OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to ascertain the diagnostic efficacy of routine 68 Ga-PSMA imaging conducted 1 h post-injection, in conjunction with delayed imaging performed 3 h post-injection, for differentiating between benign and malignant lesions in prostate cancer (PCa) patients. METHODS: A retrospective assessment was undertaken on 44 prostate cancer patients who had undergone both routine and delayed 68 Ga-PSMA PET/CT scans. Variations in SUVmax and SUVmean values in normal organs, primary prostate cancer sites, metastatic sites, and benign lesions were analyzed...

Pathogenic lagoviruses (Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus, RHDV) are widely spread across the world and are used in Australia and New Zealand to control populations of feral European rabbits. The spread of the non-pathogenic lagoviruses, e.g., rabbit calicivirus (RCV), is less well studied as the infection results in no clinical signs. Nonetheless, RCV has important implications for the spread of RHDV and rabbit biocontrol as it can provide varying levels of cross-protection against fatal infection with pathogenic lagoviruses...

A 51-year-old man with biochemical failure after brachytherapy for prostatic adenocarcinoma (PSA 5 μg/L rising to 6.45 μg/L) underwent a PSMA PET/CT scan. The scan revealed focal 18F-PSMA activity at the right apex suggestive of local residual or recurrent disease. In addition, 18F-PSMA images demonstrated 2 focal 18F-PSMA-avid liver and spleen lesions; both lesions were further evaluated by abdominal MRI, and the final radiological diagnosis was synchronous hepatic and splenic hemangiomas.

Hemangiomas are most common benign liver tumor. Most patients have an excellent prognosis because of the small size and benign nature of tumor. On some occasions, giant liver hemangioma may cause symptoms and significant challenges due to its complication. We report a case of giant liver hemangioma treated with minimal invasive approach by transarterial embolization (TAE). Following three TAE sessions over a specific timeframe, the patient was successfully managed, addressing that TAE may be a useful alternative to hepatic surgery in such cases...

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing biliary tract cancer is difficult because endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is performed fluoroscopically, and the sensitivity of bile cytology is low. Liquid biopsy of bile using targeted sequencing is expected to improve diagnosis and treatment, but few studies have been conducted. In this study, we examined whether liquid biopsy of bile improves the diagnostic sensitivity of biliary strictures. METHODS: A total of 72 patients with biliary strictures who underwent ERCP at Chiba University Hospital between April 2018 and March 2021 were examined...

BACKGROUND: Hepatic adenomas (HAs) are benign, solid liver lesions, which carry a risk of hemorrhage and malignant transformation. In this review article, we highlight advances in the diagnosis and management of HAs. METHODS: A comprehensive review was performed utilizing MEDLINE/PubMed and Web of Science databases with a search period ending September 30, 2023. Using PubMed, the terms "hepatocellular," "hepatic," and "adenoma" were searched. RESULTS: HA has been classified into at least eight subtypes based on molecular pathology, each exhibiting unique histopathological features, clinical considerations, and risk of malignant transformation...

Congenital portosystemic shunts (CPSS) or congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunts (CEPS) is a rare malformation. This congenital anomaly presents with a diverse array of clinical manifestations, ranging from asymptomatic to severe complications such as cardiac failure, pronounced pulmonary hypertension, and widespread pulmonary arteriovenous malformations. CPSS increases the risk of developing benign or malignant liver tumors, including nodular regenerative hyperplasia, focal nodular hyperplasia, hepatic adenoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, and hepatoblastoma...

Castleman disease (CD) is a rare, benign lymphoproliferative disorder with characteristic histopathological features, but variable aetiology, presentation, treatment and prognosis. It is broadly classified based on its location and histopathological features, with unicentric hyaline vascular disease presenting most commonly. Cholangiocarcinoma often remains undetected until advanced stages due to the lack of reliable diagnostic markers. Our goal was to identify a unique secretory protein for cholangiocarcinoma diagnosis and differentiation from other malignancies, benign hepatobiliary diseases, and chronic liver conditions. We conducted bulk RNA-seq analysis to identify genes specifically upregulated in cholangiocarcinoma but not in most other cancers, benign hepatobiliary diseases, and chronic liver diseases focusing on exocrine protein-encoding genes...

Heat shock factors (HSFs) are the main transcriptional regulators of the evolutionarily conserved heat shock response. Beyond cell stress, several studies have demonstrated that HSFs also contribute to a vast variety of human pathologies, ranging from metabolic diseases to cancer and neurodegeneration. Despite their evident role in mitigating cellular perturbations, the functions of HSF1 and HSF2 in physiological proteostasis have remained inconclusive. Here, we analyzed a comprehensive selection of paraffin-embedded human tissue samples with immunohistochemistry...

Passenger lymphocyte syndrome is an immunologic disorder observed in solid organ and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation in which B lymphocytes within a donor graft are transferred to the recipient and subsequently produce circulating antibodies against host red blood cell antigens. The syndrome is most likely to occur in minor ABO blood group mismatched or Rh incompatible transplantation. Although generally mild and self-limited, the resulting haemolytic burden has the potential to increase the risk of infection, graft failure and death...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Autophagy plays roles in esophageal pathologies both benign and malignant. Here, we aim to define the role of autophagy in esophageal epithelial homeostasis. METHODS: We generated tamoxifen-inducible, squamous epithelial-specific Atg7 (autophagy related 7) conditional knockout mice to evaluate effects on esophageal homeostasis and response to the carcinogen 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4NQO) using histological and biochemical analyses. The chemokine 20 (CCL20) is a member of the CC chemokine family and plays a role in tumor immunity and autoimmune disease. This work investigated the value of CCL20 as a serum diagnostic marker for primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Based on the data of hepatocellular carcinoma patients in the TCGA database, the up-regulated genes encoding secretory proteins were analyzed in each pathological stage, and the candidate marker CCL20 gene was selected. Serum concentrations of CCL20 in patients with primary HCC, benign liver disease, and healthy subjects were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)...
