Stiffness switchable materials (e.g., supramolecular polymers, metals) that alter their shape and mechanical properties in response to specific stimuli are potentially utilized in the structural engineering field but still limited due to the use of petroleum-based synthetic monomers and large energy consumption. Herein, a sustainable and facile solvent casting strategy is proposed to fabricate the "hydroplastic wood" with shape and stiffness switchable properties via cell wall wetting, cell wall softening and subsequent moisture evaporation...

For the first time, a fast and easy extraction method based on a unique reusable and switchable deep eutectic solvent (made of octylamine, succinic acid, and water as precursors) was presented and utilized for the microextraction and determination of curcumin as a model analyte. The main factors used to induce a phase transition in the as-prepared deep eutectic solvent were solutions of NaOH and HCl. Among the standout characteristics of the suggested deep eutectic solvent are the removal of toxic organic solvents like THF, the lack of a need for centrifugation, and the ability to be reused in subsequent extractions...

Nucleophilic substitution of pertosylated pillar[5]arene (P-OTs) with commercially available sulfur containing nucleophiles (KSCN, KSAc, and thiophenol), yields a series of sulfur-functionalised pillar[5]arenes. DLS results and SEM images imply that these pillararene macrocycles self-assemble in acetonitrile solution, while X-ray crystallographic evidence suggests solvent-dependent assembly in the solid state. The nature of the sulfur substituents decorating the rim of the pillararene controls binding affinities towards organic guest encapsulations within the cavity and dictates metal-ion binding properties through the formation of favorable S-M2+ coordination bonds outside the cavity, as determined by 1H NMR and fluorescence spectroscopic experiments...

The hexacyano[3]radialene radical anion (1) is an attractive catholyte material for use in redox flow battery (RFB) applications. The substitution of cyano groups with ester moieties enhances solubility while maintaining redox reversibility and favorable redox potentials. Here we show that these ester-functionalized, hexasubstituted [3]radialene radical anions dimerize reversibly in water. The dimerization mode is substitution pattern dependent and can be switched in solution. Stimuli-responsive behavior is achieved by exploiting an unprecedented tristate switching mechanism, wherein the radical can be toggled between the free radical, a π-dimer, and a sigma-dimer -- each with dramatically different optical, magnetic, and redox properties -- by changing the solvent environment, temperature, or salinity...

Molecular separations involving solvents and organic impurities represent great challenges for environmental and water-intensive industries. Novel materials with intrinsic nanoscale pores offer a great choice for improvement in terms of energy efficiency and capital costs. Particularly, in applications where gradient and ordered separation of organic contaminants remain elusive, smart materials with switchable pores can offer efficient solutions. Here, we report a hierarchically networked porous organic cage membrane with dynamic control over pores, elucidating stable solvent permeance and tunable dye rejection over different molecular weights...

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are promising for lignin dissolution and extraction. However, they usually possess high polarity and are difficult to recycle. To overcome this drawback, a variety of switchable ionic liquids (SILs) composed of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) and alcohols was synthesized and screened. According to the thermodynamic modeling suggestions, the selected DBU-HexOH SIL was coupled with hydrogen-bond donors to form switchable-DES (SDES) systems with moderated viscosity, conductivity, and pH while maintaining switchability...

Hierarchical self-assemblies of soft matter involving triggerable or switchable structures at different length scales have been pursued toward multifunctional behaviors and complexity inspired by biological matter. They require several and balanced competing attractive and repulsive interactions, which provide a grand challenge in particular in the "bulk" state, i.e., in the absence of plasticizing solvents. Here, we disclose that zwitterionic bis- n -tetradecylphosphobetaine, as a model compound, shows a complex thermally switchable hierarchical self-assembly in the solvent-free state...
