Aesthetic gynecology has seen increasing patient and physician demand. Although this typically falls in the reign of obstetrics and gynecology, plastic surgeons and cosmetic surgeons have also developed great interest in this field. Currently, few if any obstetrics and gynecology residency or fellowship programs teach this subject matter though inroads have taken place in plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery training programs that had the foresight to include specific training in this field. Currently, many surgeons start by first training in various established certification and preceptorship programs based in the United States and the United Kingdom...

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to make a bibliometric analysis of the studies on breast reduction (BR) between the years 1980 and 2016 and identify important studies through trend topics as well as active authors, countries, universities, scientific journals, and citation and co-citation analyses about BR. BACKGROUND: Although BR looks like one of the cosmetic surgeries performed in order to restore the woman's appearance, in fact it is a reconstructive surgery that eliminates back pain, stance disorder, headache, shoulder pain, back and cervical disk hernia, difficulty in breathing, hollowness caused by bra straps, hygiene problems under breasts (e...

Cosmetic genital surgery is on the rise not only in the realm of plastic surgery but also in that of gynecology. Young women below the age of 20 (millennial adolescents) now inquire about procedures to improve the appearance of their genitalia during their annual gynecological visits. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recently released recommendations for their members to better field cosmetic questions by this subset of patients. These guidelines, albeit somewhat restrictive, acknowledge the field of aesthetic vaginal surgery as a distinct entity for gynecologists...

Twitter use by medical institutions can interactively and efficiently provide public health information and education for laypeople. OBJECTIVE: This study examined Twitter usage by medical institutions. METHODS: We reviewed all Japanese user accounts in which the names of medical institutions were described in the user's Twitter profile...

OBJECTIVE: To analyze scientific integrity (scientific quality, objectivity, credibility, and appropriate transparency) of recommendations of gynecologic societies for female genital cosmetic surgery (FGCS) and their references, which were used to support these recommendations. STUDY DESIGN: The scientific integrity of recommendations for FGCS published by gynecologic societies has never been subjected to scientific scrutiny. Electronic and manual searches for FGCS literature published in the English language were conducted and analyzed for the period of the recommendations...

BACKGROUND: Women considering female genital cosmetic surgery (FGCS) are likely to use the internet as a key source of information during the decision-making process. The aim of this systematic review was to determine what is known about the role of the internet in the promotion and normalisation of female genital cosmetic surgery and to identify areas for future research. METHODS: Eight social science, medical, and communication databases and Google Scholar were searched for peer-reviewed papers published in English...

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to review our experience with aesthetic labiaplasty and describe the type and frequency of complications that have been experienced. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed on all patients who had primary aesthetic labia minora reduction surgery from August 2007 to April 2014...

PURPOSE: We sought, first, to evaluate the operative experience of surgeons who have completed postresidency fellowships offered by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS), and second, to compare this cosmetic surgery training to other surgical residency and fellowship programs in the United States. Finally, we suggest how new and existing oral and maxillofacial surgeons can use these programs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the completed case logs from AACS-accredited fellowships...

BACKGROUND: Practitioners who are not board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery are practicing cosmetic surgery. The extent of this issue across the United States has yet to be examined in detail. METHODS: A systematic search using Google was performed to evaluate the qualifications of clinicians marketing themselves as plastic surgeons. For every U.S. state, the following searches were performed: [state] plastic surgery, [state] cosmetic surgery, and [state] aesthetic surgery...

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Accurate and comprehensive measurements of the external genitalia in female adults are of great significance in surgery designs and for aesthetic evaluation in genital plastic surgeries. The authors carried out a 319-case study and provided baseline data and morphometric reference for plastic surgery involving the genital deformity caused by trauma or burns and male-to-female transsexual operations. METHODS: Our study design recruited 319 women referred to the out-patient clinic from August 2010 to August 2013...

As patients are diagnosed with a health condition that requires a hysterectomy, surgical recommendations are generally discussed. Surgical options for a variety of procedures have expanded greatly in the past decade because of the development of innovations including, but not limited to, robots, advanced bipolar energy systems, HD cameras, single-site access systems, minilaparoscopic instruments, and novel uterine manipulators. These advances allow the surgeon to consider an expanded variety of procedures that may not only improve patient outcomes but also accommodate patient preferences...

METHODS: Target methodological analyses of pertinent evidence-based scientific papers and anecdotal information linked to surgical techniques for cosmetic-plastic female external genitalia were examined. A search of the existing literature from 1900 through June 2011 was performed by utilizing electronic and manual databases...

Cosmetic genitoplasty interventions, and especially reduction nymphoplasties, now seem to attract more and more patients, mainly among the younger who are more influenced by widely publicized pornographic than by anatomic reality they hardly suspect. However, they must be informed and warned against the trivialization of a still young surgery, insufficiently justified validated and supervised, especially on the psychological level, and with many unresolved ethical issues.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of tunneled lotus petal flap in terms of anatomical and cosmetic results in patients who underwent vulvoperineal reconstruction for vulvar malignancy. METHODS: Between March 2010 and July 2011, 22 women underwent vulvoperineal reconstruction using tunneled lotus petal flap for primary or recurrent disease at San Gerardo Hospital, Monza. In 16 cases, lotus flaps were bilateral, whereas in 6 cases, they were monolateral. RESULTS: The median age was 72 years (range, 53-87 years)...

There is a wide variety in the appearance of normal female external genitalia. Nevertheless a specific prototype is promoted by the media, leading to a false sense that all other appearances are abnormal. As adolescents become sexually aware at an earlier age, most of them are worried about the appearance of their genitalia, especially when labia minora protrude beyond labia majora. This is a prospective audit of adolescents presenting for assessment of their perceived abnormal genitalia. Sixteen girls aged 10...

BACKGROUND: Combined surgery is an attractive option for both patients and surgeons. Unfortunately, it remains unclear to patients whether plastic surgery can be combined safely and efficaciously with other surgeries, particularly gynecologic surgery. The goal of this study was to determine the safety and efficacy of combined abdominoplasty and gynecologic surgery. METHODS: A case-control study of 25 patients undergoing combined abdominoplasty and intra-abdominal gynecologic surgery was performed...

Overzealous resection of the labia minorum is a significant complication of labioplasty. Knowledge and understanding of reconstructive plastic surgical principles are required to manage such challenging complications. We report a case of iatrogenic labial asymmetry that was reconstructed with a cross-labial flap.
