INTRODUCTION: The aim of this work is to identify patients at risk of limited access to healthcare through artificial intelligence using a name-ethnicity classifier (NEC) analyzing the clinical stage of cataract at diagnosis and preoperative visual acuity. METHODS: This retrospective, cross-sectional study includes patients seen in the cataract clinic of a tertiary care hospital between September 2017 and February 2020 with subsequent cataract surgery in at least one eye...

BACKGROUND: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare, progressive, neuromuscular disorder. Recent advances in treatment require an updated assessment of burden to inform reimbursement decisions. OBJECTIVES: To quantify healthcare resource utilisation (HCRU) and cost of care for patients with SMA. METHODS: Cohort study of patients with SMA identified in the Swedish National Patient Registry (2007-2018), matched to a reference cohort grouped into four SMA types (1, 2, 3, unspecified adult onset [UAO])...

INTRODUCTION: The management of type 1 diabetes, a non-preventable chronic disease, leads to a high physical and psychological burden on the individual. Digital health technology can improve a person's psychosocial self-efficacy and thereby contribute to improved diabetes self-care. The aim of this study was to explore associations between psychosocial self-efficacy and demographic-, disease specific-, well-being as well as digital health technology (DHT) related factors among adults with type 1 diabetes...

BACKGROUND: In California, all four-year public colleges have adopted 100% smoke-/tobacco-free policies (TFP) whereas community colleges (CCs), particularly rural CCs, are less likely to have tobacco-free environments. This raises concerns about health equity, particularly because smoking prevalence is higher in rural areas compared to urban. We examined policy adoption barriers and facilitators for rural California CCs with the aim of providing lessons learned to support TFP adoption by rural CCs and improve conditions for student health and well-being...

HIV disproportionately affects Black/African Americans (AA), while PrEP is under-utilized by Black/AA, women, and people who inject drugs (PWID). In San Francisco, California's National HIV Behavioral Surveillance among PWID in 2022, Black/AA women were the least likely to be tested for HIV among all groups by sex and race/ethnicity and the least likely to be aware of PrEP among women. Yet, Black/AA women were no less likely to see a healthcare provider in the last year. Data suggest that providers' failure to discuss and address HIV risk with Black/AA female PWID is a major barrier to accessing effective care and prevention...

INTRODUCTION: Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) leads to an increase in morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs. In addition to increased evidence from the latest European and American guidelines (published in 2017 and 2022, respectively), in the last two years, several important clinical experiences have added new prevention tools to be included to improve the management of VAP. BACKGROUND: Glanzmann thrombasthenia (GT) and Bernard-Soulier syndrome (BSS) patients require frequent platelet transfusions and hence have an increased risk for alloimmunization against donor Human Leukocyte Antigens (HLA) when no HLA-matching is performed. Knowing that Human Platelet Antigens (HPA) are located on the platelet glycoproteins that can be absent in these patients, preventive HPA-matching may also be considered. Uniform recommendations on this topic lack in transfusion guidelines making standard practice unclear, therefore, we aimed to provide a framework for matched platelet transfusions...

Preventing the development of high blood pressure and resulting complication requires estimating the prevalence of prehypertension/hypertension and identifying associated risk factors. Information about pre-hypertension/hypertension in Ethiopia, especially in the southern region, is scarce, and limited knowledge exists regarding the prevalence and risk factors associated with pre-hypertension/hypertension. In 2021, the Preconception Health Network Australia co-developed preconception health core indicators identified as critical to ensuring optimal maternal and child outcomes following conception. We conducted an audit of perinatal databases across each state and territory to identify whether preconception core indicator data were available. Seven health domains co-developed by the Preconception Health Network were mapped against the data collected in the perinatal databases. Indicator data were lacking across all seven health domains, with data missing for social determinants of health indicators...

In this study, we aimed to assess the home care needs of caregivers of children and adolescents with OI and the associated factors. BACKGROUND: Preterms are at risk of systemic infections as the barrier function of their immature skin is insufficient. The long period of hospitalization and the huge number of invasive procedures represent a risk factor for complications. Among the nosocomial infections of the skin, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. We report a clinical case of cellulitis and abscess in two preterm twins caused by MRSA in a tertiary level Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)...

The aim of this integrative review was to explore the effect of care bundles in the prevention of Medical Device Related Pressure Ulcers (MDRPU). An MDRPU is a wound that occurs on the skin or mucosal membranes because of pressure or pressure in combination with shear. Like other types of pressure ulcers, they will have negative consequences for patients and healthcare organisations alike. Many MDRPU's are preventable.
