BACKGROUND AND AIMS: A histopathological hallmark of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the presence of ground glass hepatocytes (GGHs). GGHs are liver cells that exhibit eosinophilic, granular, glassy cytoplasm in light microscopy and are characterized by accumulation of HBV surface (HBs) proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). More important, GGHs have been accepted as a precursor of HCC and may represent preneoplastic lesions of the liver. METHODS: Here we show that the reason for ground glass phenotype of hepatocytes in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and in HBs transgenic mice is a complex formation between HBs proteins and lipid droplets (LDs) within the ER...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the liver pathological characteristics and the clearance rate of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) with antiviral treatment for 1 to 7 years old children with heptitis B e antigen(HBeAg)-negative chronic hepatitis B. METHOD: A total of 49 cases with HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B were treated with interferon (IFN) or IFN treatment for 6 months added with lamivudine, and were followed up for at least 6 months.Retrospective analysis was performed on the liver pathological characteristics, the efficacy of antivirus treatment and its influencing factors of the HBsAg clearance rate in the cases from June 2006 to December 2013 in the 302 Hospital of People's Liberation Army...

BACKGROUND/AIM: Hepatitis C is an important sociomedical problem worldwide due to frequent progression to chronic disease, occurrence of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Standard pegylated interferon alfa 2a plus ribavirin therapy results in resolution of infection only in 50% of patients. The aim of this study was to determine the association of various factors with response to the therapy in patients with chronic heptitis C virus (HCV) infection. Age and sex of patients, inoculation risk factors, histopathological changes in the liver, viral load and HCV genotype were analyzed...
