REVIEW
Jacob Steven Siracusa, Lei Yin, Emily Measel, Shenuxan Liang, Xiaozhong Yu
Known endocrine disruptor bisphenol A (BPA) has been shown to be a reproductive toxicant in animal models. Its structural analogs: bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol F (BPF), bisphenol AF (BPAF), and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) are increasingly being used in consumer products. However, these analogs may exert similar adverse effects on the reproductive system, and their toxicological data are still limited. This mini-review examined studies on both BPA and BPA analog exposure and reproductive toxicity. It outlines the current state of knowledge on human exposure, toxicokinetics, endocrine activities, and reproductive toxicities of BPA and its analogs...

A significant progress in the management of controllable infections achieved by the early XXI century made it possible eliminate poliomyelitis across the nation, and practically eliminate measeles by vaccinating 96-99% of the children without raising the complication rate. The list of counterindications was shortened significantly, the Calendar of immunoprophylaxis was supplemented by inoculations against hepatitis B, rubella, flu, and type b Haemophilis influenzae infections. Morbidity of controllable infections in Russia decreased substantially compared with that in the 1990s...

INTRODUCTION: Measels, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) are highly contagious infectious diseases which may lead to severe complications. These diseases are vaccine-preventable. The present Health Technology Assessment report (report on technological consequences, HTA report) was commissioned by the German Institute of Medical Documentation and Information (DIMDI) and addresses various aspects of the MMR vaccination, the key question being how the MMR immunisation coverage rate can be increased in Germany...

OBJECTIVE: To develop pathogenic surveillance on measles and to effectively isolate measles virus. To know the genetic characterizations and molecular epidemiology of wildtype measles viruses from 2005 to 2007 in Guangdong Province, and provide the scientific basis for measles control and eradication. METHODS: Vero/Slam cell line were used, measles viruses were isolated from throat swabs or urine specimens collected from uspected measles patients in outbreaks and sporadic patients...

The expression of surface antigen CD69 in immune response cells is typically associated with the early stage(s) of cell activation, with maximal expression levels within 4 h of appropriate antigenic or mitogenic stimulation, and maintenance of these high expression levels for 18-24 h. The expression profiles of CD69 in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) cultured with actinomycin D prior to mitogenic stimulation were evaluated by direct immunofluorescence using flow cytometry. Pretreatment of PBMC suspensions with low, non-toxic levels of actinomycin D stimulated CD3+ T-lymphocytes to express CD69 in a concentration-dependent manner...

Selectively-bred Sinclair miniature swine exhibit a high incidence of congenital malignant melanoma which either proves fatal (10-15% of tumor-bearing piglets) or spontaneously regresses with a biphasic immunological phenomenon (85-90%) and no recurrence of malignancy. Mononuclear leukocytes were isolated from cutaneous melanomas and peripheral blood specimens collected from melanomatous (tumor-bearing) Sinclair swine during second-phase regression, and from peripheral blood specimens collected from non-melanomatous (tumor-free) Sinclair swine and control Hanford swine...

Flow cytometry has become the preferred technique by which critical clinical evaluations are made such as CD4 counts and aneuploid analyses. Mounting concern has arisen over the numerous techniques, reagents, and different flow cytometric employed to determine these data. Several studies have documented significant differences in results when different flow cytometers are utilized to analyze the same sample. Fluorochrome-dependent instrument sensitivity also has been reported by numerous investigators. As more and more procedures are performed by cytometric analysis, light scatter and fluorescence limitations, which appear to be instrument dependent, demonstrate that not all flow cytometers have the same capabilities...

Corticosteroids exhibit extensive hematopoietic effects both in vitro and in vivo. Some of the previously studied effects suggested that corticosteroids may alter hematopoietic toxicity of chemotherapeutic agents. In this study, we examined (1) the optimum dose and schedule of cortisone acetate (CA) to reduce hematopoietic toxicity of carboplatin (CB) and (2) possible mechanisms involved in this protective effect. CA given subcutaneously at 0.5 mg/d per mouse for 7 days before CB reduced CB-induced mortality due to neutropenia from 88% in controls to 14% in CA-treated mice (P < ...

Interleukin-1 (IL-1) has been shown to ameliorate the hematopoietic toxicities of antitumor chemotherapeutic agents in both mice and humans. However, IL-1 toxicity in humans is considerable and is similar to the systemic inflammatory toxicities induced by IL-3, IL-6, and other cytokines with pleiotropic biologic activities, eg, fever, nausea, malaise, and hypotension. We hypothesized that corticosteroids may reduce IL-1 toxicity without reducing IL-1 hematopoietic effects in vivo. C3H/HeJ mice (female, 6 weeks) were treated for 7 days subcutaneously with cortisone acetate (CA), (0...

REVIEW
B P Marmion
Animal virology has made outstanding contributions to preventive medicine by the development of vaccines for the control of infectious disease in man and animals. Cost-benefit analysis indicates substantial savings in health care costs from the control of diseases such as smallpox, poliomyelitis, yellow fever and measels. Areas for further development include vaccines for influenza (living, attenuated virus), the herpes group (varicella: cytomegalovirus), respiratory syncytial virus, rotavirus and hepatitis A, B, and non A/non B...
