The genitourinary (GU) system is commonly affected by disseminated lymphoma. Rarely, lymphoma can originate from and remain localized to one of the GU organs and thus presents as primary extranodal disease. Up to 40% of lymphomas present as extranodal disease, with only 3% having the GU system as the primary site of involvement. This article describes and correlates the radiologic and pathologic features of extranodal lymphomatous disease affecting the GU system with specific focus on the kidneys, adrenal glands, testicles, and ovaries...

Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP) is an immune-mediated systemic vasculitis generally found in children. The standard manifestations of HSP are palpable purpura, arthritis, abdominal pain, and renal complications. Although less common, there are significant urological manifestations associated with HSP. The primary objective of this review is to encourage better understanding and management of HSP by emphasizing the common and rare manifestations of HSP, how they are diagnosed, and the latest treatment options for mild to severe complications...

TMP21, known as p23 protein, is one important member of the p24 protein families. The degradation of TMP21 is mediated by the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway, as with the other presenilin-associated γ-secretase complex members. NFAT plays a very important role in regulation of human TMP21 gene expression. Compared with the function of TMP21, the studies about the distribution of this protein in human tissues are limited. We collected 19 normal adult human tissues from a healthy adult man died in a traffic accident and did examination of all the tissues collected for ICH, western blot and RT-PCR...

BACKGROUND: Improving quality and effectiveness of health care is one of the priorities of health policies. Hospital or physician volume represents a measurable variable with a relevant impact on effectiveness of health care. A recent Italian law, the "spending review", calls for the definition of "qualitative, structural, technological and quantitative standards of hospital care". There is a need for an accurate evaluation of the available scientific evidence in order to identify these standards, including the volume of care above or below which the public and private hospitals may be accredited (or not) to provide specific health care interventions...

Thymosins beta 4 (Tβ4) is a member of the beta-thymosins family, a family of peptides playing essential roles in many cellular functions. Our recent studies suggested Tβ4 plays a key role in the development of human salivary glands and the gastrointestinal tract. The aim of this study was to analyse the presence of Tβ4 in the human adult and foetal genitourinary tract. Immunolocalization of Tβ4 was studied in autoptic samples of kidney, bladder, uterus, ovary, testicle and prostate obtained from four human foetuses and four adults...

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) of the genitourinary system is a very rare disease. Only 1 % of NHL are primary genitourinary lymphomas, most commonly of testicular origin. Secondary infiltration from disseminated lymphoma can be found in all the genitourinary organs. We report on five patients with genitourinary lymphoma who were diagnosed at our department: one case of primary testicular lymphoma and four patients with secondary lymphomatous infiltration of kidney, bladder, prostate and testicles, respectively...

Positron emission tomography (PET) using ((18)F)2-fluoro-D-2-desoxyglucose (FDG) has been shown to be a highly sensitive and specific imaging modality in the diagnosis of primary and recurrent tumors and in the control of therapies in numerous non-urologic cancers. It was the aim of this review to validate the significance of PET as a diagnostic tool in malignant tumors of the urogenital tract. A systematic review of the current literature concerning the role of PET for malignant tumors of the kidney, testicles, prostate, and bladder was carried out...

Hemospermia was reported to occur following extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy of lower ureteric stones. Because no studies showed clearly the possible effect of extracorporeal shock waves (ESW) on the male genital system, we were prompted to study this effect. Eighteen male white New Zealand rabbits were divided into three groups (six in each) and subjected to different doses of ESW (2000, 3000 and 4000) using a Dornier MFL 5000. Shocks were focused on the lower parts of the bladder. Four animals were used as controls...

We report a case of congenital ejaculatory duct obstruction treated successfully by transurethral incision. A 33-year-old man was referred for evaluation of primary infertility. His semen analysis showed volumes of 1.7 ml at average and azoospermia. Clinical examinations revealed right undescended testicle, absence of the left kidney and axial rotation of right kidney. Left vasogram showed dilated but intact seminal vesicle with no contrast material visible in the bladder. Following removal of right undescended testicle, transurethral incision of the left side of the prostatic urethral floor near the vermontanum was performed...
