Anthocyanins with different structures have different anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Precise structural use can improve the chemopreventive effects of anthocyanins and enhance treatment outcomes because the anthocyanin structure influences its functional sites and activities. However, owing to the available variety of anthocyanins and their complex structures, the low matching of intermolecular forces between existing adsorbents and anthocyanins limits the targeted separation of anthocyanin monomers...

Polyethyleneimine (PEI) has been reported to have good potential for the adsorption of metal ions. In this work, PEI was covalently bound to NiFe2 O4 @SiO2 nanoparticles to form the new adsorbent NiFe2 O4 @SiO2 -PEI. The material allowed for magnetic separation and was characterized via powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), showing the pattern of the NiFe2 O4 core and an amorphous shell. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) showed irregular shaped particles with sizes ranging from 50 to 100 nm, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) showed high C and N contents of 36 and 39%, respectively...

Neutral nanomaterials functionalized with PEG or similar molecules have been popularly employed as nanomedicines. Compared to positive counterparts that are capable of harnessing the well-known proton sponge effect to facilitate their escape from lysosomes, it is yet unclear how neutral substances got their entry into the cytosol. In this study, by taking PEGylated, neutral Au nanospheres as an example, we systematically investigated their time-dependent translocation postuptake. Specifically, we harnessed dissipative particle dynamics simulations to uncover how nanospheres bypass lysosomal entrapment, wherein a mechanism termed as "squeezing-out" mode was discovered...

This study focused on creating a SERS composite particle specifically designed for detecting malachite green. We synthesized silver nano-dendritic structures on p-type porous silicon using an external electric field, separating them from the silicon wafer. Ultrasonic crushing yielded irregular silver nanodendrite-modified porous silicon composite particles. Upon being tested in an aqueous solution of malachite green, these composite particles demonstrated significant surface-enhanced Raman scattering effects...

Mechanistic understanding of phase transformation dynamics during battery charging and discharging is crucial toward rationally improving intercalation electrodes. Most studies focus on constant-current conditions. However, in real battery operation, such as in electric vehicles during discharge, the current is rarely constant. In this work we study current pulsing in Li X FePO4 (LFP), a model and technologically important phase-transforming electrode. A current-pulse activation effect has been observed in LFP, which decreases the overpotential by up to ∼70% after a short, high-rate pulse...

BACKGROUND: Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have found promising applications in separation fields due to their large surface area and high adsorption capacity, but the exiting COFs can not be directly used as the packing materials of on-line solid-phase extraction (SPE) coupled to HPLC and HPLC because their nano/submicron size or irregular shapes might cause ultrahigh column back pressure and low column efficiency. To synthesize the large-size spherical COFs larger than 3 μm as sorbents might be able to address these problems, however it is still a great challenge till now...

When precious nano-metals are used as environmental catalysts, it is important to tune the particle sizes and the reusability of the nano-metals for achieving their highly efficient catalytic performance at a low cost. In the present work, magnetic iron oxides (FeOx -Y) nanoparticles were pre-prepared as supports of nano-metals, where Y represented the mole percentage of Fe(III) in the total iron (Y ≥ 50 %). FeOx -Y (support), PdCl4 2- (Pd source) and NaBH4 (reducing agent) were added into the organic pollutant solution containing 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE47)...

Large-size spherical sorbents with particle size of 10-50 μm are widely applied in separation fields, however it is still a great challenge to synthesize such large-size spherical covalent organic framework (COF). In this work, a type of large-size porous 3D COF was size-controablly synthesized via a two-step strategy, in which a large-size porous 3D spherical polymer was prepared first through a Pickering emulsion polymerization using nano silica as the stabilizer, and subsequently it was converted into porous spherical 3D COF by a solvothermal method...

This work demonstrates that targeting ligand density on nanoparticles can affect interactions between the nanoconstructs and cell membrane receptors. We discovered that when the separation between covalently grafted DNA aptamers on gold nanostars was comparable to the distance between binding sites on a receptor dimer (matched density; MD), nanoconstructs exhibited a higher selectivity for binding to the dimeric form of the protein. Single-particle dynamics of MD nanoconstructs showed slower rotational rates and larger translational footprints on cancer cells expressing more dimeric forms of receptors (dimer+) compared with cells having more monomeric forms (dimer-)...

This study describes the formation, size control and penetration behavior of polymer nano dots (Pdots) consisting of single or few chain polythiophene based conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) via nanophase separation between good solvent and poor solvent of CPE. Though the chain singularity may be associated with dilution nanophase separation suggests that molecules of a good solvent create a thermodynamically driven solvation layer surrounding the CPEs and thereby separating the single chains even in their poor solvents...

Numerous innovative nanoparticle formulations of drugs and biologics, named nano-formulations, have been developed in the last two decades. However, methods for their scaled-up production are still lagging, as the amount needed for large animal tests and clinical trials is typically orders of magnitude larger. This manufacturing challenge poses a critical barrier to successfully translating various nano-formulations. This review focuses on how microfluidics technology has become a powerful tool to overcome this challenge by synthesizing various nano-formulations with improved particle properties and product purity in large quantities...

Multiple exciton physics in semiconductor nanocrystals play an important role in optoelectronic devices. This work investigates radially alloyed CdZnSe/CdS nanocrystals with suppressed Auger recombination due to the spatial separation of carriers, which also underpins their performance in optical gain and scintillation experiments. Due to suppressed Auger recombination, the biexciton lifetime is greater than 10 ns, much longer than most nanocrystals. The samples show optical gain, amplified spontaneous emission, and lasing at thresholds <2 excitons per particle...

Cells secrete extracellular vesicles (EVs) and non-vesicular extracellular (nano)particles (NVEPs or ENPs) that may play a role in intercellular communication. Tumor-derived EVs have been proposed to induce immune priming of antigen presenting cells or to be immuno-suppressive agents. We suspect that such disparate functions are due to variable compositions in EV subtypes and ENPs. We aimed to characterize the array of secreted EVs and ENPs of murine tumor cell lines. Unexpectedly, we identified virus-like particles (VLPs) from endogenous murine leukemia virus in preparations of EVs produced by many tumor cells...

The membrane-protein interface on lipid-based nanoparticles influences their in vivo behavior. Better understanding may evolve current drug delivery methods towards effective targeted nanomedicine. Previously, we demonstrated the cell-specific accumulation of a liposome formulation in vivo, through the selective recognition of lipid phase separation by triglyceride lipases. This exemplified how liposome morphology and composition can determine nanoparticle-protein interactions. Here, we investigate the lipase-induced compositional and morphological changes of phase-separated liposomes - which bear a lipid droplet in their bilayer - and unravel how lipases recognize and bind to the particles...

Over the past few years, it has become increasingly evident that microplastic pollutant heavily contaminates water sources, posing a potential threat to both human and wildlife. These plastic pollutants do not get degraded efficiently by natural processes and the existing traditional treatment methods are incapable of fully eradicating them. In this regard, degradation of microplastic contaminants through photocatalytic methods has emerged as a powerful technique. Unfortunately, only a limited number of investigations have been reported in the field of photocatalytic degradation of microplastics...

Shape-anisotropic colloids are increasingly attracting attention for the fabrication of nano- and mesostructured materials. Polymer-based prolate spheroids are typically accessible through a two-step fabrication procedure comprising the synthesis of monodisperse particles of initially spherical shape and their stretching into elongated, ellipsoidal-like objects. The particle stretching is conducted within a matrix polymer, most commonly polyvinylalcohol, which allows heating beyond the glass transition temperature of the polymer particles, e...
