AIM: The purpose of this retrospective observational study was to investigate the anatomical characteristics of the vertebral artery in pediatric patients using computed tomography images. METHODS: We evaluated anatomical characteristics of the right and left vertebral artery at the cricoid level and at a lower level, which was mid-level between the cricoid cartilage and the origin of vertebral artery from the subclavian artery. At each level, the cross-sectional areas of the vertebral artery and internal jugular vein, the relative size of vertebral artery to internal jugular vein, the minimum distance between them, and the extent of overlap between them were investigated...

BACKGROUND: The leading cause of surgical pneumoperitoneum is hollow viscus perforation, which accounts for approximately 90% of cases. A nonsurgical etiology may account for up to about 10% of the causes of pneumoperitoneum. However, a pneumoperitoneum often poses significant management dilemmas for surgeons, especially when signs of peritonitis are absent or when the cause is unknown prior to laparotomy. We present the first case of pneumoperitoneum due to inguinal laceration without viscus perforation after a traffic accident...

This study aimed to evaluate the association of ascending aortic diameter (AAD) measured by low-dose chest CT (LDCT) and metabolic syndrome (MS) in Korean men. AAD was measured with LDCT in 1046 healthy Korean men (mean age 50.7±9.7 years, range 28 to 69 years) participating in medical health check-up in a university health promotion center. AAD was defined as the longest length measured from the left main coronary ostium to the level of the right pulmonary artery in the axial plane in LDCT. The association between AAD and MS was examined using logistic regression...

PURPOSE: Dosimetric studies have suggested greater cardiopulmonary sparing with protons over photons for left-sided postmastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT). Modern techniques such as deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) can help spare the heart. This analysis compares photon and proton delivery with and without DIBH. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Ten women with left breast cancer referred for PMRT on a prospective clinical trial with unfavorable cardiac anatomy underwent free breathing (FB) and DIBH computed tomography simulation...

We are reporting a case of missed blunt traumatic aortic injury (BTAI). A 28 year male presented with chest pain following a motor vehicle accident. He was discharged following normal clinical signs and chest radiograph. The following day he complained of lower limb weakness. Traumatic aortic dissection was revealed via computer tomography (CT) of the thorax. BTAI cannot be ruled out with normal clinical signs and chest radiograph alone. CT thorax is mandatory to rule out BTAI in high impact chest injury.

Automatic detection of pulmonary nodules in thoracic computed tomography (CT) scans has been an active area of research for the last two decades. However, there have only been few studies that provide a comparative performance evaluation of different systems on a common database. We have therefore set up the LUNA16 challenge, an objective evaluation framework for automatic nodule detection algorithms using the largest publicly available reference database of chest CT scans, the LIDC-IDRI data set. In LUNA16, participants develop their algorithm and upload their predictions on 888 CT scans in one of the two tracks: 1) the complete nodule detection track where a complete CAD system should be developed, or 2) the false positive reduction track where a provided set of nodule candidates should be classified...

Solitary splenic metastasis is extremely rare, with only 27 reported cases in the literature. An 81-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for treatment of pulmonary and splenic lesions. Chest computed tomography showed a small lung nodule in the right upper lobe, abdominal computed tomography showed an 8 cm splenic mass with abnormal accumulation, and positron emission tomography revealed a maximum standardized uptake value of 7.9. She had elevated serum cancer antigen 19-9 (1847 U/mL) and carcinoembryonic antigen concentrations (17...

CLINICAL ISSUE: The incidence of malignant melanoma is continuously increasing. The prognosis of metastatic disease is still limited. STANDARD TREATMENT: Until a few years ago palliative chemotherapy with a limited response rate was the standard treatment for metastatic melanoma. TREATMENT INNOVATIONS: Immunotherapy and targeted therapy provide new treatment options. Immune checkpoint inhibitors have significantly improved the prognosis. DIAGNOSTIC WORK-UP: Regional lymph node sonography, computed tomography (CT) of the neck, chest and abdomen and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are routinely used...

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP; extrinsic allergic alveolitis) is a rare non-immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated inflammatory lung disease caused by inhalation exposure (occupational, recreational or ordinary home exposure). A 36-year-old female patient, without significant medical history, is referred to an outpatient pulmonology clinic for dry cough, shortness of breath, fever, fatigue and weight loss. Chest high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) was performed, and significant lung fibrosis (especially centrilobular and interlobular in bilateral "thick lines"), traction bronchiectasis and alveolitis in both superior lobes are described...

OBJECTIVE: Preablative stimulated thyroglobulin (ps-Tg) has the potential to be used in identifying distant metastatic differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DM-DTC), but its single level can be affected by remnant thyroid tissue and thyrotropin (TSH). The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate the value of serial ps-Tg measurements in identifying DM-DTC specifically. METHODS: A total of 317 DTC patients with serial measurements of ps-Tg, TSH and anti-Tg antibody were divided into M1 (n=72) and M0 (n=245) according to the presence of distant metastasis (DM) or not...

BACKGROUND: Most patients with restriction have a PFT pattern in which TLC, FVC and FEV1 are reduced to a similar degree. We call this pattern 'simple' restriction (SR). In contrast, we commonly observe a pattern in which FVC percent predicted (pp) is disproportionately reduced relative to TLCpp. We term this pattern 'complex restriction' (CR) and attempted to characterize its clinical, radiologic and physiologic features. METHODS: We reviewed PFTs of patients tested between November 2009 and June 2013 who had restriction (TLC<LLN)...

Modalities to detect and characterize lung cancer are generally divided into those that are invasive [endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), esophageal ultrasound (EUS), and electromagnetic navigational bronchoscopy (ENMB)] versus noninvasive [chest radiography (CXR), computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)]. This chapter describes these modalities, the literature supporting their use, and delineates what tests to use to best evaluate the patient with lung cancer...

Rapid technological advances in computed tomography (CT) have allowed CT coronary angiography (CTCA) to be delivered at low radiation dose and high diagnostic accuracy. Due to its high negative predictive value for coronary artery disease, it has become a gatekeeper for the assessment of patients with chest pain of recent onset. Second line functional assessment of a detected coronary stenosis relies mostly on other imaging modalities. Functional assessment of coronary artery disease by CT is therefore an attractive addition to CTCA...

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia is the most common form of infantile chronic lung disease and results in significant health-care expenditure. The roles of chest radiography and computed tomography (CT) are well documented but numerous recent advances in imaging technology have paved the way for newer imaging techniques including structural pulmonary assessment via lung magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional assessment via ventilation, and perfusion MRI and quantitative imaging techniques using both CT and MRI...
