The miniaturization of biomedical microrobots is crucial for their in vivo applications. However, it is challenging to reduce their size while maintaining their biomedical functions. To resolve this contradiction, we propose a semiphysical design concept for developing miniaturized microrobots, in which invisible components such as light beams are utilized to replace most of the physical parts of a microrobot, thus minimizing its physical size without sacrificing its biomedical functions. According to this design, we have constructed a semiphysical microrobot (SPM) composed of main light beam, light-responsive microparticle, and auxiliary light beam, serving as the actuation system, recognition part, and surgical claws, respectively...

Photon upconverison has attracted a substantial amount of interest in diverse fields due to its characteristic anti-Stokes emissions. However, obtaining intense emission under low-power laser irradiation has remained a challenge. Here we report a mechanistic design of activator-sensitizer alloyed nanoparticles to achieve bright upconversion under weak infrared irradiation. This design allows a nearest sensitizer-activator separation to facilitate efficient energy transfer that results in remarkably enhanced upconversion (>2 orders of magnitude) under 0...

Chemical dyes used in the textile industries are one of the major pollutants in water. Methylene blue (MB) is a commonly seen dye that creates hazardous health problems. In this article the photocatalytic degradation of MB by the nanocatalyst MoS2 (Nano-MoS2 ) and carbon dot (C Dots) incorporated MoS2 (Nano-CD-MoS2 ) is reported. The photocatalytic degradation of MB is analyzed based on the electron-hole recombination rate of the catalyst. Photoluminescence emission exhibited by the catalyst is used as a key indicator to probe the electron-hole recombination rate...

Rare earth doped up-conversion luminescent nano-materials exhibit abundant emission colors under suitable excitation condition. In this work, NaYF4 :Er/Ho@NaYF4 and NaYbF4 :Tm@NaYF4 nanoparticles were synthesized by co-precipitation method. The pure red emission can be realized by the designed NaYF4 :Er/Ho@NaYF4 nanocrystals and the R/Gs reach 23.3 and 25 under excitations of 980 and 1550 nm lasers, respectively. The R/G declines as the power increasing with the emission color changing from red to yellow, which is due to the quick saturation of the energy levels, radiating red emissions...

Upconverting nanoparticles are essential in modern photonics due to their ability to convert infrared light to visible light. Despite their significance, they exhibit limited brightness, a key drawback that can be addressed by combining them with plasmonic nanoparticles. Plasmon-enhanced upconversion has been widely demonstrated in dry environments, where upconverting nanoparticles are immobilized, but constitutes a challenge in liquid media where Brownian motion competes against immobilization. This study employs optical tweezers for the three-dimensional manipulation of an individual upconverting nanoparticle, enabling the exploration of plasmon-enhanced upconversion luminescence in water...

Single-particle tracking (SPT) is a powerful technique to unveil molecular behaviors crucial to the understanding of many biological processes, but it is limited by factors such as probe photostability and spectral orthogonality. To overcome these limitations, we develop upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs), which are photostable over several hours at the single-particle level, enabling long-term multicolor SPT. We investigate the brightness of core-shell UCNPs as a function of inert shell thickness to minimize particle size while maintaining sufficient signal for SPT...

Functionalization of metallic surfaces by molecular monolayers is a key process in fields such as nanophotonics or biotechnology. To strongly enhance light-matter interaction in such monolayers, nanoparticle-on-a-mirror (NPoM) cavities can be formed by placing metal nanoparticles on such chemically functionalized metallic monolayers. In this work, we present a novel functionalization process of gold surfaces using 5-amino-2-mercaptobenzimidazole (5-A-2MBI) molecules, which can be used for upconversion from THz to visible frequencies...

However, forming high-resolution nano- and micropatterns of UCNPs with large packing fractions is still challenging. Here, we explore direct patterning chemistries for 6-18 nm Tm3+ -, Yb3+ /Tm3+ -, and Yb3+ /Er3+ -based UCNPs using ligands that form either new ionic linkages or covalent bonds between UCNPs under ultraviolet (UV), electron-beam (e-beam), and near-infrared (NIR) exposure...

Monitoring the temperature distribution within a local environment at the micro and nanoscale is vital as many processes are solely thermal. Various thermometric techniques have been explored in the community, and out of these, fluorescent nano/micro particle-based mechanisms are accepted widely (fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) techniques, where the ratio of populations in two consecutive energy levels is compared with Boltzmann distribution). We describe a new technique to account for the temperature rise near an illuminated upconverting particle (UCP) using wavefront imaging, which is more sensitive than the conventional thermometric techniques on the microscale...
