VACTERL association is diagnosed based on the non-random co-occurrence of at least 3 out of 6 congenital malformations. The prevalence is thought to be less than 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 40,000. There is no known link between VACTERL association and metopic synostosis in the literature. There were 122 operated cases of metopic synostosis at our institution from 1999 to 2023, with a 2.3:1 male-to-female ratio. The authors describe the co-occurrence of VACTERL association and metopic synostosis in 3 female patients with no identifiable genetic variants...

Reconstructing scalp defects after basal cell carcinoma removal in elderly patients is challenging. This case report emphasizes Matriderm® as a successful alternative, addressing limitations of traditional methods. The application of Matriderm® in resource-limited scenarios adds insights to surgical literature, and its' usage addresses challenges in patients, contributing to surgical knowledge.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate potential differences in surgical subspecialty match rates between medical schools with and without elective rotations in the respective surgical subspecialties. DESIGN: Data on duration of surgical rotations were retrieved from each school's public website. Fisher exact tests were performed to identify any statistically significant differences in surgical specialty match rates by allopathic versus osteopathic and elective clinical exposure...

BACKGROUND: Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) is associated with skin sensitivity and mainly activated by capsaicin and heat. Interestingly, troxerutin can inhibit TRPV1 activation. However, its efficacy in reducing skin sensitivity remains undetermined. AIMS: We evaluated the efficacy of troxerutin in alleviating skin sensitivity using clinical tests and in vitro experiments. METHODS: For the in vitro experiment, HaCaT keratinocytes were pretreated with different concentrations of troxerutin, followed by incubation with 50 μM capsaicin for 1, 24, or 48 h...

Orthognathic surgery is increasingly utilized to correct facial deformities and dental malocclusions, as well as to enhance facial aesthetics. Significant advancements in surgical planning and execution have made it more widespread and accessible. However, unfavorable outcomes or complications can occur, leading to potentially severe and possibly long-term consequences, such as cranial nerve injuries. This literature review investigates the cranial nerve complications associated with orthognathic surgery. We conducted an extensive search across available databases, analyzing relevant studies published up to September 30, 2023...

BACKGROUND: The correction of tear trough deformity poses a significant challenge in the context of facial rejuvenation. Our aim was to introduce a technique that corrects tear trough deformity during transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty using minced orbital fat grafts. METHODS: The medical records of patients who underwent lower blepharoplasty from January 2019 to December 2021 were reviewed. The study included patients with various grades of tear trough deformity, who underwent lower blepharoplasty using minced orbital fat grafts and followed up for at least 6 months...

PURPOSE: Subcutaneous seroma formation (SF) is commonly seen after axillary bromhidrosis surgeries and its treatment can be challenging and long. Current prevention methods are not consistent, and the treatment includes repeated aspirations and drains, both are associated with higher risk for infections. The purpose of this article is to present a novel and simple technique of intraoperative hypertonic saline irrigation (IHSI) to axillary bromhidrosis subcutaneous dead space, which prevents postoperative SF and enables early drain removal due to reduced secretions...

BACKGROUND: Macromastia is a physically and psychologically distressing condition for adolescents. While reduction mammaplasty is often the best treatment, risk factors for adolescent wound complications remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the impact of obesity and other predictors of postoperative wound complications following adolescent reduction mammaplasty using a national database. METHODS: The 2012-2019 National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Pediatric (NSQIP-P) databases were reviewed to identify primary reduction mammaplasty encounters...

BACKGROUND: Arterial embolism is a rare complication caused by hyaluronic acid (HA) injection. However, it is one of the most serious complications. Once it happens, the complication would have a great and long-term impact on patients. Intra-arterial recanalization has been reported for recovering the visual acuity in patients with visual loss caused by hyaluronic acid. There is little report about the benefits of superselective intra-arterial recanalization therapy for skin wounds caused by hyaluronic acid vascular embolization...

BACKGROUND: Immediate prosthetic reconstruction has evolved to a prepectoral position. A technique is described where the pectoral and serratus fascia is raised from superiorly. Initially, Vicryl mesh was used to close the superior fascial defect, but later abandoned by using primary closure for tissue expanders, or creating a pocket in the infraclavicular pectoralis muscle after prosthesis (DTI) insertion. The inframammary fold is also reinforced. Patients with a BMI > 30 have axillary liposuction...

BACKGROUND: With an increasing need for thin flap, the use of super-thin anterolateral thigh (ALT) flaps, raised above the supra-superficial fascia, has drawn great attention. Controversy remains regarding whether such thin flap elevation could affect postoperative outcomes, encompassing perfusion-related complications (PRC) and donor morbidities. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of super-thin ALT flap-based reconstruction compared with those of suprafascially elevated flaps...

BACKGROUND: Implant-based breast reconstruction is the most prevalent form of breast reconstruction. Autologous fat grafting (AFG) was conceptualized as an alternative to implant-based breast reconstruction and was found to be a reliable reconstruction modality. However, usually, a few grafting rounds are required to create the desired shape and size of the breast. Current literature describes ample experience with AFG as an adjunct to implant-based breast reconstruction for improving appearance...

The unique dual-lumen and baffle design of the IDEAL IMPLANT Structured Saline breast implant gives it specific advantages over both silicone gel-filled and the original saline-filled implants. This internal baffle structure also gives it an appearance on various radiologic imaging studies that may be misinterpreted as a rupture because of similarities to the well-known radiologic appearance of a ruptured silicone gel implant. Patients may present with various misinterpreted imaging studies, highlighting the need for plastic surgeons and radiologists to be familiar with the normal appearance of the intact IDEAL IMPLANT and be able to distinguish it from a ruptured IDEAL IMPLANT...

PURPOSE: Treatment for polysyndactyly of the toes aims at cosmetic improvement but the lateroplantar rotation of the new fifth toe remains challenging. This study evaluated our novel surgical procedure for postaxial polysyndactyly of the toes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with postaxial polysyndactyly involving the fourth, fifth, and sixth toes treated in 2007 to 2017 with a minimum follow-up duration of 1 year were retrospectively investigated. Our aims of surgery for this condition were to avoid excessive lateroplantar rotation of the new fifth toe by using a proximally elongated plantar "shark-fin flap" and to make the tip of this toe appear to be naturally pointing inward by using the dog-ear component of the flap on the tip of the toe...
