Dexamethasone acetate (DXMa) has proven its efficiency to treat corneal inflammation, without a great propensity to increase intraocular pressure. Unfortunately, its poor aqueous solubility, associated with a rapid precorneal elimination, results in a low drug bioavailability and a low penetration after topical ocular administration. The main objective of this study was to improve the apparent aqueous solubility of DXMa using cyclodextrins. First, hydroxypropyl-β-CD (HPβCD) and hydroxypropyl-γ-CD (HPγCD) were used to enhance DXMa concentration in aqueous solution...

A novel drug carrier is constructed by compositing hydrophilic hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrins (HP-β-CD) and carboxylated graphene nanomaterial (GO-COOH). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirms that the two materials are successfully combined via chemical bonds. Further, a crosslinking agent of glutaraldehyde is applied to fabricate composite GO-COO-HP-β-CD nanospheres, as demonstrated by an atomic force microscope. Dexamethasone (DEX) is selected as the model drug, and the drug loading efficiency and water solubility of the nanospheres greatly increased...

Remote loading technology is an outstanding achievement in liposome-based drug delivery systems. Compared with conventional passive loading, remote loading technology exhibits unique superiority in terms of high drug loading efficiency, low leakage rate and adequate drug accumulation. In the intra-liposome aqueous phase, the counterion of the trapping agent can control the state of aggregation/crystallization of the drug-counterion salt, and thereby contribute to control the efficiency of remote loading. Herein, irinotecan (CPT-11)-loaded liposomes were developed using three trapping agents: ammonium sulfate (AS), sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD) and sucrose octasulfate (SOS)...

The inclusion compound (IC) of cyclodextrin (CD) containing the antitumor drug Methotrexate (MTX) as a guest molecule was obtained to increase the solubility of MTX and decrease its inherent toxic effects in nonspecific cells. The IC was conjugated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), obtained by a chemical method, creating a ternary intelligent delivery system for MTX molecules, based on the plasmonic properties of the AuNPs. Irradiation of the ternary system, with a laser wavelength tunable with the corresponding surface plasmon of AuNPs, causes local energy dissipation, producing the controlled release of the guest from CD cavities...

β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) is a nontoxic cyclic oligosachcharide that can encapsulate all or part of organic molecules of appropriate size and specific shape through noncovalent interaction. Herein, we report the influence of β-CD complex formation of an antipyrine derivative on its metal ion sensing behavior. In aqueous solution, the antipyrine shows a turn-on fluorescence sensing of vanadyl ion, and in cyclodextrin medium it senses aluminum ion. The compound shows an unusual fluorescence quenching on binding with β-cyclodextrin (log KSV = 2...

Palm curtain was selected as carrier to immobilize Bacillus circulans ATCC 21783 to produce β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). The influence for immobilization to CGTase activity was analyzed to determine the operation stability. 83.5% cyclodextrin glycosyltransferases (CGTase) of the 1st cycle could be produced in the 7th cycle for immobilized cells, while only 28.90% CGTase was produced with free cells. When palm curtain immobilized cells were reused at the 2th cycle, enzyme activities were increased from 5003 to 5132 U/mL, which was mainly due to physical adsorption of cells on palm curtain with special concave surface structure...

Ascribing to their significant differences in physicochemical properties, it is extremely challenging to treat complex wastewater containing more than one class of pollutants via one-step treatment. Here, we focused on disposal of complex wastewater bearing organic dye and heavy metal by using adsorptive method. Thus, by combining the advantages of polyethyleneimine (PEI), β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as well as Fe3 O4 magnetic nanoparticles, a versatile β-CD and PEI bi-functionalized magnetic nanoadsorbent (Fe3 O4 -PEI/β-CD) with spatially separated sorption sites was successfully constructed for simultaneous capture of methyl orange (MO) and Pb(II) in complex wastewater...

The influence of cyclodextrins (CDs) on the rheological and structural properties of κ-carrageenan (κ-CA) gel was investigated. Gelling temperature (Tg ) of κ-CA was improved by CDs present in the system. Variation of the Herschel-Bulkley model parameters indicates that the addition of CDs increases plasticity of the κ-CA sol. Scanning electronic micrographs show that networks of κ-CA become flat and firm after CDs were added. κ-CA gel containing methyl-β-CD shows the most uniform and fine network structure...
