To ascertain whether habitual green tea consumption is associated with sarcopenia among Japanese older adults, using the screening tool for sarcopenia (SARC-F). This cross-sectional study in Mukawa, Hokkaido, Japan, was conducted between June and September 2022 and included 364 Japanese participants older than 65 y. Habitual green tea consumption and energy intake were ascertained using a validated self-administered food frequency questionnaire. Sarcopenia was evaluated using the SARC-F. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of sarcopenia risk across participant tertiles of green tea consumption, with adjustments for age, sex, body mass index, living alone, habitual exercise, walking hours, current smoking status, current alcohol consumption status, energy intake, protein intake, vegetable intake, and fruit intake...

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition in hospitalised patients can lead to serious complications, worse patient outcomes and longer hospital stays. State-of-the-art screening methods rely on scores, which need additional manual assessments causing higher workload. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this prospective study was to validate a machine learning (ML)-based approach for an automated prediction of malnutrition in hospitalised patients. METHODS: For 159 surgical in-patients, an assessment of malnutrition by dieticians was compared to the ML-based prediction conducted in the evening of admission...

Sensory analysis and untargeted lipidomics were employed to study the impact of phospholipase B (PLB) on lipid oxidation and flavor in steamed sturgeon meat, revealing the inherent relationship between lipid oxidation and flavor regulation. The research verified that PLB effectively suppresses fat oxidation and improves the overall taste of steamed sturgeon meat. Furthermore, the PLB group identified 52 compounds, and the content of odor substances such as isoamyl alcohol and hexanal was reduced compared with other groups...

Citrus black spot ( Phyllosticta citricarpa, CBS) is an important fungal disease that causes rind blemishes and affects quality of citrus fruits. The response of citrus to CBS in terms of volatiles was evaluated using molecular sensory science approaches. Fifty and twenty-one volatiles were identified in the orange juice and essential oil samples, respectively, via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The total volatile content in the samples increased after CBS infection, especially in the severe-infection group (SEG) juice and moderate-infection group (MOG) essential oil, which reached the highest levels...

CONTEXT: Low fruit and vegetable intakes are major modifiable determinants of disease. One hundred percent juice may facilitate intake and deliver essential nutrients and bioactive compounds. However, the position of 100% juice in healthy eating guidelines remains controversial due to its lower dietary fiber and higher free-sugar contents compared with whole fruits and vegetables. OBJECTIVE: To conduct an umbrella review of systematic literature reviews with meta-analyses (MAs) to summarize the health benefits of drinking 100% fruit and/or vegetable juice...
