysosomes, replenishing the intracellular nutrient pools. This review will highlight recent advances in understanding how MP is regulated in hypoxic cancers, how it impinges on chemoresistance, and how different MP cargos facilitate tumour growth...

In vitro maturation (IVM) and cryopreservation of goat oocytes are important for establishing a valuable genetic bank for domesticated female animals and improving livestock reproductive efficiency. C-Phycocyanin (PC) is a Spirulina extract with antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and radical scavenging properties. However, whether PC has positive effect on goat oocytes IVM or developmental competence after vitrification is still unknown. In this study, we found that first polar body extrusion (n = 293), cumulus expansion index (n = 269), and parthenogenetic blastocyst formation (n = 281) were facilitated by adding 30 μg/mL PC to the oocyte maturation medium when compared with the control groups and that supplemented with 3, 10, 100 or 300 μg/mL PC (P < 0...

Urban particulate matter (PM; uPM) poses significant health risks, particularly to the respiratory system. Fine particles, such as PM2.5, can penetrate deep into the lungs and exacerbate a range of health problems, including emphysema, asthma, and lung cancer. PM exposure is also linked to extrapulmonary disorders such as heart and neurodegenerative diseases. Moreover, prolonged exposure to elevated PM levels can reduce overall life expectancy. Senescence is a dysfunctional cell state typically associated with age but can also be precipitated by environmental stressors...

Scavenger receptors participate in a wide range of biological functions after binding to multiple non-self or altered self-ligands. Among them, CD5 and CD6 are lymphocyte scavenger receptors known to interact with different microbial-associated molecular patterns, and the administration of the recombinant soluble ectodomains of human CD5 (rshCD5) and/or CD6 (rshCD6) has shown therapeutic/prophylactic potential in experimental models of fungal, bacterial and echinococcal infections. The latter is a zoonosis caused by the larval stage of the cestode parasite Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, which in humans can induce secondary cystic echinococcosis (CE) after the spillage of protoscoleces contained within fertile cysts, either spontaneously or during surgical removal of primary hydatid cysts...

This study used glucose, fructose, maltose and dextran to explore the effects of different carbohydrates on the Maillard reaction of casein phosphopeptides (CPP). The color parameter results showed that heating time from 1 to 5 h led to brown color, which was consistent with the observed increased in browning intensity. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results verified that four carbohydrates reacted with CPP to produce Maillard conjugates. Fluorescence spectroscopy showed that the Maillard reaction changed the tertiary structure of CPP by decreasing the intrinsic fluorescence intensity and surface hydrophobicity compared with the CPP-carbohydrate mixture...

The gaseous plant hormone ethylene regulates plant development, growth, and responses to stress. In particular, ethylene affects tolerance to salinity; however, the underlying mechanisms of ethylene signaling and salt tolerance are not fully understood. Here, we demonstrate that salt stress induces the degradation of the ethylene receptor ETHYLENE RESPONSE 3 (RhETR3) in rose ( Rosa hybrid ). Furthermore, the TspO/MBR (Tryptophan-rich sensory protein/mitochondrial benzodiazepine receptor) domain-containing membrane protein RhTSPO interacted with RhETR3 to promote its degradation in response to salt stress...
