Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a leading cause of homelessness, yet little evidence exists about effective strategies to assist IPV survivors as they work to avoid homelessness while freeing themselves from abuse. An ongoing demonstration evaluation is examining if and how one promising model assists IPV survivors in obtaining safe and stable housing over time. The Domestic Violence Housing First (DVHF) model involves providing IPV survivors with mobile advocacy and/or flexible funding, depending on individual needs, in order to attain these goals...

Dimenhydrinate is an over-the-counter antihistaminergic medication with anticholinergic properties used to treat nausea or motion sickness worldwide. There is a well-established correlation between the use of anticholinergic medications and dementia, however, it is unclear if a causal role exists. We report a case of minor neurocognitive disorder in a woman in her 40s with several years of high-dose daily dimenhydrinate abuse who subsequently developed significant delusional beliefs. Her clinical presentation was confounded by numerous other factors that could have impacted her cognition, such as a longstanding presumed learning disability, ankylosing spondylitis with adalimumab treatment, extensive cannabis use or potential development of a primary psychotic disorder...

Elder mistreatment (EM) is a complex problem, with response and prevention requiring contributions from professionals from many disciplines. Community-based multi-disciplinary teams (MDTs) that conduct meetings to discuss challenging cases and coordinate services are a common strategy to ensure effective collaboration. Though they play an important role in EM identification, intervention, and prevention, hospitals and hospital-based healthcare professionals have been particularly difficult to engage in MDTs...

BACKGROUND: Elder abuse is a multidimensional problem of public importance. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 16% of older people were victims of elder abuse. A study conducted by HelpAge India in 2018 showed that Mangaluru ranks the highest in elder abuse (47%). Given the scarce literature, this study sought to determine the prevalence of elder abuse and its associated sociodemographic factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among the senior population in the rural and urban field practice a medical college in Mangaluru for one and a half years...

Older adults are thought to be more susceptible to scams, yet understanding the relationship between chronological age and victimization is limited by underreporting. This study avoids underreporting bias by merging four longitudinal databases of Americans ( N  = 1.33 million) who paid money in response to mail scams over 20 years. We investigate the risk of repeat victimization and victimization by multiple scam types over the life course. Victims in their 70s and 80s are 9% more likely to experience another victimization incident than those in their 50s...

Increasing use of social media in forensic mental health evaluations will lead to new challenges that must be resolved by forensic practitioners and the legal system. One such dilemma is the discovery of information that would typically trigger a legal duty and professional ethics obligation for mental health professionals to breach doctor-patient confidentiality to promote public safety and prevent harm to vulnerable third parties. Although the law and professional organizations offer clear guidance for practitioners in the treatment role, there is currently no clarity from the law or instruction from professional organizations on what mental health professionals should do if they discover such information during a confidential forensic evaluation...

Old age is characterized by reflection and a retrospective examination of the multiple meanings of various life experiences, including lifelong abuse. Forgiveness is found to have a salutary effect, especially for older adults. To understand the place and role of forgiveness in the reflective process during aging, we performed a secondary analysis of in-depth, semi-structured interviews ( N  = 78) with older women survivors of abuse. Inductive thematic analysis was based on concepts developed deductively from the literature review...

Reports indicate an increase in the incidence of violence against the elderly in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). This study aimed to determine the types and risk factors of elder abuse in KSA. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted of abuse among the elderly (65 years and older; n  = 128) reported in the National Family Safety Registry (NFSR) between April 2017 and December 2021. Homicide-suicide as a criminal act is a distinct subcategory of homicide in which the assailant kills his wife and/or her children in a relationship that has been broken down. The present case is about the dyadic deaths of an 89-year-old male and an 82-year-old female who are in a relationship as intimate partners (as husband and wife). In the early autumn of 2020, an event report was received in the Police District of Plovdiv about a woman who was found dead in her home. Her husband's body was found next to hers in the same building, with the clinical features of a coma - the man was breathing but unresponsive...

Elder abuse is a national public health challenge that can have dire consequences for the older adults who experience it in any form. The Senior Companion Program presents a unique opportunity to address this public health challenge. An in-person training for Senior Companion volunteers across Ohio on how to recognize and report elder abuse was developed, implemented, and evaluated prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Evaluation consisted of surveys distributed prior to and at the conclusion of the training. A total of 302 volunteers were trained with a survey response rate of 76%...

Elder abuse is a worldwide problem with serious consequences for individuals and society. The recognition of elder abuse is complex due to a lack of awareness and knowledge. The mandatory reporting code on domestic violence of The Royal Dutch Medical Association was followed and measures were taken by the general practitioner...

Financial exploitation (FE) is one of the most common reports to Adult Protective Services (APS) and the cases are often complex. Consequently, APS caseworkers report FE investigations to be among the most difficult while simultaneously reporting low confidence in productive outcomes for these investigations. This necessitates finding ways to support APS FE investigations. This paper describes the structure, process, and formative findings of a collaboration between forensic accounting examiners and APS workers to investigate complex cases of FE...

Due to the rise in scams perpetrated against older adults, Adult Protective Service workers are more frequently involved in investigating these matters. The COVID-19 pandemic has hit elderly people the hardest in terms of severity and mortality. However, it is also evident that children and adolescents have been significantly impacted and experienced major disruptions in their lives. The psychological, mental, and developmental repercussions have been major and have led to a reshaping of drug abuse dynamics and substance addiction. The authors have outlined a narrative review of the major issues affecting adolescents and their mental well-being by clarifying the lingering effects and pandemic aftermath, especially on drug abuse, developmental aspects, and behavioral addiction...
