BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the modulatory effect of S-allyl cysteine against cyclophosphamide-induced changes in uroplakin IIIa, CCL11 and TNF-α. METHODS: Mice were treated with cyclophosphamide (200mg/kg×7 d, ip). S-allyl cysteine (150mg/kg×7d, ip), and comparator compound mesna (40mg/kg×7d, ip) were administered 1h before and 4h after each cyclophosphamide dose. The urinary bladder was analysed for mRNA and protein changes in uroplakin IIIa (UPIIIa), CCL11 and TNF-α and histopathological findings...

BACKGROUND: Objective, treatment-independent markers of cancer-related fatigue are needed to advance clinical trials. In the current study, the authors evaluated physical, neurocognitive, and serologic markers for correlation with self-reported fatigue before and after (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy for patients with early-stage breast cancer. METHODS: Women with AJCC TNM Stage I-III breast cancer consented to assessment before and after the completion of 4 cycles of dose-dense doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide...

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D (VD) deficiency results in a worse prognosis in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and may affect the production of cytokines. Nonetheless, there is the lack of studies dealing with VD supplementation and its impact on chemokines in CLL patients. AIM: The primary endpoint of our interventional study was to evaluate the effect of cholecalciferol supplementation on serum chemokines levels in CLL patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen subjects with CLL were enrolled for the study...

Tumor-targeted antibody therapy has had a major impact on reducing morbidity and mortality in a wide range of cancers. Antibodies mediate their antitumor activity in part by activating immune effector cells; however, the tumor microenvironment (TME) is enriched with cellular and soluble mediators that actively suppress generation of antitumor immunity. Here, we investigate the potential of prospectively identifying and neutralizing an immunomodulatory soluble mediator within the TME to enhance therapeutic efficacy of the HER2-directed antibody trastuzumab...

OBJECTIVES: To investigate association of host genomic variation and risk of infections during treatment for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). METHODS: We explored association of 34,000 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) related primarily to pharmacogenomics and immune function to risk of infections among 69 ALL patients on induction therapy. RESULTS: Forty-eight (70%) patients experienced infectious events including 23 with positive blood cultures...

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate systemic serum cytokine and chemokine markers for inflammation and Th1/Th2 responses in relation to multiple helminth infections, parasite burden and/or nutritional status of individuals. METHODS: In a longitudinal study, stool samples from 210 individuals from an area highly endemic for Ascaris lumbricoides, Necator americanus and Schistosoma mansoni were examined before and 12 months after clearance of parasites by chemotherapy. On both occasions, the presence of mono- or multiple infections and intensities of infection were compared with nutritional parameters and with serum cytokines or chemokines as markers for inflammatory, regulatory or Th1- or Th2-type immune responses...

BACKGROUND: Chemokines are a class of cytokines with chemotactic properties shown to be induced by M. tuberculosis or its antigens in vitro and in experimental infection in vivo. A few studies have also demonstrated the expression of chemokines in clinical samples of patients with active tuberculosis (TB). In the present work, we measured the concentration of chemokines in plasma samples of HIV-negative patients with pulmonary tuberculosis at different stages of chemotherapy. For comparison, we also evaluated the levels of sTNFR1 and TNF-alpha...
