PURPOSE: Partial nephrectomy is standard-of-care treatment for small renal masses. As utilization of partial nephrectomy increases and includes larger and complex tumors, the risk of conversion to radical nephrectomy likely increases. We evaluated incidence and reason for conversion to radical nephrectomy in patients scheduled for partial nephrectomy by surgeons participating in MUSIC (the Michigan Urologic Surgery Improvement Collaborative). MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients in whom robotic partial nephrectomy was planned were stratified by completed procedure (robotic partial nephrectomy vs radical nephrectomy)...

OBJECTIVES: Asthma is a chronic lung condition that can be exacerbated when triggered by viruses. Pandemic public health restrictions aimed to reduce COVID-19 transmission indirectly effected other circulating viruses. This study assessed the impact of the pandemic and associated public health measures on acute paediatric asthma across four tertiary sites in three Canadian provinces. We queried whether pandemic-related changes would impair preventive care and delay presentation to care, increasing asthma exacerbation severity...

UNLABELLED: Systems consolidation is a common feature of learning and memory systems, in which a long-term memory initially stored in one brain region becomes persistently stored in another region. We studied the dynamics of systems consolidation in simple circuit architectures modeling core features of many memory systems: an early- and late-learning brain region and two sites of plasticity. We show that the synaptic dynamics of the circuit during consolidation of an analog memory can be understood as a temporal integration process, by which transient changes in activity driven by plasticity in the early-learning area are accumulated into persistent synaptic changes at the late-learning site...

WAS is a multifaceted monogenic disorder with a broad disease spectrum and variable disease severity and a variety of treatment options including allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and gene therapy (GT). No reliable biomarker exists to predict disease course and outcome for individual patients. BACKGROUND: Mohs micrographic surgery efficiently treats skin cancer through staged resection, but surgeons' varying resection rates may lead to higher medical costs. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cost savings associated with a quality improvement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective cohort study using 100% Medicare fee-for-service claims data to identify the change of mean stages per case for head/neck (HN) and trunk/extremity (TE) lesions before and after the quality improvement intervention from 2016 to 2021...

Hybrid immunity, acquired through vaccination followed or preceded by a COVID-19 infection, elicits robust antibody augmentation. We hypothesize that maternal hybrid immunity will provide greater infant protection than other forms of COVID-19 immunity in the first 6 months of life. We conducted a case-control study in Israel, enrolling 661 infants up to 6 months of age, hospitalized with COVID-19 (cases) and 59,460 age-matched non-hospitalized infants (controls) between August 24, 2021, and March 15, 2022. Infants were grouped by maternal immunity status at delivery: Naïve (never vaccinated or tested positive, reference group), Hybrid-immunity (vaccinated and tested positive), Natural-immunity (tested positive before or during the study period), Full-vaccination (two-shot regimen plus 1 booster), and Partial-vaccination (less than full three shot regimen)...

White Striping (WS), Wooden Breast (WB), and Spaghetti Meat (SM) are documented breast muscle myopathies (BMM) affecting broiler chickens' product quality, profitability and welfare. This study evaluated the efficacy of our newly developed deep learning-based automated image analysis tool for early detection of morphometric parameters related to BMM in broiler chickens. Male chicks were utilized, and muscle samples were collected on d 14 of rearing. Histological procedures, including microscopic scoring, blood vessel count, and collagen quantification, were conducted...

Nearly 25 years ago, Dr. Patricia Goldman-Rakic published her review paper, "The 'Psychic' Neuron of the Cerebral Cortex," outlining the circuit-level dynamics, neurotransmitter systems, and behavioral correlates of pyramidal neurons in the cerebral cortex, particularly as they relate to working memory. In the decades since the release of this paper, the existing literature and our understanding of the pyramidal neuron have increased tremendously, and research is still underway to better characterize the role of the pyramidal neuron in both healthy and psychiatric disease states...

Aerobic exercise has been shown to have established benefits on motor function in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the impact of exercise on depressive symptoms in PD remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of regular exercise, specifically using a forced running wheel, on both motor performance and the prevalence of depression in a unilateral 6-OHDA-lesioned rat model of PD. The behavioral outcomes of exercise were assessed through the rotarod test (RT), forelimb adjusting step test (FAST), sucrose consumption test (SCT), and novelty sucrose splash test (NSST)...

Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. fragariae ( Fof ) race 1 is avirulent on cultivars with the dominant resistance gene, FW1 , while Fof race 2 is virulent on FW1 -resistant cultivars. We hypothesized there was a gene-for-gene interaction between a gene at the FW1 locus and an avirulence gene ( AvrFW1 ) in Fof race 1. To identify a candidate AvrFW1 , we compared genomes of twenty-four Fof race 1 and three Fof race 2 isolates. We found one candidate gene that was present in race 1, absent in race 2, highly expressed in planta, and homologous to a known effector, secreted in xylem 6 ( SIX6 )...

Early detection of Alzheimer's disease (AD) represents an unmet clinical need. Beta-amyloid (Aβ) plays an important role in AD pathology, and the Aβ42/40 peptide ratio is a good indicator for amyloid deposition. In addition, variants of the APOE gene are associated with variable AD risk. Here we describe the development and validation of high-throughput liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) assays for plasma Aβ40 and Aβ42 quantitation, as well as apolipoprotein E (ApoE) phenotype determination as a surrogate for APOE genotype...

Our results contribute to understanding school nurses' experiences during the pandemic and highlight the need for training and support for their vital role...

Cerebrovascular Reactivity (CVR) refers to the ability of cerebral blood vessels to dilate or constrict under the effect of vasoactive substances and can be estimated using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). Computation of CVR maps is relevant in various brain diseases and requires specialized data processing. We introduce CVRmap, an opensource software that automates the computation of CVR map. The 3q29 deletion (3q29Del) is a copy number variant (CNV) with one of the highest effect sizes for psychosis-risk (>40-fold).
