BACKGROUND: Antacid treatments decrease the serum concentrations of first-generation epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), although it is unknown whether antacids affect clinical outcomes. As cerebrospinal fluid concentrations of TKIs are much lower than serum concentrations, we hypothesized that this drug-drug interaction might affect the prognosis of patients with de novo brain metastases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated 269 patients with EGFR-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who had been diagnosed between December 2010 and December 2013, and had been treated using first-line first-generation EGFR-TKIs...

BACKGROUND: Generic substitution has been permitted for several years in France and is promoted in order to reduce health expenditures. However, reluctance concerning use of generic drugs exists for different reasons: suspicions about their efficacy and/or safety, differences in content (excipients) and discussions about bioequivalency. The aim of our study was to determine whether or not the substitution ratio differs according to pharmacological classes used in primary care. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive study in the French Health Insurance Database using reimbursement data on drugs prescribed and delivered in the Midi-Pyrénées administrative district between March 2010 and March 2011...

The seventh in the series of ETP Symposia (see Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry 2012, 26, 1515-1518 for a description and report on the 6(th) Symposium) was held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Toronto, Canada, on 30 April to 1 May, 2013, and was chaired by Professor Daniel Figeys, Ottawa Institute for Systems Biology, University of Ottawa. The purpose of these symposia is to convene meetings of scientists and engineers from universities, government laboratories, industry and manufacturers of scientific instrumentation, to discuss novel technologies and methodologies applicable to research in molecular biology...

BACKGROUND: Temozolomide (TMZ) administered daily with radiation therapy (RT) for 6 weeks, followed by adjuvant TMZ for 6 cycles, is the standard therapy for newly diagnosed glioblastoma (GBM) patients. Although TMZ is considered to be a safe drug, it has been demonstrated to cause severe myelotoxicity; in particular, some case reports and small series studies have reported severe myelotoxicity developing during TMZ and concomitant RT. We performed a prospective study to analyze the incidence of early severe myelotoxicity and its possible clinical and genetic factors...

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY: Bivalirudin, a direct thrombin inhibitor, demonstrated an improvement in the prognosis of acute coronary syndromes by a decrease in major bleeding complications. This observational study evaluated inhospital outcome of patients with acute myocardial infarction treated by prehospital bivalirudin before primary angioplasty. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We included, from June 2010 to June 2012, all patients with acute myocardial infarction receiving prehospital bivalirudin with bolus of 0...

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that gastric acid suppression by antacid drugs can promote allergic reactions to acid-labile food proteins. No data are available about whether antacid drugs can promote drug hypersensitivity reactions. The most potent and longer lasting inhibition of gastric secretion is provided by proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). We hypothesized that gastric acid suppression by proton pump inhibitors could be causative of drug hypersensitivity reactions during hospitalization...

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the intestinal barrier function (IBF) state of patients with acute myocardial infarction-heart failure (AMI-HF), and to compare the therapeutic effects of rhubarb and Pantoprazole (proton pump inhibitor). METHODS: Enrolled were 107 AMI patients from ICU, Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology from May 2008 to April 2010. Of them, 47 AMI patients without HF were recruited as the control group, while 60 AMI-HF patients were randomly assigned to the rhubarb group (30 cases, treated by rhubarb + Pantoprazole) or the Pantoprazole group (30 cases, treated by Pantoprazole + routine treatment)...

Use of rifampicin (RIF) in combination with colistin (COL) has been proposed for the treatment of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii infections owing to in vitro synergism. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the molecular epidemiology and mechanisms of RIF resistance in 57 clinical isolates of A. baumannii in two tertiary care hospitals in Naples (Italy) from 2006 to 2010. Amongst the collection, 36 isolates showed high RIF minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) (256 mg/L to ≥512 mg/L), 16 showed intermediate MICs (8-16 mg/L) and 5 had low MICs (4 mg/L)...

Although many studies have been performed on carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, only a few studies have addressed carbapenem resistance in Acinetobacter spp. other than A. baumannii (non-baumannii Acinetobacter). Amongst 287 Acinetobacter spp. isolates from patients with bacteraemia in a South Korean hospital collected between 2003 and 2010, 160 (55.7%) were non-baumannii Acinetobacter spp. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed and the effect of efflux pump inhibitors was examined. Antimicrobial resistance genes were identified and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) analysis was performed...

REVIEW
György Miklós Buzás
Helicobacter pylori, discovered 27 years ago, has remained the most prevalent infectious agent in the world. In the author's hypothesis, the increase of peptic ulcer prevalence in the 19-20th century could be attributable to the extended worldwide use of gastric tubes for secretory testing which led to the iatrogenic transmission of pathogenic strains. Helicobacter pylori outer membrane proteins (OMP), and duodenal ulcer promoting (dupA) proteins were identified as novel virulence factors, leading to the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which could be future targets of therapy...
