A diagnosis of HIV poses secondary medical risks to patients, ranging from infections to neoplastic conditions. Regarding skin cancer, these risks extend beyond the well known association with Kaposi sarcoma and include Merkel cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and high-risk melanomas. Despite evidence of these risks, knowledge and awareness remain low, among care providers for people living with HIV, individual patients, and even some specialists in dermatology. Crucially, medical organisations do not adequately address this concern, as there is an absence of treatment guidelines for the screening and management of skin cancer for people living with HIV...

Treating atopic dermatitis (AD) in pregnant or breastfeeding women, and in women and men with AD aspiring to be parents is difficult and characterized by uncertainty, as evidence to inform decision-making on systemic anti-inflammatory treatment is limited. This project mapped consensus across dermatologists, obstetricians and patients in Northwestern Europe to build practical advice for managing AD with systemic anti-inflammatory treatment in men and women of reproductive age. Twenty-one individuals (sixteen dermatologists, two obstetricians and three patients) participated in a two-round Delphi process...

BACKGROUND: As the use of smartphones continues to surge globally, mobile applications (apps) have become a powerful tool for healthcare engagement. Prominent among these are dermatology apps powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), which provide immediate diagnostic guidance and educational resources for skin diseases, including skin cancer. OBJECTIVE: This article, authored by the EADV AI Task Force, seeks to offer insights and recommendations for the present and future deployment of AI-assisted smartphone applications (apps) and web-based services for skin diseases with emphasis on skin cancer detection...

BACKGROUND: Significant disparity in gender distribution exists among medical specialties. Residency program websites are a main source of preliminary program information for candidates, and website content may influence a prospective applicant's sense of belongingness within a particular program. Given the importance of the residency program website as a recruiting tool, this study sought to examine and compare the presence of gendered language and imagery on residency program websites across various specialties...

In the second part of this Continuing Medical Education article on paraneoplastic pemphigus/paraneoplastic autoimmune multiorgan syndrome (PNP/PAMS), its diagnostic criteria, investigative work-up, and management are reviewed. PNP/PAMS is a rare autoimmune blistering disorder associated with high morbidity and mortality. Recognizing PNP/PAMS's key features and its diagnostic criteria is critical in initiating appropriate work-up. Evaluating PNP/PAMS requires knowledge of its findings on histopathology, direct immunofluorescence, indirect immunofluorescence, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay...

Becoming ill while traveling is an unfortunate but common event, with gastrointestinal, febrile, dermatologic, and respiratory symptoms predominating. However, many illnesses acquired abroad can be prevented or controlled with evidence-based preventive measures and judicious use of appropriate self-care and local medical care. It is important that travelers know how to use international medical care and are aware of available tools to help them identify appropriate medical care in another country. Discussion of evacuation insurance is a crucial part of the pretravel medical evaluation...

INTRODUCTION: During the preclinical years, students typically do not have extensive exposure to clinical medicine. When they begin their clinical rotations, usually in the third year, the majority of the time is spent on core rotations with limited experience in other fields of medicine. Students then must decide on their careers early in their fourth year. We aimed to analyze how often medical students change their career preferences between the end of their second and their fourth year...

Paraneoplastic pemphigus/paraneoplastic autoimmune multiorgan syndrome (PNP/PAMS) is a highly fatal autoimmune blistering disease. The condition occurs in patients with underlying benign or malignant neoplasms, most commonly lymphoproliferative disorders. Both humoral and cell-mediated immunities contribute to the pathogenesis, and autoantibodies against plakin family proteins are characteristic. Patients typically present with severe stomatitis and polymorphous skin lesions, which are often resistant to treatment...

Hair loss is devastating to the patient, but the diagnosis and treatment of alopecia are also difficult for primary care providers and even dermatologists. Given recent advances in the field, there has never been a more pressing time to reevaluate and improve upon the significant clinical skills needed to accurately diagnose and treat our patients with hair loss. This CME activity on alopecia is designed to (1) educate dermatologists in a simple, succinct fashion on the identification of, and the distinction between, the diverse types of hair loss and (2) discuss how to manage them...

Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DiHS), also known as drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), is a severe cutaneous adverse reaction (SCAR) characterized by an exanthem, fever, and hematologic and visceral organ involvement. Anticonvulsants, antibiotics, and allopurinol are the most common triggers. The pathogenesis involves a complex interplay between drugs, viruses, and the immune system primarily mediated by T-cells. DiHS/DRESS typically presents with a morbilliform eruption 2-6 weeks after drug exposure, and is associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and risk of relapse...

The differential diagnosis includes other cutaneous adverse reactions, infections, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, and neoplastic disorders. Three sets of diagnostic criteria have been proposed; however, consensus is lacking. The cornerstone of management is immediate discontinuation of the suspected drug culprit...
