Results: Multimodal imaging and ophthalmic examination demonstrated findings consistent with ONH drusen, in association with BVMD, in 5 patients. Conclusion: We report the association of BVMD with ONH drusen in 5 patients...

PURPOSE: To determine whether the diameter of Bruch's membrane opening (BMO) can distinguish mild papilledema from pseudopapilledema using optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS: The medical records of pediatric patients with pseudopapilledma due to optic nerve head (ONH) drusen, patients with papilledema, and normal control subjects were retrospectively reviewed. All eyes underwent OCT imaging of the BMO and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). Transverse horizontal diameter of the BMO and papillary height were measured...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of optic nerve head drusen (ONHD) in clinically normal subjects using enhanced depth imaging (EDI) optical coherence tomography (OCT) and to evaluate associated factors. DESIGN: Prospective, cross-sectional, observational study. PARTICIPANTS: Total of 130 clinically normal subjects. METHODS: Serial horizontal and vertical EDI OCT B-scans (interval between scans, ∼30 μm) of the optic nerve head (ONH) were obtained in both eyes of clinically normal subjects...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence of visual field defects and choroidal neovascular membranes (CNVM) in a cohort of pediatric patients with optic nerve head drusen (ONHD). METHODS: The medical records of children with ONHD seen at a single center from January 2012 to July 2014 were retrospectively reviewed to identify patients who had a dilated fundus examination, fundus photography, spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT)/enhanced-depth imaging (EDI) of the optic nerve head (ONH), SITA fast 24-2 Humphrey visual field (HVF) testing, lumbar puncture, and ocular ultrasound...

PURPOSE: To investigate changes of inner retinal layers and optic nerve head (ONH) in patients with dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and demonstrate the pattern of these changes. METHODS: A total of 76 eyes classified as having dry AMD and 76 control eyes were included. Ophthalmologic evaluations included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) assessment, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), and Humphrey visual field (VF) test. The drusen area and volume were determined using the automated algorithm of the SD-OCT software...

PURPOSE: To describe a case of bilateral optic nerve head drusen (ONHD) in a pediatric patient and the complementary use of advanced noninvasive imaging techniques to confirm this diagnosis. CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old female adolescent with type 1 diabetes and no ocular history was seen at a routine screening without complaints. Visual acuity was 20/20 bilaterally, and visual fields using frequency doubling technology (Zeiss Humphrey Systems, Dublin, CA) were within normal limits...

PURPOSE: To evaluate optic nerve head (ONH) parameters, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, and macular thickness by using Cirrus HD spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) in young patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). METHODS: ONH parameters, RNFL thickness, and macular thickness were measured and compared between 36 eyes from 36 young RP patients (RP group; mean age, 23.08 years) and 70 eyes from 70 healthy young subjects (control group; mean age, 22...

PURPOSE: To report the histopathologic findings of a case of bilateral massive optic nerve head (ONH) drusen. METHODS: A 59-year-old man presented with bilateral massive ONH drusen and secondary compromise of the retinal vasculature leading to vision of counting fingers at 1 ft in the left eye and 20/30 in the right eye. The inferior one half of the left ONH druse was excised resulting in no light perception vision postoperatively. RESULTS: Energy-dispersive spectroscopy suggested the composition of the ONH druse to be calcium phosphate (Ca3[PO4]2), which has implications on pathogenesis of neuronal cell death in ONH drusen...

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP), one of the most common forms of hereditary retinal degeneration, is characterized by night blindness and constricted visual fields. In addition to bone spicule pigmentation, other ocular findings may include posterior subcapsular cataracts, cystoid macular edema, and hyaline bodies or drusen of the optic nerve. Rarely, optic nerve head (ONH) edema has been reported to be associated with RP. A 44-year-old white male with RP and neurosensory hearing loss (Usher's syndrome type II) presented to our clinic for routine examination...

It is proposed that drusen of the optic nerve head (ONH) may provide a useful model for the study of diseases which affect the vicinity of the optic disc. Several sensitive and revealing tests of inner retinal/optic nerve function have been applied in this investigation. Fundus Photo Perimetry has confirmed that little correlation exists between visual field defects and the location of ophthalmoscopically visible ONH drusen. The Flashing Repeat Static Test (FRST) was found to be abnormal in half of our patients, indicating probable ascending dysfunction in optic nerve fibers beyond the lamina cribrosa...
