PURPOSE: Cancer care is becoming increasingly complicated, in particular with the integration of radiation and surgery. Institutions may need to increase coordination between multidisciplinary clinical teams to optimize patient care. This study examines historical trends in adjuvant and neoadjuvant radiation therapy (ANRT) before or after cancer-directed surgery to identify disease sites that may benefit from coordinated care. METHODS: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database was queried to identify patients with bladder cancer; breast cancer; cervical cancer; colorectal cancer; kidney cancer; cancer of the lung, bronchus, and pleura; lymphoma; melanoma; cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx; ovarian cancer; pancreatic cancer; prostate cancer; thyroid cancer; and uterine cancer from 1973 to 2011...

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator (ARNT) is broadly involved in regulating tumorigenesis by inducing genes that are involved in tumor growth and angiogenesis. Tumorigenesis usually involves normoxic conditions. However, the role of ARNT in tumor metastasis during normoxia remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that ARNT protein levels were decreased in late-stage human colorectal cancer using immunohistochemical analysis. Down-regulation of ARNT protein promoted cancer cell migration and invasion, which was mediated by activation of the fibronectin/integrin β1/FAK signaling axis...

Removal of nitrogen and phosphorus (P) from wastewater is successfully and widely practiced in systems employing both granular sludge technology and enhanced biological P removal (EBPR) processes; however, the key parameter, anaerobic reaction time (AnRT), has not been thoroughly investigated. Successful EBPR is highly dependent on an appropriate AnRT, which induces carbon and polyphosphate metabolism by phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs). Therefore, the long-term impact of AnRT on denitrifying P removal performance and granular characteristics was investigated in three identical granular sludge sequencing batch reactors with AnRTs of 90 (R1), 120 (R2) and 150 min (R3)...

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy disease affecting 5 to 8% of pregnant women and a leading cause of both maternal and fetal mortality and morbidity. Because of a default in the process of implantation, the placenta of preeclamptic women undergoes insufficient vascularization. This results in placental ischemia, inflammation and subsequent release of placental debris and vasoactive factors in the maternal circulation causing a systemic endothelial activation. Several microarray studies have analyzed the transcriptome of the preeclamptic placentas to identify genes which could be involved in placental dysfunction...

Identification of new therapeutic and prognostic biomarkers for clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is urgently required since most patients are in advanced stages of ccRCC at initial diagnosis and the recurrence rate is high. Differentially expressed proteins between the ccRCC cell line RLC-310 and the normal renal cell line HK-2 were identified by a comparative proteomic approach based on a protein fractionation two-dimensional (PF-2D) liquid-phase fractionation system and capillary liquid chromatography electrospray ionization mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS)...

BACKGROUND: The main objective of our study was to assess the impact of a board game on smoking status and smoking-related variables in current smokers. To accomplish this objective, we conducted a randomized controlled trial comparing the game group with a psychoeducation group and a waiting-list control group. METHODS: The following measures were performed at participant inclusion, as well as after a 2-week and a 3-month follow-up period: "Attitudes Towards Smoking Scale" (ATS-18), "Smoking Self-Efficacy Questionnaire" (SEQ-12), "Attitudes Towards Nicotine Replacement Therapy" scale (ANRT-12), number of cigarettes smoked per day, stages of change, quit attempts, and smoking status...

Vasohibin-1(VASH1) has recently been isolated as a novel negative feedback inhibitor of angiogenesis. Several studies have demonstrated that VASH1 plays important roles in tumor angiogenesis but the role of this angiogenic inhibitor in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has not been elucidated until now. In this study, we investigated the expression pattern of VASH1 and the association with clinicopathological features in RCC. Expression of VASH1, hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), and microvessel density (MVD, labeled by CD34) was assessed by immunohistochemistry in 46 RCC specimens and 20 adjacent nontumorous renal tissues (ANRTs)...

AIMS: Ischaemic post-conditioning (IPost-Co) exerts cardioprotection by diminishing ischaemia/reperfusion injury. Yet, the mechanisms involved in such protection remain largely unknown. We have investigated the effects of IPost-Co in cardiac cells and in heart performance using molecular, proteomic and functional approaches. METHODS AND RESULTS: Pigs underwent 1.5 h mid-left anterior descending balloon occlusion and then were sacrificed without reperfusion (ischaemia; n= 7), subjected to 2...

Nitrous oxide (N(2)O) is a highly potent greenhouse gas; however, the characteristics of N(2)O production during denitrification using poly-β-hydroxyalkanoates (PHA) as a carbon source are not well understood. In this study, effects of anaerobic reaction time (AnRT) on PHA formation, denitrifying phosphorus removal and N(2)O production were investigated using a laboratory-scale anaerobic/anoxic/oxic sequencing batch reactor (An/A/O SBR). The results showed that operation of the An/A/O SBR for 0.78 SRT (47 cycles) after the AnRT was shortened from 90 min to 60 min resulted in anaerobically synthesized PHA improving by 1...

A method based on hydride generation for the AAS determination of selenium at nanogram levels in geological materials is described. The sample is decomposed by aqua regia attack in a sealed Teflon bomb. After treatment with hydrochloric acid, selenium is converted into hydrogen selenide by reaction with sodium borohydride and determined by AAS. Matrix interference effects have been investigated, but though they are rarely significant, the standard-additions method is recommended. The absolute sensitivity of the method is about 2...

In order to evaluate the performance of denoising algorithms applied to Monte Carlo calculated dose distributions, conventional evaluation methods (rms difference, 1% and 2% difference) can be used. However, it is illustrated that these evaluation methods sometimes underestimate the introduction of bias, since possible bias effects are averaged out over the complete dose distribution. In the present work, a new evaluation method is introduced based on a sliding window superimposed on a difference dose distribution (reference dose-noisy/denoised dose)...

The European Union has set itself the daunting target of becoming the world's most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy by 2010. Any hope of success against the United States and the Asian tiger economies lies in the quality of scientific and technological research. In France, postgraduate training has long labored under a deep academia/industry divide. Although the universities have introduced supervised 3 year doctoral courses along the lines of the English-speaking countries, they still produce too many postdocs with little experience or understanding of, and little taste for, the private sector...

OBJECTIVE: Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) doubles the chances that a smoker will quit smoking, but most smokers who attempt to quit do not use it at all or only use it inconsistently. We aimed to identify attitudes of smokers and ex-smokers toward NRT and to develop and assess the validity of a brief scale used to measure these attitudes. METHODS: We conducted a first mail survey of 256 smokers and ex-smokers to collect qualitative data and to develop survey items and a second mail survey of 494 smokers and ex-smokers to finalize the scale and assess its validity...
