Background: CircRNAs, a type of non-coding RNAs with special loop structure, of which the aberrant expression is closely related to tumor growth, proliferation, metastasis and recurrence. It remains unclear whether they have the potential to be biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis of cancers. The study aims to clarify the relationship of circRNAs expression with cancers diagnosis and prognosis. Materials and Methods: Sensitivity, specificity, area under curve (AUC) and receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) were calculated to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy; Hazard ratio (HR) of overall survival (OS), disease free survival (DFS) and recurrence free survival (RFS) were calculated to evaluate the association between circRNAs expression and survival of cancer patients...

Fibulin-3 has emerged as a promising novel biomarker in conforming or monitoring malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). This study sought to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic efficacies of humoral fibulin-3 for MPM. Seven eligible publications comprising 468 MPM cases for diagnosis, and 138 for prognosis were identified. Results manifested that humoral fibulin-3 sustained a pooled sensitivity of 0.62 (95% CI: 0.45-0.77) and specificity of 0.82 (95% CI: 0.73-0.89) in discriminating MPM patients from cancer-free individuals, corresponding to an AUC (area under the curve) of 0...

Palbociclib is a CDK4/6 inhibitor that received FDA approval for treatment of hormone receptor positive (HR+) HER2 negative (HER2neg) advanced breast cancer. To better personalize patients treatment it is critical to identify subgroups that would mostly benefit from it. We hypothesize that complex alterations of the Retinoblastoma (Rb) pathway might be implicated in resistance to CDK4/6 inhibitors and aim to investigate whether signatures of Rb loss-of-function would identify breast cancer cell lines resistant to palbociclib...

The abnormality of DNA methylation is one of the major epigenetic alterations in the human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We have assessed the global genomic DNA methylation profiles in human HCC patients by using the Infinium Human Methylation27 BeadChip. A CpG loci of S100A8 was found to be significantly hypomethylated in HCC.Pooled meta-analysis of five validation public datasets demonstrated its methylation level was significantly lower for HCC compared to paired adjacent normal tissues. Quantitative pyrosequencing analysis also showed that the S100A8 methylation level was decreased in cancer tissues (31...

Although various studies have demonstrated that growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) might be a potential diagnostic and prognostic marker in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients, the results are inconsistent and the statistical power of individual studies is also insufficient. An original study was conducted to explore the diagnostic and prognostic value of serum GDF15 in CRC patients. We also conducted a meta-analysis study which aimed to summarize the diagnostic and prognostic performance of serum GDF15 in CRC...

The application of serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the diagnosis and prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) has been evaluated in many studies, whereas the results were contradictive. The aim of this study was to systematically evaluate this issue. An original study was conducted to explore the diagnostic value of serum IL-6 in CRC. Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane library databases were searched for eligible studies. For diagnostic meta-analysis, aggregate data (AD) and individual participant data (IPD) meta-analyses were both adopted...

Recent evidences indicate that circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) exhibit aberrant expression in the plasma of patients suffering from cancer compared to normal individuals, suggesting that it may be a useful noninvasion diagnostic method. MiR-21 plays crucial roles in carcinogenesis and can be served as a biomarker for the detection of various cancers. Therefore, the aim of this meta-analysis is to assess the potential role of miR-21 for digestive system cancer. By searching the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science for publications concerning the diagnostic value of miR-21 for digestive system cancer, total of 23 publications were included in this meta-analysis...

Ovarian cancer is one of the most threatening diseases among women in the world. Current detection methods are expensive and lack accuracy. Thus, a fast, non-invasive biomarker for detecting ovarian cancer is urgently needed. Compelling evidences have been demonstrated that microRNAs, a large family of single-stranded and non-protein-coding RNA molecules, can serve as useful biomarkers in cancer detection. In this study, the relative expressions of microRNA-145 (miR-145) in the serum of patients with ovarian cancer and healthy controls were investigated in an independent study...

Glioma, the most common type of primary central nervous system cancers, was progressive with poor survival. MicroRNA, as a novel biomarker, was suspected to be novel biomarkers for glioma diagnosis and prognosis. The study aimed at investigating the diagnostic and predictive value of miR-221/222 family for glioma. In the first phase, we compared plasma miR-221/222 family levels between 50 glioma patients and 51 healthy controls by real-time qRT-PCR amplification. Meanwhile, a meta-analysis based on published studies and presents study was performed to explore the diagnostic performance of miR-221/222 family in human cancers...

BACKGROUND: We aimed to systematically summarize the diagnostic and prognostic value of circulating/tissue miR21 in patients with colorectal cancer. METHODS: An original study was conducted to explore the potential value of circulating miR21 in colorectal cancer diagnosis and tissue miR21 in colorectal cancer prognosis. PUBMED and EMBASE were searched (to August, 2013) to identify eligible studies. To explore the diagnostic performance of circulating miR21, meta-analysis methods were used to pool sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative likelihood ratio, diagnostic OR and to construct a summary ROC curve...

BACKGROUND: Mammographic breast density is a strong breast cancer risk factor but is not used in the clinical setting, partly because of a lack of standardization and automation. We developed an automated and objective measurement of the grayscale value variation within a mammogram, evaluated its association with breast cancer, and compared its performance with that of percent density (PD). METHODS: Three clinic-based studies were included: a case-cohort study of 217 breast cancer case subjects and 2094 non-case subjects and two case-control studies comprising 928 case subjects and 1039 control subjects and 246 case subjects and 516 control subjects, respectively...

The objective of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the first generation dual-source computed tomography (DSCT) in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD). We selected articles from four databases (Pubmed, Embase, the Cochrane central register of controlled trials (CENTRAL) and Chinese biomedical literature database. The strict study selection was made, and two reviewers independently extracted data back-to-back from included studies. Meta-Disc version 1.4 was used to obtain the pooled results...
