BACKGROUND: The impact of implementing the Paris system (TPS) on the rate of discrepant cases in the negative for high-grade urothelial carcinoma (NHGUC) category that had a subsequent diagnosis of high-grade urothelial carcinoma (HGUC) on histology is not well studied. METHODS: We adopted TPS in May 2019. We searched discrepant cases with negative urine cytology 2017-2019 in our cyto-histo correlation database. The urine cytology and follow-up biopsy/resection were reviewed by a cytopathologist who also did Genitourinary (GU) Pathology subspecialty sign-out...

INTRODUCTION: Fibreoptic bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage (FOB-BAL) is often performed in immunocompromised and cancer patients to investigate possible infectious and non-infectious causes of clinical and radiological respiratory abnormalities. Knowledge of the incidence and distribution of non-haematolymphoid malignancies (NHLM) detected by FOB-BAL in this population is limited. METHOD: Our pathology electronic database was searched from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2018 for BAL specimens with diagnoses of "malignant" and a review of the pathology report and electronic medical record was performed...

COMPARATIVE STUDY

OBJECTIVES: Pathologist workload in the United States has traditionally been measured by relative value units (RVUs), which is often criticized for providing an inaccurate estimate of actual work. This study compares three methods for measuring workload. METHODS: Surgical pathology and cytopathology workload for 1 representative month at Stanford Health Care was assessed using three different methods: RVUs, Royal College of Pathologists (RCP) point system, and University of Washington-Seattle (UW) slide count method...

REVIEW

This is the second in a two-part review of diagnostic cytopathology in veterinary medicine. As in human medicine, cytopathology is a minimally invasive, rapid, and cost-effective diagnostic modality with broad utilization. In this second part, the diagnostic applications of cytology in respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, endocrine, ocular, and central nervous system tissues are discussed with a section describing fluid analysis in veterinary medicine. As noted in the previous manuscript, which characterized the cytology of the skin/subcutis, musculoskeletal, and lymphoid tissues, the interpretation of veterinary cytology samples must be undertaken with extensive knowledge of the breadth of animal species, including familiarity with the frequency and clinical progression of diseases, both of which can be influenced by species, breed, and husbandry conditions...
