OBJECTIVE: To discuss the link between inner ear decompression sickness and patent foramen ovale. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Monocentric and retrospective study on decompression sickness of the inner ear requiring hyperbaric chamber treatment, from 2014 to 2021. RESULTS: Sixty-one patients of inner ear decompression sickness were included in this study. Twenty-four patients had vestibular injuries, 28 cochlear injuries and 9 cochleo-vestibular injuries...

PURPOSE: To identify all reported cases of retinal artery occlusion (RAO) associated with patent foramen ovale (PFO) in the literature and present a similar case of CRAO from our clinic. METHODS: PubMed database was searched for studies reporting RAO in individuals with PFO. Relevant data were tabulated and reviewed. We estimated each case's Risk of Paradoxical Embolism (RoPE) score. RESULTS: 23 cases of CRAO (n=10; including ours), BRAO (n=10), and CILRAO (n=3) were reviewed...

INTRODUCTION: There is an extending use of percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) as therapy for PFO-associated cryptogenic strokes. The aim of our study was to investigate the clinical practice of percutaneous closure of PFO and to analyse the variables for decision-making on the selection of patients for this procedure. METHOD: A prospective observational multicentric survey was conducted using all the cases of cryptogenic stroke/transient ischaemic attack associated with PFO recorded in the NORDICTUS hospital registry during the period 2018-2021...

Cryptogenic stroke is an old definition that designates an ischemic stroke with no identifiable cause. The term of the embolic stroke of undetermined source was then introduced to identify non-lacunar strokes in whom thromboembolism was the likely mechanism. This subgroup of cryptogenic strokes remains heterogeneous with many potential and possibly associated embolic causes. Covert atrial fibrillation is probably less often involved than initially expected, in contrast to intracranial and extracranial atherosclerosis...

The purpose of this study is to assess the role of transesophageal echocardiography at the Dax Hospital Center based on indications, patients´ profile, results, cost-effectiveness and consistency with prescribers´ expectations. We conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study at the Cardiovascular Laboratory of the Dax Hospital Center from January 2016 to December 2018. The study included 434 exams out of 460 requested. The variables of interest were: demographic profile of the study population, indications, results, cost-effectiveness and consistency with prescribers´ expectations...

"Patent foramen ovale and stroke Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a remnant of the fetal circulation whose role in the occurrence of ischemic stroke is now well established. Trancatheter PFO closure followed by long-term antiplatelet therapy reduces by approximately 60% compared to antithrombotic therapy alone, the risk of stroke recurrence in patients aged 60 years or less with an ischemic stroke attributed to a PFO. Patients with PFO associated with an atrial septal aneurysm or with a large right-to-left shunt might be the best candidates...

Patent foramen ovale (FOP) is the most prevalent cause of cryptogenic strokes in people under 60 years old. Although it is usually asymptomatic, it has a high risk of producing paradoxical embolism and, therefore, stroke with indeterminate outcomes. The study should be started based on clinical suspicion, and includes a multidisciplinary assessment and a determination of the type of treatment to be performed. The therapeutic possibilities range from conservative treatment (indefinite antithrombotic treatment), to its percutaneous closure (currently the most widely used)...

Background: Transesophageal echo (TEE) bubble study is the current gold standard for patent foramen ovale (PFO) diagnosis, but it has the disadvantage of being semi-invasive and not exempted from risks. The aim of this study was to determine the accuracy of TTE compared to TEE for PFO diagnosis. Methods and results: a systematic review was done on Medline with the terms "transthoracic echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, patent foramen ovale, diagnosis" yielding published literature of the last ten years...

The association of cerebral ischemic attack with patent foramen ovale has not been extensively studied, and frequently the site of origin of embolism is not detected despite routine studies. We present the case of a young patient with ischemic stroke and permeable oval foramen in the context of May Thurner syndrome. The May Thurner syndrome is an entity scarcely studied in the medical literature and it has also been infrequently related to ischemic vascular cerebral accident, but in patients with permeable oval foramen without evidence of the emboligen source, it is interesting to rule it out as a cause of paradoxical embolism...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We hypothesized that formation of left atrial appendage (LAA) thrombi of unknown origin is associated with altered fibrin clot properties and blood hypercoagulability. METHODS: In a case-control study, we investigated 32 patients with a history of LAA thrombus after successful anticoagulant treatment versus 32 control subjects matched for age, sex, and diabetes mellitus. All subjects had previous ischemic stroke, transient ischemic attack, or migraine associated with patent foramen ovale...

OBJECTIVES. A training model was designed for learners and young physicians to polish their skills in clinical practices of pinpointing and puncturing trigeminal ganglion. METHODS. A head model, on both cheeks of which the deep soft tissue was replaced by stuffed organosilicone and sponge while the superficial soft tissue, skin and the trigeminal ganglion were made of organic silicon rubber for an appearance of real human being, was made from a dried skull specimen and epoxy resin. Two physicians who had experiences in puncturing foramen ovale and trigeminal ganglion were selected to test the model, mainly for its appearance, X-ray permeability, handling of the puncture, and closure of the puncture sites...
