OBJECTIVE: To present an alternative technique called pseudo-flap for reconstructing long ureteral defects as an alternative to Boari flap. Despite being used for more than 70 years by urologists for tension-free reconstruction of distal and mid-ureteral defects, the Boari flap exhibits high complication rates, with an average of 27% (range 5.5%-30.4%). These complications arise from compromised blood supply, attributed to incisions made on all three sides of the flap and dependence on the flap base as the sole source of blood supply...

OBJECTIVES: To describe our institution's experience with Boari flap ureteral reconstruction, specifically focusing on the development of postoperative lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). METHODS: A retrospective review of all Boari flaps performed at our institution between 2013 and 2023 was performed, excluding patients with urothelial carcinoma and males, given the frequency of LUTS from benign prostatic hyperplasia. Primary outcome was the development of new onset LUTS and subsequent treatment...

To present our experience with laparoscopic ureteroneocystostomy with bladder flap (LUCBF) for treating benign ureteral stenosis and evaluate its feasibility and efficacy. The clinical data of 27 patients with benign ureteral stenosis who underwent LUCBF were retrospectively analyzed. After identification and excision of the ureteral stenosis segment, the healthy ureteral stump was dissected and incised longitudinally. A U-shaped or spiral bladder flap was harvested from the anterolateral bladder wall for ureteroplasty...

INTRODUCTION: The management of ureteral strictures longer than 1-2 cm must be treated by major surgery (1, 2). The strictures located at the distal part of the ureter can be managed by a ureteral reimplantation using a psoas hitch or a Boari flap depending on its proximity to the bladder (3). Those located at the proximal ureter can be treated by a pyeloplasty (4). The ureteric strictures in the mid-ureter are the ones that pose a greater challenge for the urologist because a ureteral substitution is needed, either using a segment of the intestine or a buccal mucosa graft (5, 6)...

A patient in her late 20s presented with a month-long history of continuous dribbling of urine associated with right flank following suction-evacuation for an incomplete abortion. Contrast-Enhanced Computed Tomography (CECT) abdomen and Computerised Tomography (CT) urogram demonstrated a 1cm focal defect in the right lateral wall of the uterus communicating with a collection in the right hemipelvis and right paracolic region. Fluid was demonstrated in the uterus and cervix. The right ureter narrowed abruptly at the level of the S1 vertebra, with prominence of the proximal ureter...

Nonetheless, SU has been performed infrequently in the real world, and there is no consensus on the preferred surgical technique in laparoscopic surgery. Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RF) commonly leads to renal impairment due to compression of ureters, and around 8% of patients eventually progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). We present a case of RF in a 61-year-old female patient with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) who developed ESRD. She presented with a postrenal acute kidney injury, being initially treated with an ureteral catheter. A magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen showed parietal thickening of the right ureter, and she underwent right ureter reimplantation through bladder flap and psoas hitch...

BACKGROUND: Ureteroscopy is well-established as a primary treatment modality for urolithiasis. Ureteral avulsion, particularly complete or full-length avulsion with a resultant long segment of the ureter left attached to the ureteroscope, is a rare but devastating complication of the procedure. Management of this complication is challenging. Moreover, general consensus regarding the optimal management is undetermined. We report our experience of managing a complete ureteral avulsion case via an extended Boari flap technique with long-term results...

Introduction: Radical nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff excision (BCE) is the standard of care all high-risk upper tract urothelial carcinomas. With continued advancements, robot-assisted segmental ureteral resection can be employed for ureteral tumors for ipsilateral renal preservation. Herein, we are presenting our experience of different techniques classified by the affected ureteral segment, along with perioperative and intermediate to long-term functional and oncologic outcomes. Methods: From January 2008 to June 2021, a total of 17 patients underwent robot-assisted renal preserving excisional procedures for ureteral tumors...

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to evaluate the feasibility of laparoscopic ureteral reimplantation with a Boari flap for long-segment ureteric avulsion or ureteric strictures of the middle and lower ureters. By observing its curative effect and prognosis, we can provide a safer and reliable treatment option for patients with middle and lower ureteral injury. METHODS: In this study, of the eight cases under study, five were diagnosed with long-segment ureteric strictures, one had long-segment ureteric avulsion, one was diagnosed with ureteral rupture caused by surgical injury of appendicitis, and the remaining one underwent ureterostomy after ureteral injury...

Uretero-enteric anastomotic strictures (UES) after robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) represent the main cause of post-operative renal dysfunction. The gold standard for treatment of UES is open uretero-ileal reimplantation (UIR), which is often a challenging and complex procedure associated with significant morbidity. We report a challenging case of long severe bilateral UES (5 cm on the left side, 3 cm on the right side) after RARC in a 55 years old male patient who was previously treated in another institution and who came to our attention with kidney dysfunction and bilateral ureteral stents from the previous two years...

Inverted urothelial papilloma (IUP) is an unusual tumor that typically presents as a non-invasive, endophytic urothelial neoplasm. Though fairly well described in the bladder, IUP of the upper urinary tract is fairly rare, with only 68 cases documented in English language literature. Our patient presented with an IUP of the distal left ureter and was treated with a distal ureterectomy and reimplant of the ureter with a psoas hitch.

Genitourinary tract arteriovenous malformations are extremely rare. Most of the lesions are found either in the kidney or urinary bladder. So far, to the best of our knowledge, only five cases of arteriovenous malformation of the ureter have been reported in the literature. Here, we present, a young male, clinically presented with pain in the left flank with no other significant history.
