Drug-induced acute renal failure (ARF) is a public health concern that hinders optimal drug therapy. However, pathological mechanisms of drug-induced ARF remain to be elucidated. Here, we show that a pathological process of drug-induced ARF is mediated by proinflammatory cross-talk between kidney tubular cells and macrophages. Both polymyxin B and colistin, polypeptide antibiotics, frequently cause ARF, stimulated the ERK and NF-κB pathways in kidney tubular cells, and thereby upregulated M-CSF and MCP-1, leading to infiltration of macrophages into the kidneys...

Subnormal levels of liver enzymes, below the lower limit of normal on local laboratory reports, can be useful diagnostically. For instance, subnormal levels of aminotransferases can be observed in vitamin B6 deficiency and chronic kidney disease. Subnormal alkaline phosphatase levels may indicate the presence of hypophosphatasia, Wilson's disease, deficiencies of divalent ions, or malnutrition. Subnormal levels of gamma glutamyl transferase may be seen in cases of acute intrahepatic cholestasis, the use of certain medications, and in bone disease...

Women diagnosed with fumarate hydratase (FH)-deficient uterine leiomyomata are at increased risk of renal cancer. This work suggests a more standardized pathology-genetic counseling referral pathway for these patients, and that research on underlying causes of FH-deficient uterine leiomyomata in the absence of germline FH pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants is needed.

Tubular injury is the most common cause of acute kidney injury. Histopathological diagnosis may help distinguish between the different types of acute kidney injury and aid in treatment. To date, a limited number of study has used deep-learning models to assist in the histopathological diagnosis of acute kidney injury. This study aimed to perform histopathological segmentation to identify the four structures of acute renal tubular injury using deep-learning models. A segmentation model was used to classify tubule-specific injuries following cisplatin treatment...

Arsenic (As) is a heavy metal known for its detrimental effects on the kidneys, but the precise mechanisms underlying its toxicity remain unclear. In this study, we employed an integrated approach combining traditional toxicology methods with functional metabolomics to explore the nephrotoxicity induced by As in mice. Our findings demonstrated that after 28 days of exposure to sodium arsenite, blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine levels were significantly increased, and pathological examination of the kidneys revealed dilation of renal tubules and glomerular injury...

BACKGROUND: Emergency colorectal resections hold a significant position in general surgical practice, and pathologies of the left colon are relatively common. This study was conducted to assess the outcomes of isolated left colon surgeries with benign etiologies, drawing on clinicopathological and biochemical data. METHODS: We carried out a retrospective review and statistical analysis of demographic, clinical, and laboratory data of patients who underwent left colon surgery at the general surgery clinic of a tertiary care hospital, excluding those with malignancy-related emergencies, from January 2017 to January 2022...

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) can provide survival benefits to cancer patients; however, they sometimes result in the development of renal immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Tubulointerstitial nephritis (TIN) is the most representative pathological feature of renal irAEs. However, the clinicopathological entity and underlying pathogenesis of ICI-induced TIN are unclear. Therefore, we compared the clinical and histological features of this condition with those of non-ICI drug-induced TIN. Age and C-reactive protein levels were significantly higher in ICI-induced TIN, but there were no significant differences in renal function...

We present modern data on the role of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in antioxidant protection and gene regulation in acute pancreatitis. Antioxidant enzymes are essential in pathogenesis of numerous diseases. SOD is one of the key enzymes of antioxidant system. In this review, we analyzed activity of this enzyme depending on various factors, mechanisms and role in physiological and pathological processes, in particular, acute pancreatitis. SOD is significantly less active in patients with severe acute pancreatitis accompanied by renal failure, severe circulatory disorders and high mortality...

Conservative treatment to curb progression without dialysis or renal transplantation is widely applicable, but its effectiveness is limited. Here, the inhibitory effect of the novel peptide DR3penA (DHα-(4-pentenyl)-AlaNPQIR-NH2 ), which was developed by our group, on renal fibrosis was assessed in cells and mice with established fibrosis and fibrosis triggered by transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), unilateral ureteral obstruction, and repeated low-dose cisplatin...

In recent years, preclinical research on diabetic kidney disease (DKD) has surged to the forefront of scientific and clinical attention. DKD has become a pervasive complication of type 2 diabetes. Given the complexity of its etiology and pathological mechanisms, current interventions, including drugs, dietary modifications, exercise, hypoglycemic treatments and lipid-lowering methods, often fall short in achieving desired therapeutic outcomes. Iridoids, primarily derived from the potent components of traditional herbs, have been the subject of long-standing research...

In dogs, the most common clinical signs of leishmaniosis include skin lesions and lymphadenomegaly. However, the presence of other nontypical signs has been described, and diagnosing these cases can be challenging.
