Breakdown of chlorophyll (Chl), as studied in angiosperms, follows the pheophorbide a oxygenase/phyllobilin (PaO/PB) pathway, furnishing linear tetrapyrroles, named phyllobilins (PBs). In an investigation with fern leaves we have discovered iso-phyllobilanones (iPBs) with an intriguingly rearranged and oxidized carbon skeleton. We report here a key second group of iPBs from the fern and on their structure analysis. Previously, these additional Chl-catabolites escaped their characterization, since they exist in aqueous media as mixtures of equilibrating isomers...

We established myocardial injury models in vivo and in vitro to investigate the cardioprotective effect of gomisin D obtained from Schisandra chinensis . Gomisin D significantly inhibited isoproterenol-induced apoptosis and hypertrophy in H9C2 cells. Gomisin D decreased serum BNP, ANP, CK-MB, cTn-T levels and histopathological alterations, and inhibited myocardial hypertrophy in mice. In mechanisms research, gomisin D reversed ISO-induced accumulation of intracellular ROS and Ca2+ . Gomisin D further improved mitochondrial energy metabolism disorders by regulating the TCA cycle...

n-C4H10 and iso-C4H10 are both important petrochemical raw materials. Considering the coexistence of the isomers in the production process, it is necessary to achieve their efficient separation through an economical way. However, to obtain high-purity n-C4H10 and iso-C4H10 in one-step separation process, developing iso-C4H10-exclusion adsorbents with high n-C4H10 adsorption capacity is crucial. Herein, we report a cage-like MOF (SIFSIX-Cu-TPA) with small windows and large cavities which can selectively allow smaller n-C4H10 enter the pore and accommodate a large amount of n-C4H10 simultaneously...

BACKGROUND: Exposure to famine in the prenatal period is associated with an increased risk of metabolic disease, including obesity and type-2 diabetes. We employed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) metabolomic profiling to provide a deeper insight into the metabolic changes associated with survival of prenatal famine exposure during the Dutch Famine at the end of World War II and explore their link to disease. METHODS: NMR metabolomics data were generated from serum in 480 individuals prenatally exposed to famine (mean 58...

The Venturi flow meter offers a range of measurement options for liquids, gas, steam, and slurries in piped systems. The main criteria for assessing Venturi performance include permanent pressure loss, discharge coefficient, relative pressure loss coefficient, and measurement accuracy. However, the extended length of Venturis, relative to other flow rate measuring instruments, can present limitations in some applications. Furthermore, the manufacturing of shorter Venturis requires less material and energy. This study addresses the challenge by developing shorter Venturi meters that adhere to established performance standards...

Increasing the stem size during surgery is associated with a higher incidence of intraoperative periprosthetic fractures in cementless total hip arthroplasty with fully coated tapered wedge stems, especially in femurs of Dorr type A. If in contrast a stem is implanted and sufficient primary stability is not achieved, such preventing successful osseointegration due to increased micromotions, it may also fail, especially if the stem is undersized. Stem loosening or periprosthetic fractures due to stem subsidence can be the consequence...

Strains SG10T and SG198T were strictly anaerobic, rod-shaped and Gram-stain-negative. The two novel strains exhibited iron reduction ability, utilizing various single organic acid as the elector donor and Fe(III) as a terminal electron acceptor. Bioactive components of black pepper and turmeric ameliorate glucose metabolism and appetite regulation. The present research was designed to investigate the impact of turmeric and black pepper on blood glycemia, gastrointestinal well-being, appetite, and palatability. Acyl capping groups stabilize α-helices relative to free N-termini by providing one additional C═O i ···H i +4 -N hydrogen bond. The electronic properties of acyl capping groups might also directly modulate α-helix stability: electron-rich N-terminal acyl groups could stabilize the α-helix by strengthening both i / i + 4 hydrogen bonds and i / i + 1 n → π* interactions. This hypothesis was tested in peptides X-AKAAAAKAAAAKAAGY-NH2 , where X = different acyl groups...
