Large volumes of peripheral blood need to be processed to obtain sufficient stem cells for hematopoietic rescue after myeloablation, and more than one leukapheresis is necessary in most patients. We conceived the feasibility of harvesting sufficient numbers of hematopoietic cells from the whole blood, obtainable by venaepunctures, of patients treated with a standard dose chemotherapy regimen for high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. We evaluated the kinetics of mobilization, amount and quality of hematopoietic cells released into circulation during VACOB-B chemotherapy (which consists of a 12-week program), and G-CSF in 6 patients with aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma...

Sixteen patients with laparotomy-proved Stages I-III non-Hodgkin's lumphoma were treated with high dose extended field irradiation. All patients obtained complete remission and 75% remain continually free of disease for 22+ to 63+ months. When the extent of disease is carefully delineated by a thorough staging procedure which includes laparotomy, irradiation alone may cure a high percentage of patients.

REVIEW
J L Ziegler, I T Magrath, P Gerber, P H Levine
The association of the Epstein-Barr virus and two human malignancies, Burkitt's lumphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, is reviewed. Seroepidemiologic, virologic, and immunologic evidence is summarized, and several hypotheses regarding a possible etiologic role for the Epstein-Barr virus in these tumors are presented. With our current state of knowledge we cannot conclude that the Ipstein-Barr virus is oncogenic in man, nor can we yet ascertain the biological and clinical significance of its association with Burkitt's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma...
