Corncob degradation is an issue that needs to be address for it to be further utilized as bioenergy. We explored a new comprehensive degradation strategy for corncob. First, restaurant wastewater was used to improve the corncob biochemical characteristics and partly degrade the lignocelluloses. The effect of hydrothermal (HTP) and Ca(OH)2 pretreatments on the biogas produced by the anaerobic digestion of sugarcane bagasse (SCB) was studied. HTP, Ca(OH)2 and combination pretreatment had significant effects on hemicellulose and lignin degradation during pretreatment and methane yield through digestion. To optimize the anaerobic digestion of grape pomace under mesophilic conditions, continuous digesters were operated at different hydraulic retention times (HRT) (30, 20, 15 and 10 days) equivalent to organic loading rates (OLR) of 2.5, 3.7, 5.7 and 7.3 kg COD m-3 d-1 , respectively. This study evaluated the effect of steam explosion on the chemical composition and biomethane potential of corn stover using temperatures ranging between 140 and 220°C and pretreatment times ranging between 2 and 15min. Biodegradation kinetics during the anaerobic digestion of untreated and corn stover, pretreated at two different intensities, 140°C for 5min and 180°C for 5min, were studied in tandem. Results showed that pretreatment at 160°C for 2min improved the methane yield by 22%. The impact of various phenolic compounds, vanillic acid, ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid on anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic biomass (hemp straw and miscanthus) was studied. Such phenolic compounds have been known to inhibit biogas production during anaerobic digestion. The different phenolic compounds were added in various concentrations: 0, 100, 500, 1000 and 2000mg/L. A difference in inhibition of biomethane production between the phenolic compounds was noted. Hydrolysis rate, during anaerobic digestion of miscanthus was inhibited up to 50% by vanillic acid, while vanillic acid had no influence on the initial rate of biogas production during the anaerobic digestion of hemp straw...

Previously, a unique co-compost produced by composting empty fruit bunch with anaerobic sludge from palm oil mill effluent, which contributed to establishing a zero-emission industry in Malaysia.
