BACKGROUND: The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare the outcomes of proximal femoral nail (PFN) and dynamic hip screw (DHS) in treatment of intertrochanteric fractures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Relevant randomized or quasi-randomized controlled studies comparing the effects of PFN and DHS were searched for following the requirements of the Cochrane Library Handbook. Six eligible studies involving 669 fractures were included. Their methodological quality was assessed and data were extracted independently for meta-analysis...

AIM OF THE STUDY: The dynamic hip screw (DHS) often shows a high incidence of therapeutic failure and an impared outcome in the treatment of the unstable pertrochanteric femur fracture (31A2). Therefore often an intramedullary device is recommended. In a retrospective clinical study we examined whether the percutaneous compression plate (PCCP, Gotfried) provides advantages following unstable fractures in comparison to DHS and PFN. METHODS: From January 2002 to April 2007 135 patients with unstable pertrochanteric femur fractures underwent internal fixation with the PCCP (n = 46, age 78...

INTRODUCTION: Trochanteric femur fractures are a typical injury of elderly people and are of significant relevance for their quality of life. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Data on 7252 proximal femur fractures from the department of external quality assurance of the chamber of physicians of Westphalia-Lippe/Germany were analysed. Topics of interest were: patient profile, type of femur fracture, method of treatment, intra- and postoperative complications, mobility before and after fracture...

The aim of the present paper is to compare the results obtained using two osteosynthesis systems developed for the surgical treatment of unstable fractures of the trochanteric region of the femur: the proximal femoral nail (PFN) and the dynamic hip screw (DHS) with trochanteric butt-press plate (TBPP). From December 1997 to November 2000, 173 patients with instable trochanteric fractures (type 31 A-2 and A-3 according to the AO-classification) had osteosynthesis by PFN (n = 122) or DHS/TBPP (n = 51). The average patient age was 74 years (range 27 to 98)...

The dynamic hip screw (DHS) with trochanteric stabilisation plate (TSP) as the extramedullary power transmission system and the proximal femur nail (PFN) as the means of intramedullary stabilisation are both standard in the treatment of unstable trochanteric femoral fractures in the case of old people. A total of 129 patients (average age: 81,5 years) with 31 A2.2 and A2.3 as well as per-/subtrochanteric femoral fractures were treated by means of osteosynthesis with DHS and TSP (n=64) or with PFN (n=65),and the results plotted in a retro-/prospective study...

INTRODUCTION: Fractures of the proximal femur are typical injuries of the elderly. Therefore immediate restoration of weight-bearing capacity and prevention of local complications with the need for of secondary surgical procedures are very important. METHODS: In an experimental test the weight-bearing capacity under alternating load up to 2,000 N and 4,000 cycles was analysed in the newest implants for extramedullary fixation (the DHS with lateral buttress plate, DHS) and for intramedullary fixation (the gliding nail, GN)...
