Obestatin was shown to alleviate renal, gastrointestinal and haemorrhage-induced brain injury in rats. In order to investigate the neuroprotective effects of obestatin on seizure-induced oxidative brain injury, an epileptic seizure was induced with a single intraperitoneal (i.p.) dose of pentylenetetrazole (PTZ, 45mg/kg) in male Wistar rats. Thirty minutes before the PTZ injection, rats were treated with either saline or obestatin (1μg/kg, i.p.). Seizure was video-taped and then evaluated by using Racine's scoring (0-5)...

Diallyl disulfide (DADS) is a degradation product of allicin which is contained in garlic. This study investigated the protective effects of DADS against acetaminophen (AAP)-induced nephrotoxicity and the molecular mechanisms of nephroprotective effects in rats. AAP caused severe nephrotoxicity as evidenced by significant increases in renal tubular cell apoptosis, mitochondria-mediated apoptosis, and up-regulation of nuclear transcription factor kappa-B (NF-κB), cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the kidney with histopathological alterations...

Trichoblastoma is rare, benign skin neoplasm that may be difficult to distinguish from malignant baso-cellular skin cancer. Renal transplant recipients are at increased risk for development of skin malignancies. Resection and histopathological evaluation of a suspicious lesion is mandatory to determine malignant skin changes. We present the first reported case of trichoblastoma in a renal transplant recipient. Proper diagnosis enables less aggressive resection and maintenance of the same immunosuppressive protocol...

BACKGROUND: Human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) is one of the components of telomerase enzyme and its activity is associated with cell proliferation and differentiation. Extracellular signal regulated kinase (ERK)-mitogen activated protein kinase signaling pathway play an important role in hTERT expression. The present study was conducted to ascertain hTERT messenger RNA (mRNA) expression in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and its association with clinicopathological characteristics...

To better clarify the clinical features and therapeutic strategy of CMV infection in lupus nephritis patients, we retrospectively surveyed a total of 40 lupus nephritis patients, who had been hospitalized and underwent renal biopsy and diagnosed as having CMV infection during their hospitalization at our institution within the last 10 years. The percentage of CMV infections in the entire hospitalized lupus nephritis population was 5.3% (40/755). The principal clinical features of the 40 CMV-infected patients were hematological disorders (n = 25), fever (n = 21), liver dysfunction (n = 19), and respiratory symptoms (n = 12)...

PURPOSE: The efficacy of PD-1 Checkpoint Blockade (ChB) as adjuvant therapy in localized clear cell Renal Cell Carcinoma (ccRCC) is currently unknown. The identification of tumor microenvironment (TME) prognostic biomarkers in this setting may help to define which patients could benefit from ChB and to uncover new therapeutic targets. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We performed multiparametric flow cytometry immunophenotypic analysis of T cells isolated from tumor tissue (TIL), adjacent non-malignant renal tissue (RIL) and peripheral blood (PBL), in a cohort of patients (n=40) with localized ccRCC...

We present a case of a patient who took part in a prospective sentinel lymph node (SN) study to investigate the drainage pattern from renal tumors. The patient was treated with laparoscopic radical nephrectomy (LRN), SN and non-SN lymph node dissection (LND) for a clinically node negative (cN0) left renal tumor of 6 cm (cT1b). Histopathological examination revealed a papillary type 2 pT1b renal cell carcinoma (RCC) with two para-aortic metastatic SNs (pN1). No adjuvant treatment was applied. The patient is free of disease at 63 months after surgery...

BACKGROUND: Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is an emerging technique delivering electrical pulses to ablate tissue, with the theoretical advantage to overcome the main shortcomings of conventional thermal ablation. Recent short-term research showed that IRE for the ablation of renal masses is a safe and feasible treatment option. In an ablate and resect design, histopathological analysis 4 weeks after radical nephrectomy demonstrated that IRE-targeted renal tumors were completely covered by ablation zone...

BACKGROUND: Novel therapeutic agents recently introduced for the treatment of cancer have several unusual side effects. An increased incidence of renal cystic lesions, often with features concerning for malignancy or infection, has been reported in patients with anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) - rearranged advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with Crizotinib. Many of these lesions undergo spontaneous resolution despite developing complex features on imaging. We assess the incidence and patterns of evolution of Crizotinib Associated Renal Cysts [CARCs] at our institute and provide histopathology correlation of their benign nature...

It has been revealed in recent studies that Hypericum Perforatum (HP) is influential on cancer, inflammatory diseases, bacterial and viral diseases, and has neuroprotective and antioxidant properties. In this study, we investigated the effect of HP, which is known to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, on kidney I/R damage. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups, and each of the groups had eight rats: The Control Group; the Ischemia/Reperfusion (I/R) Group; and the IR + HP Group which was treated with 50 mg/kg of HP...

Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) is notorious for its unpredictable dissemination patterns involving both lymphatic and haematogenous route without a clear-cut preponderance for any. Unlike other intra-abdominal malignancies like colorectal carcinoma, renal cell carcinoma is often known to metastasize to distant sites even after a confident and unsuspecting curative resection or often as the primary presentation constantly adding and agitating our presentation patterns for this sneaky tumour. Presented below is a case of such an unsuspecting female patient...

While parenchymal metastases are common in solid systemic cancers, subependymal metastases are rare. Approximately half of the reported cases of intraventricular metastases originate from renal carcinoma. A 65-year-old man presented with general fatigue, appetite loss, nausea, and disorientation. Radiological examination revealed diffuse periventricular tumors. The patient underwent an open biopsy via right frontotemporal craniotomy. The patient was diagnosed with metastatic small cell lung carcinoma after histopathological examination...

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common glomerulonephritis worldwide. The clinical spectrum of IgAN varies from minor urinary abnormalities to rapidly progressive renal failure. Evaluation of the disease by repeated renal biopsy is not practical due to its invasive procedure. Urinary sediment miRNAs promise to serve as non-invasive biomarkers to assess kidney injury of IgAN. METHODS: Fifty two biopsy-proven IgAN patients and twenty five healthy controls were enrolled in the study...

Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by lymphocytic and plasmacytic infiltration of the exocrine glands. Tubulointerstitial nephritis (TIN) is the most common type of renal involvement in pSS. However, clinically significant renal involvement is uncommon. Granulomatous interstitial nephritis (GIN) is a rare histopathological entity characterized by the presence of granulomas against a background of interstitial inflammation. GIN is not a typical and commonly seen form of TIN in pSS...

BACKGROUND: Myxomas are rare benign soft tissue tumors. The kidney is an unusual location for this tumor. For this reason, less than 15 cases of renal myxoma have been reported in the English literature. There are no specific clinical and radiological features reported for this tumor that allow a preoperative diagnosis enabling a conservative treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: We report another case of renal myxoma found in a 50-year-old Moroccan woman who presented with a right dull flank pain...

BACKGROUND: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by renal phosphate wasting, hypophosphatemia, reduction of 1,25-dihydroxyl vitamin D, and bone calcification disorders. Tumors associated with TIO are typically phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors that are bone and soft tissue origin and often present as a solitary tumor. The high production of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) by the tumor is believed to be the causative factor responsible for the impaired renal tubular phosphate reabsorption, hypophosphatemia and osteomalacia...
