The intensive culture of characid teleosts for ornamental trade is highly dependent on live feed organisms, particularly Artemia nauplii, to provide nutrition through the larval stage. Live feeds have inherent disadvantages relative to prepared microparticulate diets (MDs), specifically availability, labor and cost. In this research, the dependence of larval Paracheirodon innesi on live Artemia was confirmed via a nutritional trial. Next, digestive system ontogeny was characterized from the onset of exogenous feeding through metamorphosis...

An electrochemical study of lyophilized blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) and raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) fruits was carried out using microparticulate deposits from ethanolic extracts of fruits in contact with different aqueous electrolytes. This voltammetry is dominated by the oxidation of anthocyanins. It was hypothesized that under conditions of electrochemical generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), new anthocyanin-derived species with high antioxidant capacity are formed over a wide pH range. In the case of ROS-activated anthocyanins, electrochemical oxidation is associated with loss of sugar moieties...

Cytokinesis-block micronucleus cytome (CBMN-cyt) and alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) bioassays were selected to test genotoxicity. Neutral red uptake (NRU), succinic dehydrogenase activity (MTT) and apoptogenic induction were employed for estimating cytotoxicity. COVID-19 continues to cause an increase in the number of cases and deaths worldwide. Due to the ever-mutating nature of the virus, frequent vaccination against COVID-19 is anticipated. Most of the approved SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are administered using the conventional intramuscular route, causing vaccine hesitancy. Thus, there is a need for an effective, non-invasive vaccination strategy against COVID-19. This study evaluated the synergistic effects of a subunit microparticulate vaccine delivered using microneedles...

Polymeric microparticles are promising biomaterial platforms for targeting macrophages in the treatment of disease. This study investigates microparticles formed by a thiol-Michael addition step-growth polymerization reaction with tunable physiochemical properties and their uptake by macrophages. The hexafunctional thiol monomer dipentaerythritol hexa-3-mercaptopropionate (DPHMP) and tetrafunctional acrylate monomer di(trimethylolpropane) tetraacrylate (DTPTA) were reacted in a stepwise dispersion polymerization, achieving tunable monodisperse particles over a size range (1-10 μm) relevant for targeting macrophages...

The particulate synthesis platform builds on previous efforts and utilizes an aerosol-based technology to generate, calcine, characterize, and aggregate a monodisperse oxide phase particle product. In this study, particles comprised of uranium oxide, incorporated with varying compositions of thorium, were produced. Autoinducers AI-1 and AI-2 play an important role in bacterial quorum sensing (QS), a form of chemical communication between bacteria. The autoinducer N-octanoyl-L-Homoserinehomoserine lactone (C8-HSL) serves as a major inter- and intraspecies communicator or 'signal', mainly for Gram-negative bacteria. C8-HSL is proposed to have immunogenic properties. The aim of this project is to evaluate C8-HSL as a potential vaccine adjuvant. For this purpose, a microparticulate formulation was developed. The C8-HSL microparticles (MPs) were formulated by a water/oil/water (W/O/W) double-emulsion solvent evaporation method using PLGA (poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid)) polymer...

Bioactive hybrid constructs are at the cutting edge of innovative biomaterials. PLA nanofibrous microspheres (NF-MS) were functionalized with zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) and DDAB-modified nZnO (D-nZnO) for developing inorganic/nano-microparticulate hybrid constructs (nZnO@NF-MS and D-nZnO@NF-MS) merging antibacterial, regenerative, and haemostatic functionalities. The hybrids appeared as three-dimensional NF-MS frameworks made-up entirely of interconnecting nanofibers embedding nZnO or D-nZnO. Both systems achieved faster release of Zn2+ than their respective nanoparticles and D-nZnO@NF-MS exhibited significantly greater surface wettability than nZnO@NF-MS...

Tumor cells express antigens that should induce immune-mediated rejection; however, spontaneous rejection of established tumors is rare. Recent evidence suggests that patients suffering from cancer exhibit an elevation in regulatory T cells population, a subset of CD4+ T cells, which suppress tumor recognition and elimination by cytotoxic T cells. This study investigates immunotherapeutic strategies to overcome the immunosuppressive effects exerted by regulatory T cells. A novel immunotherapeutic strategy was developed by simultaneous administration of oral microparticulate breast cancer vaccines and cyclophosphamide, a regulatory T cell inhibitor...

SARS-CoV-2, the causal agent of COVID-19, is a contagious respiratory virus that frequently mutates, giving rise to variant strains and leading to reduced vaccine efficacy against the variants. Frequent vaccination against the emerging variants may be necessary; thus, an efficient vaccination system is needed. A microneedle (MN) vaccine delivery system is non-invasive, patient-friendly, and can be self-administered. Microparticulate systems such as microparticles, microspheres, microcapsules or any particle in a micrometer scale (usually of 1-1000 µm) are widely used as drug delivery systems, because they offer higher therapeutic and diagnostic performance compared to conventional drug delivery forms. These systems can be manufactured with many raw materials, especially polymers, most of which have been effective in improving the physicochemical properties and biological activities of active compounds. This review will focus on the in vivo and in vitro application in the last decade (2012 to 2022) of different active pharmaceutical ingredients microencapsulated in polymeric or lipid matrices, the main formulation factors (excipients and techniques) and mostly their biological activities, with the aim of introducing and discussing the potential applicability of microparticulate systems in the pharmaceutical field...

Amorphous metal-based nanostructures have attracted great attention recently due to their facilitative electron transfer and abundant reactive sites, whereas it remains enigmatic whether the amorphous copper-based nanoparticles (CuNPs) could be achieved. Here, for synthesizing amorphous CuNPs, glutathione was adopted as ligand to inhibit the nucleation and crystallization process via its electrostatic repulsion. By subtly tailoring the solvent polarity, not only the amorphous glutathione functionalized CuNPs (GSH-CuNPs) with phosphorescent performance could be achieved after transferring the non-conjugation of GSH ligand to through-space conjugation, namely clusterization-triggered emission, but also the phosphorescence-off of GSH-CuNPs toward 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) could be realized by the photo-induced electron transfer process through hydrogen bond channel, that was established between carboxyl and amino groups of GSH-CuNPs with the nitryl group of TNT...

The increasing occurrence of obesity and other non-communicable diseases has shifted the human diet towards reduced calorie intake. This drives the market to develop low-fat/non-fat food products with limited deterioration of textural properties. Thus, developing high-quality fat replacers which can replicate the role of fat in the food matrix is essential. Among all the established types of fat replacers, protein-based ones have shown a higher compatibility with a wide range of foods with limited contribution to the total calories, including protein isolate/concentrate, microparticles, and microgels...
