Rivers worldwide are under stress from eutrophication and nitrate pollution, but the ecological consequences overlap with climate change, and the resulting interactions may be unexpected and still unexplored. The Po River basin (northern Italy) is one of the most agriculturally productive and densely populated areas in Europe. It remains unclear whether the climate change impacts on the thermal and hydrological regimes are already affecting nutrient dynamics and transport to coastal areas. The present work addresses the long-term trends (1992-2020) of nitrogen and phosphorus export by investigating both the annual magnitude and the seasonal patterns and their relationship with water temperature and discharge trajectories...

Radioisotope leaking from nuclear waste has become an intractable problem due to its gamma radiation and strong water solubility. In this work, a novel porous ZnFC-PA/PSF composite sphere was fabricated by immobilization of ferrocyanides modified zinc phytate into polysulfone (PSF) substrate for the treatment of Cs-contaminated water. The maximum adsorption capacity of ZnFC-PA/PSF was 305.38 mg/g, and the removal efficiency of Cs+ was reached 94.27% within 2 hr. The ZnFC-PA/PSF presented favorable stability with negligible dissolution loss of Zn2+ and Fe2+ (< 2%)...

Aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria (AAPB) are significant bacterial groups in aquatic ecosystems, known for their rapid growth and photoheterotrophic characteristics. However, the distribution and ecological assembly process of AAPB in low irradiation freshwater basins remain unclear, warranting further investigation. In this study, we present the diversity, abundance, spatial variations, ecological process, and community interaction of AAPB in sediment of Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) under low irradiation...

Potential health risks related to environmental endocrine disruptors (EEDs) have aroused research hotspots at the forefront of water treatment technologies. Herein, nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide/schwertmannite nanocomposites (N-TiO2 /SCH) have been successfully developed as heterogeneous catalysts for the degradation of typical EEDs via photo-Fenton processes. Due to the sustainable Fe(III)/Fe(II) conversion induced by photoelectrons, as-prepared N-TiO2 /SCH nanocomposites exhibit much enhanced efficiency for the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA; ca...

In recent years, the malodorous gases generated by sewage treatment plants have gradually received widespread attention due to their sensory stimulation and health hazards. The emission concentration, sensory evaluation and health risk assessment of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) were all explored in two municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with oxidation ditch and anaerobic/oxic treatment process, respectively. The VSCs concentration showed the highest amount in the primary treatment unit in both the two WWTPs (73...

Sulfite-based advanced oxidation technology has received considerable attention for its application in organic pollutants elimination. However, the potential of natural sediments as effective catalysts for sulfite activation has been overlooked. This study investigates a novel process utilizing suspended sediment/sulfite (SS/S(IV)) for degradation of metronidazole (MNZ). Our results demonstrate that MNZ degradation efficiency can reach to 93.1 % within 90 min with 12.0 g SS and 2.0 mM sulfite...

A recent diesel spill (dated January 2019 ± 1 month) in a refilling station is investigated by the Radon deficit technique. The primary focus was on quantifying the LNAPL pore saturation as a function of duration of ageing, and on proposing a predictive model for on-site natural attenuation. A biennial monitoring of the local fluctuating shallow aquifer has involved the saturated zone nine times, and the vadose zone only once. Rn background generally measured in external and upstream wells is elaborated further due to the site characteristics, using drilling logs and phreatic oscillations...

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) play significant roles in the formation, function, and interactions of microalgal-bacteria consortia. Understanding the key roles of EPS depends on reliable extraction and quantification methods, but differentiating of EPS from microalgae versus bacteria is challenging. In this work, cation exchange resin (CER) and thermal treatments were applied for total EPS extraction from microalgal-bacteria mixed culture (MBMC), flow cytometry combined with SYTOX Green staining was applied to evaluate cell disruption during EPS extraction, and auto-fluorescence-based cell sorting (AFCS) was used to separate microalgae and bacteria in the MBMC...

Despite advances in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) efficiencies, multiple contaminants of concern, such as microplastics, pharmaceuticals, and per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) remain largely untreated near discharge points and can be highly concentrated before they are fully mixed within the receiving river. Environmental agencies enforce mixing zone permits for the temporary exceedance of water quality parameters beyond targeted control levels under the assumption that contaminants are well-mixed and diluted downstream of mixing lengths, which are typically quantified using empirical equations derived from one-dimensional transport models...

As awareness of BPA's health risks has increased, many countries and regions have implemented strict controls on its use. Consequently, bisphenol analogues like BPF and BPAF are being increasingly used as substitutes. However, these compounds are also becoming increasingly prevalent in the environment due to production, use and disposal processes. The oceans act as a repository for various pollutants, and recent studies have revealed the extensive presence of bisphenols (BPs, including BPA, BPF, BPAF, etc.) in the marine environment, posing numerous health hazards to marine wildlife...

Discharging improperly treated oily-produced water (OPW) into the environment can have significant negative impacts on environmental sustainability. It can lead to pollution of water sources, damage to aquatic ecosystems and potential health hazards for individuals living in the affected areas. Ceramic hollow fiber membrane (CHFM) technology is one of the most effective OPW treatment methods for achieving high oil removal efficiency while maintaining membrane water permeability. In this study, low-cost calcium bentonite hollow fiber membranes (CaB-HFMs) were prepared from high-alumina calcium bentonite clay with various preparation parameters, including calcium bentonite content, sintering temperature, air gap distance and bore fluid rate...

Topographic complexity is often considered to be closely associated with habitat complexity and niche diversity; however, complex topography per se does not imply habitat suitability. Rather, ecologically suitable habitats may emerge if topographic features interact with environmental factors and thereby alter their surrounding microenvironment to the benefit of local organisms (e.g., resource provisioning, stress mitigation). Topography may thus act as a key modulator of abiotic stressors and biotic pressures, particularly in environmentally challenging intertidal systems...

Reactive chlorine species (RCS) are inevitably generated in electrochemical oxidation process for treating high-salinity industrial wastewater, thereby resulting in the competition with coexisting hydroxyl radicals (•OH) for oxidizing recalcitrant organic compounds. Due to the low redox potentials compared to •OH, the role of RCS has been often overlooked. In this work, we developed an electroactive membrane filtration (EMF) system that had a high removal efficiency (99.1 ± 0.5 %) for tetrabromobisphenol S (TBBPS) at low energy consumption (1...
