Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide (MEKP) is a highly toxic clear liquid used as a solvent. It is a strong oxidizing agent and a corrosive. Acute and chronic toxicity can occur as an occupational hazard. Ingestion is associated with corrosive burns leading to stricture formation, inhalational pneumonitis, acidosis, liver failure and renal failure. In this paper we present a case of a young patient who intentionally ingested MEKP. The patient developed multiple complications including proximal intestinal obstruction, acidosis and acute kidney injury...

INTRODUCTION: Lead poisoning is most commonly caused by occupational exposure. It presents with a myriad of signs and symptoms ranging from mild anemia to frank encephalopathy, depending on the blood lead levels as well as the duration of exposure. Intake of herbal/Ayurvedic medicine may also lead to plumbism as heavy metals are often incorporated in such medications with the belief that such metals have medicinal properties. METHODS: We report a case of lead poisoning caused by Ayurvedic medication...

My experiments lead me to believe that complete occlusion of the small intestine at its lower end will give rise to the occurrence of cholin, neurin and perhaps other bases, provided the food taken contains any considerable quantity of lecithin. It is not improbable that still other poisons are formed by bacterial action from other constituents of the food in cases of intestinal obstruction. While cholin would have to be absorbed in relatively large amounts to exert a marked toxic action in human beings it is otherwise with neurin, which is many times more intense in its action and must be classed with the exceedingly active poisons...

We present a case history of a 24 years old male who developed autonomic dysfunction, intestinal pseudo-obstruction and anemia due to lead poisoning. Concomitant recording of blood levels of lead and autonomic function showed a gradual decline in blood lead level (98.8 microg/dL at week 0, 56 microg/dL at week 6, and 40 microg/dL at week 52) and gradual improvement in autonomic functions. Decrease in blood lead levels with DMSA (Meso-2, 3-dimercaptosuccinic acid) therapy showed improvement in autonomic functions...

The case of a 51-year-old man who ingested 100 mg of felodipine (Plendil, 20 tablets á 5 mg) and 9 g of theophylline (Theospirex retard, 30 tablets á 300 mg) is presented. The patient developed severe hypotension, tachycardia, circulatory insufficiency and paralytic ileus. No ECG effects were observed. Although felodipine led to a reduction in the bioability of theophylline, the serum theophylline concentration 15 h after the admission was 92 mg/L (the therapeutic concentration of theophylline 10-20 mg/L)...

BACKGROUND: Pica is the compulsive eating of nonnutritive substances and can have serious medical implications. Although it has been described since antiquity, there has been no single agreed-upon explanation of the cause of such behavior. METHODS: Databases from MEDLINE and PSYCH-Lit were searched from 1964 to the present to find relevant sources of information using the key words "pica," "obsessive-compulsive disorder," "iron-deficiency anemia," and "nutrition...

We report a case of segmental dilatation of the ileum in a 10-month-old male infant. Intermittent loose black-colored stool passage and normocytic anemia were noted at the initial visits to our hospital. There was no symptom or sign of intestinal obstruction such as abdominal distention or vomiting. On physical examination, he was found to be pale but his abdomen was soft and flat. Digital examination revealed brownish stool tinged with black-colored oil-like stool but no polyp. Laboratory studies excluded coagulopathy, hemolytic anemia and lead poisoning...

In preparing this Position Statement, all relevant scientific literature was identified and reviewed critically by acknowledged experts using agreed criteria. Well-conducted clinical and experimental studies were given precedence over anecdotal case reports and abstracts were not usually considered. A draft Position Statement was then produced and subjected to detailed peer review by an international group of clinical toxicologists chosen by the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology and the European Association of Poisons Centres and Clinical Toxicologists...

The authors present the case of a male patient aged 51 years who, on the background of a chronic intoxication with lead, developed an acute, pseudo-obstructive dilatation of the colon. The diagnosis was established during surgery, and the therapeutic solution consisted in cecostomy with a favourable result. A synopsis is also presented, of the literature concerning this rarely encountered syndrome.

In an industrial area with heavy metal-processing industry investigations were made on 203 children with surgical diseases, questioning whether there is a correlation between blood lead level on one hand, and kind of disease, season of year, load by lead fall-out in the residence on the other hand. A correlation between blood lead level and amount of lead fall-out in the residence of the patients could not be proved.--Seasonal changes did not influence the height of the average blood lead level.--Stress situations like operations and serious diseases had no significant influence either...

In selected chapters of the therapeutic endoscopy we tried to represent secure knowledge, actual tendencies and partly future prognoses. Hereby completeness cannot be expected. However, it became clear that numerous physical principles became useful for the therapy with the endoscope. Chemical techniques, such as the litholysis of gall-stones are only at present used in our field. With all scepticism against the own field of interest one may say that the operative therapeutic endoscopy, as it is seen at the instance of the classification of polyps, has led to an improvement of the diagnostics, Its advantages in the therapeutic field are based on the fact that it substitutes larger operations...

A case of N-3 pyridylmethyl-N' 4 nitrophenyl urea (Vacor) rodenticide poisoning in a 52-year-old man is presented. Vacor is structurally related to alloxan and streptozotocin, agents that have been used extensively to produce diabetes mellitus in laboratory animals. Seven days after ingestion of Vacor, the patient presented in diabetic ketoacidosis complicated by postural hypotension and adynamic ileus. The patient recovered from ketoacidosis but has continued to require insulin. With infusion of arginine, glucagon rose from 185 to 650 pg...
