For decades, transition metal hydrides have been at the forefront of numerous photocatalytic reactions leveraging either photoacid or photohydride generation. Of upmost importance is the nature of the M-H bond itself, which is typically the major site of photochemical reactivity, particularly in Ir(III) hydrides featuring metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited states. As a departure point for understanding the fundamental spectroscopy and photophysics of the MLCT excited states of Ir(III) diimine hydrides, cis-[Ir(bpy)2 H2 ]+ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) and its deuterated analogue cis-[Ir(bpy)2 D2 ]+ were prepared and investigated...

In the present study, we report the green synthesis of NiO nanoparticles using Aegle marmelos as a fuel and this method is ecofriendly and cost effective. The plant Aegle marmelos is used in the field of pharmaceuticals to cure diseases like chronic diarrhea, peptic ulcers and dysentery in India for nearly 5 centuries. The as-prepared nanoparticles were confirmed as pure face centered cubic phase and single crystalline in nature by XRD. The formation of agglomerated spherical nanoparticles was shown by HR-SEM and HR-TEM images...

Conventional organic fluorophores lose their ability to fluoresce after repeated exposure to excitation light due to photobleaching. Therefore, research into emerging bright and photostable nanomaterials has become of great interest for a range of applications such as bio-imaging and tracking. Among these emerging fluorophores, metal oxide-based nanomaterials have attracted significant attention as a potential multifunctional material with photocatalytic and angeogenisis abilities in addition to fluorescnce applications...

The physical properties of doped multifunctional compounds are commonly tuned by controlling the amount of dopants, but this control is limited because all the properties are influenced simultaneously by this single parameter. Here, we present a strategy that enables the fine-tuning of a specific combination of properties by controlling the reduction of dopants. The feasibility of this approach was demonstrated by optimizing the near-IR photoluminescence of strontium titanate SrTiO3 :Ni for potential applications in biomedicine for a range of absorbance in the visible/near-IR region...

LaTiO2 N photocatalysts were prepared by thermal ammonolysis of flux-synthesized La2 Ti2 O7 and La2 TiO5 , and were investigated for water oxidation. Though LaTiO2 N derived from La2 TiO5 appears defect-free by UV/Vis/near-IR and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, its performance is much lower than that of conventional La2 Ti2 O7 -derived LaTiO2 N with defects. It is shown by Mott-Schottky analysis that La2 TiO5 -derived LaTiO2 N has significantly lower donor density; this can result in insufficient built-in electric field for the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes...

We report, the enhanced photocatalytic behaviour of Cu doped ZnS micro crystals. ZnS and different concentrations of Cu doped ZnS microcrystals were prepared. X-ray diffraction confirms the crystalline and phase of the particles. Morphology and sizes were studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Recorded optical absorption spectra show a band for around 365nm for pure ZnS, but there is a broad band in the near infrared regime for the Cu-doped ZnS microcrystals which are attributed to the d-d transitions of Cu2+ ions...

In the present study, g-C3N4/Fe3O4/Ag3PO4/AgCl nanocomposites endowed with efficient photocatalytic activity under visible-light irradiation have been successfully prepared by a facile ultrasonic-irradiation method. The prepared samples were characterized by XRD, EDX, AAS, SEM, TEM, UV-vis DRS, FT-IR, TG, PL, and VSM techniques. Rhodamine B, methyl orange, fuchsine, and phenol were selected as pollutants to evaluate photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared samples. Among the samples, the g-C3N4/Fe3O4/Ag3PO4/AgCl (30%) nanocomposite displayed the highest photocatalytic activity...

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have emerged as a novel class of porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for catalysis application because of their exceptional thermal and chemical stability. Inspired by the broad absorption of ZIF-67 in UV-vis-near IR region, we explored its excited state and charge separation dynamics, properties essential for photocatalytic applications, using optical (OTA) and X-ray transient absorption (XTA) spectroscopy. OTA results show that an exceptionally long-lived excited state is formed after photoexcitation...

A highly asymmetric A2BC type zinc phthalocyanine (Zn-di-PcNcTh) has been designed and synthesized. The Zn-di-PcNcTh used a π electron rich thiophene ring in place of the benzenoid rings of phthalocyanine which acted as an electron donor, diphenylphenoxy substituents to retard aggregation and a carboxyl-naphthalene unit as an electron acceptor. The asymmetric phthalocyanine shows a strongly split Q-band and wide spectral absorption in the visible/near-IR light region, which can extend the spectral response region of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) from ∼450 nm to more than 800 nm...

Although semiconductor photocatalysis has been reported for more than 40 years, the spectral response is still focused on the region of UV-Visible and it is seldom extended to more than 600 nm. In this work, visible/near-IR-light-driven 2,9,16,23-tetranitrophthalocyanine iron (FeTNPc)/bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) organic-inorganic heterostructures have been synthesized by a two-step solvothermal method. Facile ultrasonic-irradiation method was applied for photosensitization of ZnO by combining with AgBr and Ag2CO3 particles through preparation of novel ternary nanocomposites. The prepared samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, EDX, UV-Vis DRS, FT-IR, BET, and PL techniques. Photocatalytic activity was investigated by degradation of rhodamine B under visible-light irradiation. A series of tungsten-containing mesoporous SBA15 with different tungsten contents were prepared through a direct co-condensation sol-gel method and then analyzed by various techniques. XRD patterns revealed that the original mesoporous morphology was maintained after introducing tungsten species and forms of tungsten species were changed from incorporated tungsten to isolated tungsten species or low oligomeric tungsten oxide species, and finally to crystalline WO3 with the increase of tungsten precursor content, which were also proven by HRTEM images, UV-Vis DRS, and FT-IR spectra...

In this study, a novel titanium dioxide nanotubes and graphene (GR-TNT) nano-composite was synthesized through a hydrothermal method. The introduction of GR was aimed to reduce the rapid electron-hole recombination of TiO2 thus improving their phtotcatalytic behavior in real application. The catalysts were characterized by using FT-IR, UV-Vis, XRD, TEM. The degradation results showed that the combined GR and TNT composite could obviously increase the photocatalysis efficiency for Reactive Black 5. The RBk5 removal can reach up to 90% under the near visible light irradiation for 3 h with the irradiation intensity less than 1...

Doping of nickel into AgGaS2 yields a new absorption band, at a wavelength longer than the intrinsic absorption band of the AgGaS2 host. The doped nickel forms an electron donor level in a forbidden band of AgGaS2 . The nickel-doped AgGaS2 with rhodium co-catalyst shows photocatalytic activity for sacrificial H2 evolution under the light of up to 760 nm due to the transition from the electron donor level consisting of Ni(2+) to the conduction band of AgGaS2 . Apparent quantum yields for the sacrificial H2 evolution at 540-620 nm are about 1 %...

A synthetically convenient and scalable SILAR (successive ion layer adsorption and reaction) method is used to make air-stable films of silver and gold nanoparticles supported on alumina scaffolds. This solution-based deposition technique yields particles devoid of insulating capping agents or ligands.
