Sinus lift elevation restores bone mass at the maxilla in edentulate patients before the placement of dental implants. It consists of opening the lateral side of the sinus and grafting beta-tricalcium phosphate granules (β-TCP) under the olfactory membrane. Bone biopsies were obtained in five patients after 60 weeks. They were embedded undecalcified in poly(methyl methacrylate) (pMMA); blocks were analyzed by nanocomputed tomography (nanoCT); specific areas were studied by Raman microspectroscopy. Remnants of β-TCP were osseointegrated and covered with mineralized bone; osteoid tissue was also filling the inner porosity...

Prevention of implant-associated infections at an early stage of surgery is highly desirable for the long-term efficacy of implants in dentistry and orthopedics. Infection prophylaxis using conventional antibiotics is becoming less effective due to the development of bacteria resistant to multiple antibiotics. An ideal strategy to conquer bacterial infections is the local delivery of antibacterial agents. Therefore, antimicrobial peptide (AMP) eluting coatings on implant surfaces is a promising alternative...

BACKGROUND: In patients with painful ankle arthrodesis, the surgical treatment is challenging, and may include takedown of ankle arthrodesis and conversion to a total ankle replacement (TAR). This procedure is technically demanding given the altered anatomy after arthrodesis. Few studies have evaluated TAR in the setting of prior arthrodesis. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What intraoperative and perioperative complications were observed in patients who underwent conversion of an ankle arthrodesis to a TAR? (2) Was durable fixation achieved at short term, and what was the alignment of the components? (3) What subsequent surgical procedures were performed, including revisions? (4) What improvements were observed in pain, tibiotalar range of motion (ROM), and quality of life? METHODS: Between January 2007 and December 2014, 18 patients with a painful ankle arthrodesis underwent conversion to TAR at our tertiary referral center...

In vitro studies offer the insights for the understanding of the mechanisms at the tissue-implant interface that will provide an effective functioning in vivo. The good biocompatibility of zirconium makes a good candidate for biomedical applications and the attractive in vivo performance is mainly due to the presence of a protective oxide layer. The aim of this study is to evaluate by in vitro and in vivo approach, the influence of surface modification achieved by anodisation at 30 and 60V on zirconium implants on the first steps of the osseointegration process...

Nanosurface modification of Titanium (Ti) implants and prosthesis is proved to enhance osseointegration at the tissue-implant interface. However, many of these products lack adequate antibacterial capability, which leads to implant loosening. As a curative strategy, in this study, nanotextured Ti substrates embedded with silver nanoparticles were developed through a single step hydrothermal processing in an alkaline medium containing silver nitrate at different concentrations (15, 30 and 75μM). Scanning electron micrographs revealed a non-periodically oriented nanoleafy structure on Ti (TNL) decorated with Ag nanoparticles (nanoAg), which was verified by XPS, XRD and EDS analysis...

Dental implants extraction, achieved either by applying torque or pullout force, is used to estimate the bone-implant interfacial strength. A detailed description of the mechanical and physical aspects of the extraction process in the literature is still missing. This paper presents 3D nonlinear dynamic finite element simulations of a commercial implant extraction process from the mandible bone. Emphasis is put on the typical load-displacement and torque-angle relationships for various types of cortical and trabecular bone strengths...

Immediate loading has proven to be a predictable modality for restorations with titanium dental implants. An increasing number of articles indicate that zirconia implants might osseointegrate to a similar extent in this context. This 5-year case report describes an outpatient maxillary restoration with eight immediately loaded zirconia implants. Implantation followed extensive bone augmentation. At the 5-year follow-up, all implants were still well osseointegrated clinically and radiologically. No major bone loss or peri-implantitis had occurred in spite of temporary insufficient patient compliance...

Bone deficiencies in the jaws of edentulous patients limit the possibility of successful placement and osseointegration of endosseous implants. Bone resorption is defined as a vertical and horizontal loss of quality and quantity in the residual bone ridges; lack of bone structure requires bone grafting procedures to enable implant placement and to improve the function, predictability, and longevity of implants. The objective of this case study was to demonstrate the feasibility of a novel cell therapy treatment for localized jaw bone defects with tissue repair cells composed of a mixture of bone marrow-derived cells, including CD90+ mesenchymal stem cells and CD105+ monocytes/macrophages, and xenograft blocks, in what would be a safe and efficacious approach to the regeneration of localized craniofacial bone defects...

Surface modification on titanium implants plays an important role in promoting mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) response to enhance osseointegration persistently. In this study, nano-scale TiO2 nanotube topography (TNT), micro-scale sand blasted-acid etched topography (SLA), and hybrid sand blasted-acid etched/nanotube topography (SLA/TNT) were fabricated on the surfaces of titanium implants. Although the initial cell adherence at 60 min among TNT, SLA and TNT/SLA was not different, SLA and SLA/TNT presented to be rougher and suppressed the proliferation of MSC...

The majority of transfemoral and transtibial amputees can be functionally fitted with conventional suspension sockets; however, due to socket problems using conventional stump care, 60% of the patients have limited function and even in younger patients approximately one sixth are unable to wear the prosthesis daily. After the introduction of transcutaneous osseointegrated prostheses (TOP) the inherent problems of socket-stump care can be avoided for these patients. Against this background this article reviews the recent clinical development of TOP in Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia and USA currently in nine centers...
