Experimental characterization of the structural, electronic and dynamic properties of dilute systems in aqueous solvents, such as nanoparticles, molecules and proteins, are nowadays an open challenge. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is probably one of the most established approaches to this aim as it is element-specific. However, typical dilute systems of interest are often composed of light elements that require extreme-ultraviolet to soft X-ray photons. In this spectral regime, water and other solvents are rather opaque, thus demanding radical reduction of the solvent volume and removal of the liquid to minimize background absorption...

BACKGROUND: The incorporation of bimetallic magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) in microextraction methods is an emerging trend due to the improved magnetic susceptibility offered by these solvents, which relies on the presence of metallic components in both the cation and the anion. This feature favors easy magnetic separation of these solvents in analytical sample preparation strategies. However, reported liquid-phase microextraction methods based on bimetallic MILs still present an important drawback in that the MILs are highly viscous, making a dispersive solvent during the microextraction procedure necessary, while also requiring a tedious back-extraction step prior to the chromatographic analysis...

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of persistent chemicals that have been associated with a diverse array of adverse environmental and human health related effects. In addition to a growing list of health concerns, PFAS are also ubiquitously used and pervasive in our natural and built environments, and they have an innate ability to be highly mobile once released into the environment with an unmatched ability to resist degradation. As such, PFAS have been detected in a wide variety of environmental matrices, including soil, water, and biota; however, the matrix that largely dictates human exposure to PFAS is drinking water, in large part due to their abundance in water sources and our reliance on drinking water...

In the agricultural sector, ruminants are the largest methane (CH4 ) emission source and many efforts have been undertaken to reduce these greenhouse gas emissions, while compromising animal health and physiology. On the other hand, ruminal CH4 , which is biomethane, is in high demand, especially in its liquid form (LBM) that can be used as high energy density fuel. However, CH4 released from a ruminant is immediately mixed with air and highly diluted (<0.1%), challenging CH4 capture technologies. Here we aimed to construct a cryogenic pilot system to capture and liquefy enteric CH4 released from dairy cows kept in respiration chambers...

The extensive global use of neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) has led to widespread human exposure, necessitating the development of effective methods for large-scale biomonitoring. However, current methods are inadequate in simultaneously and accurately detecting various NNIs or their metabolites (m-NNIs). In this study, we aimed to establish a robust method using solid-phase extraction (SPE)-ultra high performance liquid chromatography tandem Q-Orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS) for the simultaneous determination of 12 NNIs and 6 m-NNIs in human urine...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The contribution of cardiac computed tomography (CT) for the detection and characterization of prosthetic heart valve (PHV) complications is still limited due mainly to artifacts. Computed tomography systems equipped with photon-counting detectors (PCDs) have the potential to overcome these limitations. Therefore, the aim of the study was to compare image quality of PHV with PCD-CT and dual-energy dual-layer CT (DEDL-CT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two metallic and 3 biological PHVs were placed in a tube containing diluted iodinated contrast inside a thoracic phantom and scanned repeatedly at different angles on a DEDL-CT and PCD-CT...

In the context of the quest for the Organic Laser Diode, we present the multiscale fabrication process optimization of mixed-order distributed-feedback micro-cavities integrated in nanosecond-short electrical pulse-ready organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). We combine ultra-short pulsed electrical excitation and laser micro-cavities. This requires the integration of a highly resolved DFB micro-cavity with an OLED stack and with microwave electrodes. In a second challenge, we tune the cavity resonance precisely to the electroluminescence peak of the organic laser gain medium...

Ostarine is frequently misused as a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) in sports. Consequently, there is a pressing need for reliable and simple approaches to monitor its presence in biological systems. In this work, we developed a two-dimensional analytical method utilizing online solid-phase extraction (online-SPE) in conjunction with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (triple quadrupole). This automated 2D separation approach is characterized by minimum manual steps in the sample preparation (only dilute-and-shoot), reflecting high sample throughput and the reliability of analytical data...

Physicochemical examinations of very high dilution (UHD) solutions subjected to certain physical factors (such as shaking) are becoming more frequent and are increasingly producing conclusive results. A much less studied phenomenon is the transfer of molecular information (i.e., UHD signals of dilute substances) from one liquid to another without an intermediate liquid phase. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of such a transfer of the UHD signal from the UHD solutions to the receiver solution, in particular, if the molecular source used in the donor solutions was the biologically active antibodies to interferon-gamma molecule...

Antibody glycosylation plays a crucial role in the humoral immune response by regulating effector functions and influencing the binding affinity to immune cell receptors. Previous studies have focused mainly on the immunoglobulin G (IgG) isotype owing to the analytical challenges associated with other isotypes. Thus, the development of a sensitive and accurate analytical platform is necessary to characterize antibody glycosylation across multiple isotypes. In this study, we have developed an analytical workflow using antibody-light-chain affinity beads to purify IgG, IgA, and IgM from 16 μL of human plasma...

In low-disorder, two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs), the fractional quantum Hall states at very small Landau level fillings (ν) terminate in a Wigner solid (WS) phase, where electrons arrange themselves in a periodic array. The WS is typically pinned by the residual disorder sites and manifests an insulating behavior, with nonlinear current-voltage (I-V) and noise characteristics. We report here measurements on an ultralow-disorder, dilute 2DES, confined to a GaAs quantum well. In the ν<1/5 range, superimposed on a highly insulating longitudinal resistance, the 2DES exhibits a developing fractional quantum Hall state at ν=1/7, attesting to its exceptional high quality and dominance of electron-electron interaction in the low filling regime...
