BACKGROUND: The organic food market has grown rapidly worldwide in the past 15 years. However, evidence concerning the health effects of organic foods is scarce. We evaluated the cross-sectional association of organic food purchase, as a proxy of organic food consumption, with diabetes in a nationally representative population. METHODS: We included 8199 participants aged ≥20 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007⁻2008 and 2009⁻2010...

For highly sensitive and accurate acetylene (C2 H2 ) detection, a near-infrared (NIR) off-axis integrated-cavity output spectroscopy (OA-ICOS) sensor system based on an ultra-compact cage-based absorption cell was proposed. The absorption cell with dimensions of 10 cm × 8 cm × 6 cm realized a dense-pattern and an easily-aligned stable optical system. The OA-ICOS sensor system employed a 6cm-long optical cavity that was formed by two mirrors with a reflectivity of 99.35% and provided an effective absorption path length of ∼9...

OBJECTIVE: To study the extent to which BMI after pregnancy adds to the elevated risk of postpregnancy type 2 diabetes in women with a history of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) (preeclampsia or gestational hypertension). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We used data from the Nurses' Health Study II, a prospective cohort study. In women aged 45-54 years without prior gestational diabetes mellitus, we investigated the interaction between BMI and HDP history on the risk of type 2 diabetes...

αA66-80 peptide forms with age in the lens nucleus of humans and guinea pigs, and binds to αA-crystallin by hydrophobic bonds to produce protein aggregates. The purpose of the present study was to use negative-stain transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to investigate peptide/crystallin structures that form when αA66-80 peptide is incubated with recombinant human (HU) and guinea pig (GP) αA-crystallin, and GP αAins -crystallin, under physiological conditions of temperature and pH. HU and GP αA-crystallin each consists of 173 amino acid residues with only eight differences...

Background: Perturbed lipid metabolic pathways may play important roles in the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, existing epidemiological studies have focused more on discovering individual lipid metabolites for CVD risk prediction rather than assessing metabolic pathways. Methods: This study included a subcohort of 787 participants and all 230 incident CVD cases from the PREDIMED trial. Applying a network-based analytical method, we identified lipid subnetworks and clusters from a global network of 200 lipid metabolites and linked these subnetworks/clusters to CVD risk...

Context: The potential associations between acylcarnitine profiles and incidence of T2D, and whether acylcarnitines can be used to improve diabetes prediction remains unclear. Objective: To evaluate the associations between baseline and 1-year changes in acylcarnitines, and their diabetes predictive ability beyond traditional risk factors. Design, setting and participants: We designed a case-cohort study within the PREDIMED Study including all incident cases of T2D(n=251) and 694 randomly selected participants at baseline(follow-up:3...

Numerous studies have investigated individual biomarkers in relation to risk of type 2 diabetes. However, few have considered the interconnectivity of these biomarkers in the etiology of diabetes as well as the potential changes in the biomarker correlation network during diabetes development. We conducted a secondary analysis of 27 plasma biomarkers representing glucose metabolism, inflammation, adipokines, endothelial dysfunction, insulin-like growth factor axis and iron store plus age and BMI at blood collection from an existing case-control study nested in the Nurses' Health Study, including 1,303 incident diabetes cases and 1,627 healthy women...

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown a positive association between type 2 diabetes (T2D) and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. However, it is uncertain whether this association differs by duration of T2D or sex. We thus investigated the associations of T2D and its duration with the risk of incident CRC. METHODS: We followed 87,523 women from the Nurses' Health Study (1980-2012) and 47,240 men from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (1986-2012). Data on physician-diagnosed T2D was collected at baseline with a questionnaire and updated biennially...

Recently three different cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 (CDK4/6) dual inhibitors were approved for the treatment of breast cancer (palbociclib, ribociclib and abemaciclib), all of which offer comparable therapeutic benefits. Their safety profiles however are different. For example, neutropenia is observed at varying incidences in patients treated with these drugs; however it is the most common adverse event for palbociclib and ribociclib, whereas diarrhea is the most common adverse event observed in patients treated with abemaciclib...

The pathophysiological mechanisms of epileptogenesis following ischemic stroke in the aged brain are not well understood, largely due to limited developments in animal modeling of poststroke epilepsy (PSE). A recent study in our laboratory (Kelly et al., 2018) using transient (3 h) unilateral middle cerebral artery (MCA) and common carotid artery (CCA) occlusion (MCA/CCAo) in 4- and 20-month-old Fischer (F344) rats resulted in epileptic seizures in both age groups; age and infarction factors independently had effects on seizure frequency...

The doubly charmed baryon decay Ξ_{cc}^{++}→Ξ_{c}^{+}π^{+} is observed for the first time, with a statistical significance of 5.9σ, confirming a recent observation of the baryon in the Λ_{c}^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{+} final state. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.7  fb^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The Ξ_{cc}^{++} mass is measured to be 3620.6±1.5(stat)±0.4(syst)±0.3(Ξ_{c}^{+})  MeV/c^{2} and is consistent with the previous result...

Background The previously validated Healthy Heart Score effectively predicted the 20-year risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). We examine whether the Healthy Heart Score may extend to an association with total and cause-specific mortality. Methods and results The prospective cohort study investigated 58 319 women (mean age 50.2 years) in the Nurses' Health Study (1984-2010) and 29 854 in men (mean age 52.7 years) in the Health Professionals' Follow-up Study (1986-2010) free of cancer and CVD at baseline...

Background: Epidemiologic studies suggest a strong link between poor habitual sleep quality and increased cardiovascular disease risk. However, the underlying mechanisms are not entirely clear. Metabolomic profiling may elucidate systemic differences associated with sleep quality that influence cardiometabolic health. Methods: We explored cross-sectional associations between sleep quality and plasma metabolites in a nested case-control study of coronary heart disease (CHD) in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI; n = 1956) and attempted to replicate the results in an independent sample from the Nurses' Health Study II (NHSII; n = 209)...

Background Long-term data on evolution and clinical impact of myocardial fibrosis in valvular heart disease are scarce. Methods and Results In this 10 years' extension of a prospective study in patients undergoing conventional aortic valve replacement because of symptomatic severe aortic valve stenosis, the impact of myocardial replacement fibrosis (MRF) on long-term outcome was assessed. Endomyocardial biopsies were acquired during aortic valve replacement in 58 consecutive patients. MRF was graded using the calculated percentage area of fibrosis and patients categorized as severe (n=21), mild (n=15), and no fibrosis (n=22)...

In the United States, 32% of beverages consumed by adults and 19% of beverages consumed by children in 2007 to 2010 contained low-calorie sweeteners (LCSs). Among all foods and beverages containing LCSs, beverages represent the largest proportion of LCS consumption worldwide. The term LCS includes the 6 high-intensity sweeteners currently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and 2 additional high-intensity sweeteners for which the US Food and Drug Administration has issued no objection letters. Because of a lack of data on specific LCSs, this advisory does not distinguish among these LCSs...

Background: It is unknown whether dietary quality modifies genetic association with body mass index (BMI). Objective: This study examined whether dietary quality modifies genetic association with BMI. Design: We calculated 3 diet quality scores including the Alternative Healthy Eating Index 2010 (AHEI-2010), the Alternative Mediterranean Diet score (AMED), and the Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet score. We examined the interactions of a genetic risk score (GRS) based on 97 BMI-associated variants with the 3 diet quality scores on BMI in 30,904 participants from 3 large cohorts...
