We present the case of a 34-year-old woman with recurrent depressive disorder who ingested purple foxglove with suicidal intent. She bought a foxglove plant (Digitalis purpurea) over the internet and used all of its leaves to make a tea that she then drank over a period of a few hours. Seventeen hours later, she developed abdominal pain, emesis and bradycardia and was admitted via the emergency department to the intensive care unit for further treatment and monitoring. The plasma digoxin concentration measured 3...

Umbilical arterial catheters are often placed at birth in critical ill neonates. Advantages of umbilical arterial catheterization include continuous blood pressure monitoring, accurate blood gas and frequent blood samplings. We described the off-label use of a third generation polyurethane power injectable 3 Fr single lumen peripheral inserted central catheter as umbilical arterial catheter. This clinical case series opens new scenarios about the off-label use of power PICC in newborns. Prospective studies are needed to evaluate the safety and advantages of PICCs as umbilical catheters over the conventional old generation polyurethane neonatal catheters...

INTRODUCTION: Risk patients admitted to hospital wards may quickly develop haemodynamic deterioration and early recognition has high priority to allow preventive intervention. The peripheral perfusion index (PPI) may be an indicator of circulatory distress by assessing peripheral perfusion non-invasively from photoplethysmography. We aimed to describe the characteristics of PPI in hospitalized patients since this is not well-studied. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients admitted due to either acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) or after major abdominal cancer surgery were included in this study...

OBJECTIVE: To explore the role of echocardiography in pre-procedural,peri-procedural and post-procedural stages of transapical transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) in patients with aortic regurgitation (AR). METHODS: 31 patients with pure/dominant AR at a high risk on surgery were enrolled in this study. The degree of their aortic regurgitation was evaluated before TAVI,as well as the related diameters of aortic root and the left ventricular systolic function measured by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE)...

Heart failure is marked by frequent hospital admissions, often as a consequence of pulmonary congestion. Current gold standard techniques for thoracic fluid measurement require invasive heamodynamic access and therefore they are not suitable for continuous monitoring. Changes in thoracic impedance (TI) may enable non-invasive early detection of congestion and prevention of unplanned hospitalizations. However, the usefulness of TI to assess thoracic fluid status is limited by inter-subject variability and by the lack of reliable normalization methods...

Advanced MR imaging methods have an essential role in classification, grading, follow-up and therapeutic management in patients with brain tumors. With the introduction of new therapeutic options, the challenge for better tissue characterization and diagnosis increase, calling for new reliable non-invasive imaging methods. In the current study we evaluated the added value of a combined protocol of blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) imaging during hyperoxic challenge (termed hemodynamic response imaging (HRI)) in an orthotopic mouse model for glioblastoma under anti-angiogenic treatment with B20-4...

Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a life support system for infants and children with cardio-respiratory failure. During ECMO it is possible to have unstable cerebral haemodynamics, due to strong oscillations in the systemic variables, among other factors, which may lead to brain damage in the patients. Therefore, monitoring the coupling between cerebral haemodynamics and systemic signals might alert us of possible imminent brain damage. In this study we explore the use of orthogonal and oblique subspace projections in the decoupling of these variables, by assessing the ratio between the projections of the haemodynamic variables, onto the subspace spanned by the systemic variables, and the original signals...

Invasive monitoring during early resuscitation was performed. To compare the heamodynamic results of severely burned patients, the results of 38 patients hospitalized between 1988 and 1991 in the burn centre of Lyon were retrospectively reviewed. Survivors and non-Survivors' data were compared. No difference existed between the two groups in age, unit burn score, fluid requirement and dose of dobutamine. Survivors had a significantly higher cardiac index, O2 delivery and systolic blood pressure index than non-survivors...

This study compared the heamodynamic effects of sufentanil with those observed following concomitant sufentanil and high-dose vecuronium administration to determine whether vecuronium induces bradyarrhythmias. Sixty coronary artery bypass patients were stratified into beta blocker (n = 30) or non-beta blocker (n = 30) groups and following induction with sufentanil (9 +/- 3 micrograms.kg-1) and midazolam (0.07 +/- 0.04 mg.kg-1), received either succinylcholine 1 mg.kg-1 (SxCh), vecuronium 0.3 mg.kg-1 (Vec 0...
