The impact of ionic liquids (ILs) on polar reactions is well recognised, however the impact of ILs on non-polar reactions is less well understood or explored. Pericyclic Cope rearrangements are highly concerted, exhibit minimal charge localisation and pass through an uncharged but well-defined transition state, and thus provide a good mechanism for exploring the impact of IL polarizability on chemical reactivity. Recently, a 10× rate enhancement has been observed for the Cope rearrangement of 3-phenyl-1,5-hexadiene in the IL 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide [C4 C1 im][NTf2 ] compared to benzene...

The purpose of this project was to investigate potential correlates of family life impairment in families of young autistic children. This project incorporated measures of specific child and parent challenges in addition to a commonly used unidimensional measure of autism characteristics. In this way, we could assess whether such challenges explain variance in family life impairment, and whether their inclusion diminish associations between autism characteristics and family life impairment. Cross-sectional data were collected from 564 parents of autistic children aged 2 to 5 years who participated in a larger online study...

Chronic exposure to environmental hazards causes airway epithelial dysfunction, primarily impaired physical barriers, immune dysfunction, and repair or regeneration. Impairment of airway epithelial function subsequently leads to exaggerated airway inflammation and remodeling, the main features of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Mitochondrial damage has been identified as one of the mechanisms of airway abnormalities in COPD, which is closely related to airway inflammation and airflow limitation...

Rotary blood pumps (RBPs) operating at a constant speed generate non-physiologic blood pressure and flow rate, which can cause endothelial dysfunction, leading to adverse clinical events in peripheral blood vessels and other organs. Notably, pulsatile working modes of the RBP can increase vascular pulsatility to improve arterial endothelial function. However, the laws and related mechanisms of differentially regulating arterial endothelial function under different pulsatile working modes are still unclear. This knowledge gap hinders the optimal selection of the RBP working modes...

The reactivity of six MnIV -oxo complexes in C-H bond oxidation has been examined using a combination of kinetic experiments and computational methods. Variable-temperature studies of the oxidation of 9,10-dihydroanthracene (DHA) and ethylbenzene by these MnIV -oxo complexes yielded activation parameters suitable for evaluating electronic structure computations. Complementary kinetic experiments of the oxidation of deuterated DHA provided evidence for hydrogen-atom tunneling in C-H bond oxidation for all MnIV -oxo complexes...

The conceptual replacement of nitrogen with phosphorus in common organic functional groups unlocks new properties and reactivity. The phosphorus-containing analogues of triazenes are underexplored but offer great potential as flexible and small bite-angle ligands. This manuscript explores the synthesis and characterisation of a family of air-stable azophosphine-borane complexes, and their subsequent deprotection to the free azophosphines. These compounds are structurally characterised, both experimentally and computationally, and highlight the availability of the phosphorus lone pair for coordination...

The stability and reactivity of Pd4 Ni4 and Pd4 Cu4 clusters embedded on graphene modified by monovacancy and nitrogen doping were investigated using auxiliary density functional theory (ADFT) calculations. The most stable structure of the Pd4 Ni4 cluster is found in high spin multiplicity, whereas the lowest stable energy structure of the Pd4 Cu4 cluster is a close shell system. The interaction energies between the bimetallic clusters and the defective graphene systems are significantly higher than those reported in the literature for the Pd-based clusters deposited on pristine graphene...

In this study, we present a comprehensive overview of this newly evolving research domain, focusing on the synthetic aspects. We delve into various factors influencing the synthesis of Cu NCs, with specific emphasis on the role of reducing agents...

In the case of suspicion of nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE), reactivity on electroencephalograms (EEGs) can provide valuable diagnostic information. Reactivity refers to responses to auditory or somatosensory stimulation, with changes in amplitude and frequency of background activity. Because of self-perpetuating processes and the failure of self-terminating mechanisms, status epilepticus is unlikely to cease when patients spontaneously move, and it cannot typically be stopped by external stimulation (i...

Chemical tools and principles have become central to biological and medical research/applications by leveraging a range of classical organic chemistry reactions. Friedel-Crafts alkylation and acylation are arguably some of the most well-known and used synthetic methods for the preparation of small molecules but their use in biological and medical fields is relatively less frequent than the other reactions, possibly owing to the notion of their plausible incompatibility with biological systems. This review demonstrates advances in Friedel-Crafts alkylation and acylation reactions in a variety of biomolecular chemistry fields...

Lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs) with nickel (Ni)-rich layered oxide cathodes exhibit twice the energy density of conventional Li-ion batteries. However, their lifespan is limited by severe side reactions caused by high electrode reactivity. Fluorinated solvent-based electrolytes can address this challenge, but they pose environmental and biological hazards. This work reports on the molecular engineering of fluorine (F)-free ethers to mitigate electrode surface reactivity in high-voltage Ni-rich LMBs. By merely extending the alkyl chains of traditional ethers, we effectively reduce the catalytic reactivity of the cathode towards the electrolyte at high voltages, which suppresses the oxidation decomposition of the electrolyte, microstructural defects and rock-salt phase formation in the cathode, and gas release issues...

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) causes great health hazards to society because most antibiotics are ineffective. Photodynamic treatment (PDT) has been proposed to combat MRSA due to the advantage of imaging-guided no-drug resistance therapy. However, the traditional photosensitizers for PDT are limited by aggregation-caused quenching for imaging and low photodynamic antibacterial efficiency.
