Several studies based on 16SrDNA analysis have revealed certain unique characteristics of gut microbiome in centenarians. We established a prospective cohort of fecal microbiota and conducted the first metagenomics-based study among centenarians. The objective was to explore the dynamic changes of gut microbiota in healthy centenarians and centenarians approaching end of life and to unravel the characteristics of aging-associated microbiome. Seventy-five healthy centenarians residing in three regions of Hainan participated in follow-up surveys and collection of fecal samples at intervals of 3 months...

This study aims to describe the clinical course, drug use, and health services use characteristics during the last year of life of elders who die being centenarians and to identify key aspects differentiating them from elders who die at an earlier age, with a particular focus on sex differences. We conducted an observational, population-based study in the EpiChron Cohort (Aragón, Spain). The population was stratified by sex and into three age sub-populations (80-89, 90-99, and ≥100 years), and their characteristics were described and compared...

BACKGROUND: Previous studies reported that low level of oestradiol (E2) was associated with higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, little study examined the relationship between E2 and CVD in longevous women, which were deficient in serum E2 for the post-menopausal status. Therefore, this study aims to explore the association between E2 and CVD risk factors in a group of female centenarians of Hainan, China. METHODS: A total of 413 female centenarians (aged from 100 to 115) from China Hainan Centenarian Cohort Study (CHCCS) were enrolled in this study...

Exceptional longevity represents an extreme phenotype. Current centenarians are survivors of a cohort who display delayed onset of age-related diseases and/or resistance to otherwise lethal illnesses occurring earlier in life. Characteristics of aging are heterogeneous, even among long-lived individuals. Associations between specific clinical or genetic biomarkers exist, but there is unlikely to be a single biomarker predictive of long life. Careful observations in the oldest old offer some empirical strategies that favor increased health span and life span, with implications for compression of disability, identification and implementation of lifestyle behaviors that promote independence, identification and measurement of more reliable markers associated with longevity, better guidance for appropriate health screenings, and promotion of anticipatory health discussions in the setting of more accurate prognostication...

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the hospice experience of centenarians. As the population of centenarians is projected to increase, understanding their unique end-of-life needs will be important to inform delivery of quality end-of-life care. Our objective was to characterize the hospice experience of centenarians. METHODS: A retrospective single-institution cohort study of centenarians enrolled in hospice from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2017, was conducted to collect demographic and clinical information...

BACKGROUND: Echocardiography has been shown to be a valuable resource in the diagnosis of many cardiac conditions, and can be used in all age groups, from the fetus to the oldest old. In the context of an increasingly aging population, the impact and utility of echocardiography in centenarians is largely unknown. This study is to determine whether echocardiography in centenarians aids in making clinical patient management decisions. METHODS: A retrospective review of echocardiograms from 1986 to 2014, at two affiliated tertiary centers, in individuals who were 100 years or older at the time of the examination...

A 101 years-old woman was admitted to our Emergency Department (ED) for acute dyspnea which onset nearly two hours before presentation. She had been on hydrochlorothyazyde-amiloride therapy due to mild hypertension. No other relevant features were present in the clinical history. The old lady had never been admitted to the hospital, and she was still living alone. A few days before hospital admission, one of the daughters became ill, so that a caregiver was paid for assisting her 12/24. This new circumstance was reluctantly accepted by the old lady...

Centenarians (persons aged 100years and older) are one of the fastest growing cohorts in countries across the world. With the increasing prevalence of centenarians and growing amount of clinical information in large administrative health databases, it is now possible to more fully characterize the health of this unique and heterogeneous population. This study described patterns of health deficits in the centenarian population receiving care from community-based home care services and long-term care facilities (LTCFs) in Ontario, Canada...

BACKGROUND: Physical frailty and depression are common comorbid conditions that have important impact on older adults. Few studies however have examined their co-occurrence in centenarians. This paper explores the relationship between the two conditions and the most characteristic depressive symptoms associated with the frailty syndrome. METHODS: Data come from two Portuguese Centenarian Studies. Frailty was measured using Fried's phenotype, which includes at least three clinical signs: exhaustion, weight loss, weakness, slowness, and low physical activity level; the Geriatric Depression Scale was used to assess depression...

Although the number of centenarians has been rapidly increasing in industrialized countries, no clinical studies evaluated their characteristics and outcomes from out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs). This nationwide, population-based, observation of the whole population of Japan enrolled consecutive OHCA centenarians with resuscitation attempts before emergency medical service arrival from 2005 to 2013. The primary outcome measure was 1-month survival from OHCAs. The multivariate logistic regression model was used to assess factors associated with 1-month survival in this population...

The discovery that somatic cells can be induced into a pluripotent state by the expression of reprogramming factors has enormous potential for therapeutics and human disease modeling. With regard to aging and rejuvenation, the reprogramming process resets an aged, somatic cell to a more youthful state, elongating telomeres, rearranging the mitochondrial network, reducing oxidative stress, restoring pluripotency, and making numerous other alterations. The extent to which induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)s mime embryonic stem cells is controversial, however, as iPSCs have been shown to harbor an epigenetic memory characteristic of their tissue of origin which may impact their differentiation potential...

The very old people is a growing population group in Russia and in Moscow in particular that requires more close attention as it demands special medical and social approaches. The investigation was based on data obtained from Moscow district clinics concerning the gender and pathologies structure of people aged 90 yrs and older. In this group women prevailed in total amount and among those older 100 yrs. Striking gender difference was revealed in disturbances of the carbohydrate metabolism. The most frequent pathologies in this population are cardiovascular, nerve and gastrointestine duct systems diseases that have equal prevalence among men and women...

A review of literature indicates that people who experience longevity have certain characteristics and personality traits in common. While family history and health habits play an important role, centenarian research reveals that family support, an optimistic attitude, a sense of purpose, and an ability to manage stress, all can contribute to longevity. Social workers conducted intensive life review interviews with 17 octogenarians receiving dialysis at a clinic in the Detroit suburb Eastpointe, Mich. to learn more about their backgrounds, health habits, and coping styles in order to determine if they shared tendencies found in centenarians, and the implications it had for younger dialysis patients...
