Chikungunya infection leads to acute/chronic polyarthritis/polyarthralgia causing long-term morbidity among patients. Prognosis of post-chikungunya chronic arthritis (PCA) is of utmost necessity for proper disease management. Arthritic and hepatic biomarkers were evaluated among chikungunya patients without arthritis, with acute arthritis and with post-chikungunya chronic arthritis in the study. Serum levels of arthritic [CRP (C-reactive protein), anti cyclic-citrullinated-peptide (anti-CCP) antibody, soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R), cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP)] and hepatic [ALT (alanine aminotransferase), AST (aspartate aminotransferase), ALP (alkaline phosphatase), albumin and bilirubin] biomarkers of 167 chikungunya positive patients were determined by sandwich-ELISA/immunoturbidimetry/auto-analyser...

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an autoimmune astrocytopathy against foot processes of aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channels. Patients with NMOSD tend to have other coexisting autoimmune/connective tissue diseases. However, AQP-4-antibody-positive NMOSD coexisting with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is rare. AS is an immune-mediated disorder, a subset of axial spondyloarthropathies, which commonly manifests as chronic inflammatory back pain in young people, and it has a strong association with HLA-B27...

INTRODUCTION: Methotrexate (MTX) is a highly effective therapy for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, it has been associated with a range of liver related adverse events. The aim of our study was to evaluate the prevalence rate of liver fibrosis in RA patients and to assess the correlation of cumulative MTX dose with hepatic fibrosis in our context. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study, whose goal is to describe and analyze the factors correlated with the liver fibrosis in RA patients treated with methotrexate especially the cumulative dose of MTX, along the period lying between January 2012 and March 2019...

OBJECTIVES: 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme-A (HMG Co-A) reductase inhibitors (statins) are standard treatment for hyperlipidaemia. In addition to lipid-lowering abilities, statins exhibit multiple anti-inflammatory effects. The objectives of this study were to determine whether treatment of patients with RA with lovastatin decreased CRP or reduced disease activity. METHODS: We conducted a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled 12 week trial of lovastatin vs placebo in 64 RA patients with mild clinical disease activity but an elevated CRP...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The modulatory role of prolactin in autoimmune regulation is well established. Hyperprolactinemia is often associated with autoimmune disease like systemic lupus erythematosus and autoimmune thyroid diseases. The objective was to compare levels of direct and indirect autoimmune factors in different categories of hyperprolactinemia cases and predict the direction of association between hyperprolactinemia and autoimmune factors, if any. METHODS: A total of 102 hyperprolactinemia cases (>100 ng/mL serum prolactin level) were included along with 24 controls...

BACKGROUND: Viruses are common and are involved in the etiology of idiopathic rheumatological diseases. Hepatitis B virus (HBV), a member of the family Hepadnaviridae and hepatitis C virus (HCV), play an important role in the undetermined etiology of arthritis. The clinical manifestations of hepatitis B and C show similarities with various diseases, such as rheumatic diseases. Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) is a specific serological marker for rheumatoid arthritis. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to analyze anti-CCP and rheumatoid factor (RF) levels in patients with a hepatitis B and C infection...

OBJECTIVE: Rheumatoid factor (RF) positivity that may occur in a number of patients with hepatitis B (HBV) infection poses challenges in terms of differential diagnosis with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). On the other hand, antibodies to cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) may prove to be an important marker for differential diagnosis of the two conditions. This study aimed to assess anti-CCP and RF positivity among patients with hepatitis B and rheumatoid arthritis. In clinical practice of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), various kinds of laboratory tests are required for diagnosis, assessment of the disease activity, assessment of complications and risk factors before starting therapy, and assessment of adverse effects during the therapy. Anemia, thrombocytosis, and leukocytosis are common in active RA. During RA therapies, liver function tests (including ALT and AST) and renal function tests (including serum creatinine and urinalysis) should be performed. Anti-CCP antibody is an especially useful marker for diagnosis of RA, and the presence of the antibody has been included in ACR/EULAR 2010 RA classification criteria...

The various types of glomerulonephritis, including many forms of vasculitis, are responsible for about 15% of cases of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Arterial hypertension represents a frequent finding in patients suffering from glomerulonephritis or vasculitis and hypertension also serves as an indicator for these severe types of diseases. In addition, there are symptoms and signs like hematuria, proteinuria and renal failure. Especially, rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis (RPGN) constitutes a medical emergency and must not be missed by treating physicians...

In the last years, the detection of antibodies (Abs) against citrullinated peptides (ACPA) has largely replaced rheumatoid factor (RF) as the most helpful biomarker in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Current assays detect ACPA reactivity with epitopes on various different citrullinated proteins. Among these, anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP) Abs have been widely demonstrated to be an important diagnostic and prognostic tool because of their high specificity. Recently, citrullinated vimentin, a protein highly released in synovial microenvironment, has been identified as potential autoantigen in the pathophysiology of RA and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of Abs directed against a mutated citrullinated vimentin (anti-MCV) was developed...

Hepatitis C virus infection (HCV) is one of the best mimes in medicine. About 40-70% of patients suffering from this disorder develop at least one extra-hepatic disorder that can have a rheumatic nature (arthralgias, arthritis, vasculitis and sicca syndrome) and must be differentiated from the primitive rheumatic diseases. In addition, HCV infection can also alter the laboratory tests. Several alterations of first line laboratory tests can be usually found in both chronic HCV infection and chronic inflammatory rheumatic disorders...
