Two damage regimes-"brittle" and "ductile"-have been identified in the literature on ceramic grinding, machining, grit blasting, and wear. In the brittle regime, the damage mechanism is essentially crack formation, while in the ductile region, it is quasiplasticity. Onset of the brittle mode poses the greater threat to strength, so it becomes important to understand the mechanics of ductile-brittle thresholds in these materials. Controlled microcontact tests with a sharp indenter are employed to establish such thresholds for a suite of contemporary computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing dental ceramics...

Noma, a debilitating and destructive orofacial gangrene, remains endemic in the poor countries of sub-Saharan Africa and other noma hotbeds across the globe, mainly in countries characterized as underdeveloped economies with significant impoverished populations. Noma mostly affects children and infants. This is in spite of the universally held notion that noma is a preventable disease. Indeed, the current noma status quo has been cast as a human rights shortfall, since this devasting disease overwhelmingly affects children from poor countries...

OBJECTIVE: In Norway, supply of dental services exceeds demand, mainly because of the marked improvement in dental health during the last few decades. The aim of the study was to investigate whether private dental practitioners counteract a fall in demand for their services by providing more services or by raising their fees. METHODS: The data were collected using a questionnaire that was sent to all private dental practitioners in Norway. Altogether 1237 practitioners responded, which gave a response rate of 56%...

AIMS: The negative impact of oral diseases on the function, economy, and general health of the population is well-documented. In the last decades, evidence linking increased expression of depression and oral diseases/conditions has significantly increased. The aim of this study is to assess the association between oral disease/conditions and self-reported symptoms of depression individuals. METHODS: A specially designed questionnaire was distributed via social media for 1 week...

OBJECTIVES: To quantify (by number and mass) single use plastic waste generated from the provision of oral healthcare in primary and secondary care clinical dental settings in the UK. METHODS: An observational study of four dental practices and the clinics of a UK undergraduate dental teaching hospital was conducted. A range of routine common procedures were observed by trained and calibrated observers; these were: Examinations, endodontics, periodontics, direct placement restorations, fixed and removable prosthodontics and oral surgery...

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic greatly affected human well-being, social behavior, global economy, and healthcare systems. Everyday clinical practice in dentistry has been adjusted to the increased hazards of aerosol production by routine dental procedures. The objective of this study was to assess the existing literature to determine possible mechanisms of a relationship between COVID-19 and periodontitis, as well as describe findings from relevant epidemiological studies.Scarce data exist in the literature that directly addresses the relationship between the two diseases...

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Implant overdentures have been widely used as a treatment option for edentulous patients. However, the development of implants, aside from commercial growth, requires funding assistance to determine scientific reliability and clinical applications. Nonetheless, bibliometric studies in the implant overdenture field are lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this bibliometric analysis was to evaluate the prevalence of funding and its bibliometric associated parameters according to the financial assistance granted and the implant overdenture documentation over time...

In this review, life cycle assessment (LCA) principles are coupled with circular economy (CE) in order to address LCA examples in the biomedical sector worldwide. The objectives were (1) to explore the application of LCA in the medical, pharmaceutical, and dental fields; (2) to describe the ways of biomedical waste management; (3) to emphasize on the problem of dental waste in private and public dental sectors; and (4) to propose ways of "green circulation" of the dental waste. A literature search was performed using the Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus search engines covering the period from January 2000 until May 2020, corresponding to articles investigating the LCA and circular economy principles and legislation for biomedical and dental waste, their management options, and modern ways of recycling...

An increasing interest in a healthy lifestyle raises questions about optimal body weight. Evidently, it should be clearly discriminated between the standardised "normal" body weight and individually optimal weight. To this end, the basic principle of personalised medicine "one size does not fit all" has to be applied. Contextually, "normal" but e.g. borderline body mass index might be optimal for one person but apparently suboptimal for another one strongly depending on the individual genetic predisposition, geographic origin, cultural and nutritional habits and relevant lifestyle parameters-all included into comprehensive individual patient profile...

The shock to the economy could lead to a deterioration of physical health outcomes, including dental health. The present study investigated the association between worsened socioeconomic conditions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and dental pain in Japan. The mediating effects of psychological distress and oral health-related behaviors were also evaluated. Cross-sectional data from the Japan COVID-19 and Society Internet Survey conducted from August to September 2020 ( n = 25,482; age range, 15-79 y) were analyzed...

Neoliberalism is the dominant ideology underpinning the operation of many governments. Its tenets include policies of economic liberalization such as privatization, deregulation, free trade and reduced public expenditures on infrastructure and social services. Champions of neoliberalism claim that expansion of global trade has rescued millions from abject poverty and that direct foreign investment successfully transfers technology to developing economies. However, critics have urged governments to pay greater attention to how neoliberalism shapes population health...

The coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has and continues to create a huge number of challenges to the global economy and its associated healthcare systems, including dentistry. In the early stages, we have had to rely on mathematical modelling and plans developed from previous healthcare emergencies. As the emergency develops, it is vitally important that policymakers understand the difference between the science and the real-world evidence so that policy can adapt rapidly to the changing environment. Effective management of future crises will require open channels of communication across the whole profession, not only to collect, clean, curate and evaluate data but also to assess the benefits and harms of any policy change...

This number will decrease in 2020 owing to the coronavirus disease-19 pandemic. The edentulous patient has a decreased quality of life. Prosthodontic rehabilitation/reconstruction of edentulism improves overall quality of life. Brexit will impact many sectors of the economy, including the dental sector. Methods and analysis This policy analysis evaluates UK and EU legislation and planning documents, as well as the published literature, to analyse the impact of two scenarios relating to the UK's exit from the EU on the dental sector: a free trade agreement based on the jointly agreed Political Declaration (the 'FTA') and a 'no-deal' scenario. Conclusion An FTA could cause price increases of medicines and medical devices, and cause some disruption to the ability of regulating authorities in this area, while a no-deal would additionally risk shortages of medicines and medical devices as well as more dramatic price increases...
