PURPOSE: Biliary atresia (BA) is characterized by progressive inflammation of the biliary system. This inflammation persists and causes liver fibrosis, although jaundice disappears after Kasai portoenterostomy (KP). We aimed to confirm whether the oral administration of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) suppresses liver fibrosis in postoperative patients with BA. METHODS: We reviewed patients who underwent laparoscopic KP (lapKP) between January 2014 and September 2017...

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been investigated to treat liver diseases, but the efficiency of MSCs to treat chronic liver diseases is conflicting. FGF21 can reduce inflammation and fibrosis. We established FGF21-secreting adipose derived stem cells (FGF21_ADSCs) to enhance the effects of ADSCs and transplanted them into thioacetamide (TAA)-induced liver fibrosis mice via the tail vein. Transplantation of FGF21_ADSCs significantly improved liver fibrosis by decreasing serum hyaluronic acid and reducing the expression of fibrosis-related factors such as α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), collagen and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) compared with the Empty_ADSCs by inhibition of p-JNK, NF-κB and p-Smad2/3 signalling...

BACKGROUND: Hepatic fibrosis is the most important factor for estimating the prognosis of patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). A novel non-invasive scoring system, the FM-fibro index, showed high accuracy in a pilot study. The purpose of this study was to validate the efficacy of the FM-fibro index in a multi-center cohort. METHODS: Among 18 institutions, we analyzed 400 Japanese patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD. We evaluated the accuracies of the FM-fibro index, CA-index, and ELF panel by area under the receiver operator characteristics curves (AUROC)...

Liver fibrosis remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality with a complicated etiology and notorious complications, but there is a lack of efficacious therapeutics. Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) has a central role in the course of liver fibrosis, and thus, prevention of the development of EMT may control and even reverse liver fibrosis. This study aimed to examine the beneficial effect of ginsenoside Rg1, a phrenological active component isolated from Ginseng, and interrogate the mechanism in vitro and in vivo, with a focus on transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β)/Smad and Nrf2-mediated signaling pathways...

BACKGROUND: A foreign body reaction (FBR) is a typical tissue response to a biomaterial that has been injected or implanted in human body tissue. There has been a lack of data on the classification of foreign body reaction to silicone injection, which can describe the pattern of body tissue responses to silicone. OBJECTIVE: Determine the foreign body reaction to silicone injection. METHOD: We modified the classification proposed by Duranti and colleagues, which has categorized a FBR to hyaluronic acid injection into a new classification of an FBR to silicone injection...

BACKGROUND: People with HIV are at for metabolic syndrome (MetS) and fatty liver disease, but the role of Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is poorly understood. MetS and fatty liver disease been associated with changes in adiponectin, soluble ST2 (sST2), chitinase 3-like 1 (Chi3L1), hyaluronic acid (HA), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1), lysyl oxidase-like-2 (LOXL2) and transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) concentrations in HIV-uninfected populations. Protease (PI) and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTI) may contribute to these comorbidities, but the effects of switching from PI- or NNRTI to raltegravir (RAL) on these biomarkers is unknown...
