OBJECTIVE: To determine factors affecting voiding recovery on the day of Foley catheter removal (postoperative day 7, POD7) after nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy (NSRH) for early-stage cervical cancer. METHODS: Early-stage cervical cancer patients, who underwent type C1 radical hysterectomy between January 2006 and June 2016 were included. Clinical and pathological data were reviewed. Association between inability to attain adequate voiding function on POD7 and potential predicting factors were evaluated in univariate and multivariate analysis...

Elective neck dissection of the N0-neck is routinely performed during salvage laryngectomy (SLE) for recurrent cancer of the larynx or hypopharynx. The therapeutic benefit of additional neck dissection must be weighed against the risk of increased morbidity. In this retrospective analysis, we assessed oncologic parameters of patients who underwent SLE with concurrent bilateral neck dissection for recurrent laryngeal or hypopharyngeal cancer. We compared these data with patients who underwent primary laryngectomy (LE) with bilateral neck dissection for laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer...

RATIONALE: Spinal Giant Cell Tumors (SGCTs) are rare, aggressive, and benign tumors. Their presence in the cervical spine is even more exceptional. There are few reports of cervical GCT in the literature, especially recurrent cases. The treatment are challenging to clinically because radical resection is extremely difficult. PATIENT CONCERNS: In this study, we present the cases of a 25-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman who suffered from recurrent cervical GCT...

Purpose: We report that the reactivity of a novel monoclonal antibody LpMab-23 for human cancer-type podoplanin (PDPN) is a predictor for a poor prognosis of tongue cancer. Patients and Methods: The association between LpMab-23-recognizing cancer-type PDPN expression and clinical/pathological features were analyzed on 60 patients with stage I and II tongue cancer treated with transoral resection of the primary tumor. Results: In the mode of invasion, the LpMab-23-dull/negative cases were significantly larger in cases with low-grade malignancies and without late cervical lymph node metastasis, than in cases with high-grade malignancies and the metastasis...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine regression rates of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) 2 and 3 in women younger than 24 years, followed conservatively for up to 24 months. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective chart review of colposcopy patients in clinic database based on the following: (1) younger than 24 years at first visit; (2) first visit January 1, 2010, to May 31, 2013, and at least 1 follow-up visit after diagnosis; (3) histologic diagnosis of CIN2+; and (4) optimal conservative management (observation for up to 24 months or to 24 years, whichever occurred first)...

OBJECTIVES: To characterize video head impulse testing (vHIT) in definitive Menière's disease and to investigate the relationship between vHIT results and other audiovestibular function tests. DESIGN: Fifty-four patients with certain Menière's disease, that is, patients with clinically definite Menière's disease and endolymphatic hydrops visualized by locally enhanced inner ear MR imaging, were recruited for this study. All patients underwent vHIT. The vestibular-ocular reflex gain at 60 ms and refixation saccades were the outcome parameters measured...

A 24-year-old man complained of a right temporal headache for four weeks. The patient denied any trauma or previous anticoagulation use. He also reported tender right facial swelling. His physical exam was unrevealing except for right cranial nerve (CN) VI palsy, right parotid enlargement, and cervical adenopathy. Laboratory findings were significant for mild leukopenia at 3300 cells/uL. The computed tomography (CT) scan obtained showed a chronic left subdural effusion with a 4 mm midline shift and confirmed right parotid enlargement and cervical lymphadenopathy...

PURPOSE: The aim of this Phase II, non-randomized study was to assess activity and safety of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) before chemoradiation (CT/RT) followed by radical surgery (RS) in locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) patients. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The primary end point was rate of pathologic complete response (pCR). FIGO Stage IB2-IVA patients were administered NACT chemotherapy (paclitaxel 80 mg/m2 , carboplatin AUC 2), for 6 weeks, followed by Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy plus simultaneous boost (total dose of 50...

Objective: To explore the value of Positron-Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) in the prognosis of extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma. Methods: The patients of NK/T cell lymphoma diagnosed from January 2007 to July 2016 in Department of Pathology of Beijing Tongren Hospital were enrolled in this study. Seventy-two in-hospital patients were examined on the invasion of adjecent tissue or organ by PET/CT. The PET/CT results were analyzed retrospectively. Kaplan-Meier method was used to analyze the prognostic value of the positive results by PET/CT on overall survival (OS)...

STUDY DESIGN: This is a systematic review and meta-analysis. OBJECTIVE: To examine the differences in outcomes among current constructs and techniques for anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF) in patients with single or multiple level cervical myelopathy (CM) secondary to cervical spondylosis or ossified posterior longitudinal ligament. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The natural history of CM can be a progressive disease process. In such cases, where surgical decompression is indicated to halt the progression, ACCF is typically chosen for pathology located posterior to the vertebral body...

PURPOSE: Application of the anterior sub-axial cervical approach to the axial spine or the high thoracic spine has been previously described. Evaluation methods to determine the feasibility of these approaches were also described but alternative method was utilized in the current study. We describe our experience expanding the boundaries of anterior cervical approach utilizing a novel algorithm for approach selection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients' files and imaging data of all anterior cervical approach to treat pathologies above C2-3 disc space or below C7-D1 disc space...

Introduction: The Zenker Diverticulum is a rare pathology, the selection of patients for invasive treatments is questionable, as well as the applied therapeutic method. The aim of the study is to evaluate the main methods of classical and endoscopic surgical treatment in this pathology and to correlate pathophysiological aspects with clinical consequences. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We included 36 patients with Zenker hypopharyngeal diverticulum treated in 2010/2017 in two university clinics: 7 patients by classical surgical approach at the General and Esophageal Surgery Clinic of St...

Esophageal surgery has been recognized as very challenging for surgeons and risky for patients. Thoracoscopic approach have proved its benefit in esophageal surgery but has some drawbacks as tremor and limited degrees of freedom, contra-intuitive movements and fulcrum effect of the surgical tools. Robotic technology has been developed with the intent to overcome these limitations of the standard laparoscopy or thoracoscopy. These benefits of robotic procedure are most advantageous when operating in remote areas difficult to reach as in esophageal surgery...

Primary penile cancer is a rare disease. Higher incidence rates occur in underdeveloped countries. Many studies have suggested an association between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and penile cancer. Although HPV can affect the squamous epithelium of the male genitalia similarly to the female genital tract, the association between penile cancer and HPV remains unclear. In the present study, the HPV gene expression was examined in penile cancer tissue using in situ hybridization (ISH). The present study included 41 cases in which penectomy was performed and 3 cases in which tumor resection was performed to treat pathologically-diagnosed penile cancer at Yokohama City University Medical Center, and its 7 affiliated hospitals between April 1990 and March 2010...
