AIMS: To psychometrically evaluate the Impact of Nighttime Urination (INTU) questionnaire, a new patient-reported outcome measure developed to assess the impact of nocturia on health and functioning in a multicenter, behavioral modification (fluid restriction) study. METHODS: Participants aged 50-95 years with at least two voiding episodes/night for ≥6 months completed voiding diaries and the INTU on 3 consecutive days during weeks 1 and 2 (same day recall) and completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Nocturia Quality of Life Questionnaire (N-QOL) at baseline and days 8 and 15...

We investigate the impact of dipper status on cardiac structure with cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and 1.5T CMR were performed in 99 tertiary hypertension clinic patients. Subgroup analysis by extreme dipper (n = 9), dipper (n = 39), non-dipper (n = 35) and reverse dipper (n = 16) status was performed, matched in age, gender and BMI. Left ventricular (LV) mass was significantly higher for extreme dippers than dippers after correction for covariates (100 ± 6 g/m2 vs 79 ± 3 g/m2 , P = ...

The noctural desert elapid Walterinnesia aegyptia Lataste was observed in the habitat and in captivity. This species is of extremely poor sight and finds its prey mainly by its olfactory sense. It is active around midnight at temperatures down to 10°C and collects various kinds of diurnal and crepuscular reptiles, which are pulled out of their hidingplaces. Its extremely semantic coloration serves as a defense device and does not come in to conflict with its specialized way of foraging.

Data in the literature that in the Netherlands Carabus problematicus is an autumn breeder with overwintering larvae and adults have been confirmed. Pitfall catches show two peaks of adult beetles. The first small peak of activity is realized in May, the significance of which is not yet understood. The second higher peak occurs from the end of August till the beginning of October: the reproduction period. In this period at least three age classes are present. Some females were shown to take part in reproduction for at least two seasons...

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Nocturia, voids which disturb sleep, is the most common cause of awakenings and is associated with daytime sleepiness. Because the standard treatments for the most common causes of nocturia are relatively ineffective, many treated patients with nocturia are left with residual sleepiness. We carried out this pilot study to evaluate the potential of Armodafinil to be an effective means of addressing the sleepiness that persists in many nocturia patients despite their receiving standard therapy...

OBJECTIVES: To examine the influence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) on nocturia, controlling for their shared co-morbidities, in a population of community-based middle aged to elderly men. METHODS: Participants were drawn from a randomly selected, community-dwelling cohort of men in Adelaide, Australia. Seven hundred and eight men (mean: 60.7 [41.6-88.2] years) who had polysomnography recordings, complete lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) measures (International Prostate Symptom Score), without prostate or bladder cancer and/or surgery, and no prior OSA diagnosis were selected...

OBJECTIVES: Describe current shortcomings in clinical research on the treatment of nocturia in adults, and suggest new directions for future studies in this field. METHODS: A literature search was conducted using the keywords 'nocturia,' 'nocturnal polyuria,' 'sleep,' and 'hypertension.' RESULTS: Nocturia, or waking up at night to void, is a highly prevalent and bothersome lower urinary tract symptom (LUTS) affecting up to 40% of adults. Since the majority of patients are diagnosed with nocturnal polyuria (NP) as one of the underlying causes, it is not surprising that the effect of treatments for overactive bladder (OAB) and bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) are disappointing with regard to nocturia...

The complement pathway is a cascade of proteases that is involved in immune surveillance and innate immunity, as well as adaptive immunity. Dysfunction of the complement cascade may be mediated by aberrations in the pathways of activation, complement regulatory proteins, or complement deficiencies, and has been linked to a number of hematologic disorders, including paroxysmal noctural hemoglobinuria (PNH), hereditary angioedema (HAE), and atypical hemolytic-uremic syndrome (aHUS). Here, current laboratory tests for disorders of the complement pathway are reviewed, and their utility and limitations in hematologic disorders and systemic diseases are discussed...

BACKGROUND: Although nocturia has been reported to increase mortality in elderly individuals, the particular risk factors that are associated with this event are unclear. Therefore, we evaluated risk factors for death in outpatients with nocturia. METHODS: Between October 2002 and December 2009, 250 consecutive patients with nocturia were enrolled in two general hospitals in Japan. Among them, 193 patients were able to be followed for at least 1 year and up to 9 years (median 4...

In neuromuscular diseases, respiratory disorder is related to sleep disorder. In Duchenne muscular dystrophy, respiratory muscle disorder progresses and induces alveolar hypoventilation. Hypoxemia and hypercapnia develop, requiring appropriate management. Hypoxemia first appears during sleep, initially occurring during the REM period, and it progresses and becomes persistent. Not only a decrease in the respiratory muscle strength but also upper respiratory tract obstruction due to soft palatal hypertrophy or a decrease in the muscle tension during sleep causes noctural ventilatory impairment...

The responses of CO2 exchange and overnight malate accumulation of leaf and stem succulent CAM-plants to water stress and the particular climatic conditiens of fog and föhn in the southern Namib desert have been investigated. In most of the investigated CAM plants a long term water stress gradually attenuated any uptake of external CO2 and led to CO2 release throughout day and night. No CAM-idling was observed. Rainfall or irrigation immediately restored daytime CO2 uptake while the recovery of the noctural CO2 uptake was delayed...

Adult neurogenesis in mammals is predominantly restricted to two brain regions, the dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus and the olfactory bulb (OB), suggesting that these two brain regions uniquely share functions that mediate its adaptive significance. Benefits of adult neurogenesis across these two regions appear to converge on increased neuronal and structural plasticity that subserves coding of novel, complex, and fine-grained information, usually with contextual components that include spatial positioning...

Nocturia is a prevalent highly bothersome urinary symptom that may significantly detriment the health and well-being of sufferers. It is characterized by waking at night to void, each void preceded and followed by sleep, hence leading to fragmentation of sleep and day-time tiredness. This may result in reduced productivity in the workplace, which contributes to the significant burden to the wider society that nocturia incurs. Nocturia was traditionally viewed as one of the many urinary tract symptoms that occur due to lower urinary tract dysfunction...
