UNLABELLED: The aim of the study is to evaluate the outcome of a selected group of 24 patients who underwent surgery for refractory ascites, in a 10 years period, 1995-2005. The results of medical and emergency surgical treatment of 55 patients with bleeding esophageal varices were studied. Eighteen patients died (32.7%). Mortality relates to the severity of the liver disease and the number of blood transfusions required. There was a high incidence of recurrent hemorrhage. We recommend definitive porto-sistemic shunt after the bleeding episode has been controled.

Proximal esophagogastrectomy saving only the distal half of the greater curvature of the stomach was retrospectively evaluated in 91 consecutive patients with resectable carcinoma of the gastric cardia.
