Radiation is utilized in the therapy of more than 50% of cancer patients. Unfortunately, many malignancies become resistant to radiation over time. We investigated the hypothesis that one method of a cancer cell's ability to survive radiation occurs through cellular communication via exosomes. Exosomes are cell-derived vesicles containing DNA, RNA, and protein. Three properties were analyzed: 1) exosome function, 2) exosome profile and 3) exosome uptake/blockade. To analyze exosome function, we show radiation-derived exosomes increased proliferation and enabled recipient cancer cells to survive radiation in vitro ...

Despite the prevalence of physical exertion and fatigue during military, firefighting and disaster medicine operations, sports or even daily life, their acute effects on moral reasoning and moral decision-making have never been systematically investigated. To test the effects of physical exertion on moral reasoning and moral decision-making, we administered a moral dilemma task to 32 male participants during a moderate or high intensity cycling intervention. Participants in the high intensity cycling group tended to show more non-utilitarian reasoning and more non-utilitarian decision-making on impersonal but not on personal dilemmas than participants in the moderate intensity cycling group...

In order to successfully address social determinants of health and to achieve social justice for kanaka and all the people of Hawai'i, we must broaden our understanding of and approach to healing/health through interdisciplinary, culturally-informed education. Strengthening cultural competence within an Interprofessional Education framework, has potential in meeting important challenges in patient and population health, including meeting the increased demand for culturally trained professionals, increasing access to providers, and reducing health inequities in kanaka (Native Hawaiians)...

BACKGROUND: The aim was to evaluate the prognoses and clinicopathological characteristics of solitary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) originating from the caudate lobe (HCC-CL). METHODS: We analyzed 584 patients with a solitary tumor <10 cm from January 1990 to November 2014. Patients were classified into a caudate lobe group (CL; n = 39) and a non-caudate lobe group (NCL; n = 545). We investigated the prognoses and clinicopathological characteristics of solitary HCC-CL...

OBJECTIVES: Apolipoprotein A-1 (ApoA-1) is involved in regulating both lipid and energy metabolism, which may play important roles in liver regeneration, especially for the liver with steatosis. We here intended to investigate the role of ApoA-1 in regeneration of small-for-size fatty liver graft and to explore the underlying mechanism. METHODS: The association of ApoA-1 expression with liver regeneration was studied in rat liver transplantation models using small-for-size normal graft or small-for-size fatty graft...

BACKGROUND: Portal vein embolization has been used worldwide to induce hypertrophy of the future liver remnant and to reduce the risk of hepatic insufficiency and death after major hepatectomy. However, whether disease progression after portal vein embolization can affect long-term oncologic outcomes in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma is uncertain. METHODS: From a total of 107 patients who underwent portal vein embolization and subsequent hepatectomy between 2000 and 2016, 57 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma were enrolled...

All hepatitis E virus (HEV) variants reported to infect humans belong to the species Orthohepevirus A (HEV-A). The zoonotic potential of the species Orthohepevirus C (HEV-C), which circulates in rats and is highly divergent from HEV-A, is unknown. We report a liver transplant recipient with hepatitis caused by HEV-C infection. We detected HEV-C RNA in multiple clinical samples and HEV-C antigen in the liver. The complete genome of the HEV-C isolate had 93.7% nt similarity to an HEV-C strain from Vietnam. The patient had preexisting HEV antibodies, which were not protective against HEV-C infection...

BACKGROUND: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease worldwide. Previous studies demonstrated safety and efficacy of autologous bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (ABM-MNCs) in induced type-1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) rats. However, the effect of ABM-MNCs on urinary markers of DN in humans is not well studied. We evaluated the therapeutic effect of ABM-MNCs on the urinary markers microalbuminuria (MAU), urinary type-IV collagen and urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (uNGAL) in T1DM patients with and without nephropathy...

Existing methods to improve detection of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) have focused on genomic alterations but have rarely considered the biological properties of plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA). We hypothesized that differences in fragment lengths of circulating DNA could be exploited to enhance sensitivity for detecting the presence of ctDNA and for noninvasive genomic analysis of cancer. We surveyed ctDNA fragment sizes in 344 plasma samples from 200 patients with cancer using low-pass whole-genome sequencing (0...

BACKGROUND: Early implant placement combined with simultaneous contour augmentation was able to rebuild stable facial hard-tissue and soft-tissue contours that were esthetically pleasing. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical esthetic outcome, when two different bone grafting materials were used. METHODS: Forty-eight patients were randomly assigned into two groups. In the control group, autogenous bone was used to cover the exposed implant surface then a layer of deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) was added...

Detailed assessment of hydrochar wetting properties, which could provide an essential understanding of underlying mechanisms during its application to soils, is lacking. We characterized hydrochar produced from hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) performed on poultry litter at various temperatures and for different times in terms of hydrophobicity and surface free energy properties. Hydrochar was more hydrophobic than untreated poultry litter, and its hydrophobicity increased with increasing HTC temperature (contact angle > 130°)...

Arginine methylation is a post-translational modification that plays pivotal roles in signal transduction and gene transcription during cell fate determination. We found protein methyltransferase 6 (PRMT6) to be frequently downregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its expression to negatively correlate with aggressive cancer features in HCC patients. Silencing of PRMT6 promoted the tumor-initiating, metastasis, and therapy resistance potential of HCC cell lines and patient-derived organoids. Consistently, loss of PRMT6 expression aggravated liver tumorigenesis in a chemical-induced HCC PRMT6 knockout (PRMT6-/- ) mouse model...

BACKGROUND: To study the association between kidney injury biomarkers and urinary OH-PAH metabolites in kitchen workers, with microalbuminuria. METHODS: A cross-sectional pilot study was conducted among 120 male kitchen workers in a mega kitchen located at Coimbatore, India. Personal and sub-clinical details of study subjects were collected using a questionnaire. Albumin, creatinine, and albumin-creatinine ratio (ACR) were measured using urine dipstick test for the determination of microalbuminuria...

Specific physiological responses and their relationship were analyzed in 12 recreational endurance athletes (43.8 ± 7.9 years) during a period of intensified cycling training. Heart rate (HR), HR variability (HRV), serum creatine kinase (S-CK) and haematocrit (Hct) were measured in the mornings before (PRE) and following three consecutive days of intensified training (POST 1-3). Morning HR increased during this period (PRE: 52.2 ± 6.7 bpm, POST 1: 58.8 ± 7.0 bpm, POST 2: 58.5 ± 8.1 bpm, POST 3: 57.9 ± 7...
