Diagnostic imaging is essential in modern trauma care for initial evaluation and identifying injuries requiring intervention. Deep learning (DL) has become mainstream in medical image analysis and has shown promising efficacy for classification, segmentation, and lesion detection. This narrative review provides the fundamental concepts for developing DL algorithms in trauma imaging and presents an overview of current progress in each modality. DL has been applied to detect free fluid on Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST), traumatic findings on chest and pelvic X-rays, and computed tomography (CT) scans, identify intracranial hemorrhage on head CT, detect vertebral fractures, and identify injuries to organs like the spleen, liver, and lungs on abdominal and chest CT...

PURPOSE: This study aims to develop a predictive nomogram model to assist physicians in making evidence-based decisions and potentially reduce the incidence of deep venous thrombosis (DVT). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study, including patients admitted to the hospital from January 2014 to January 2022 with a closed, single pelvic or acetabular fracture. Comprehensive data were collected for each patient, encompassing demographics, injury characteristics, comorbidities, and results from laboratory tests and lower extremity ultrasounds...

Vesico-acetabular fistula formation is a rare condition typically associated with total hip arthroplasty. Clinical features can include pain of the hip and flank, haematuria, and dysuria. We report the case of a 67-year-old female with a past medical history of bilateral pelvic fractures and calcium hydroxyapatite deposition disease of the hip joint, who developed vesico-acetabular fistula in the absence of surgery. This was then complicated by septic arthritis. We highlight the ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of the case and review the previous case reports describing the vesico-acetabular fistula...

PURPOSE: The Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) is a tool to rapidly detect intraabdominal and intrapericardial fluid with point-of-care ultrasound. Previous studies have questioned the role of FAST in patients with pelvic fractures. The aim of the present study was to assess the accuracy of FAST to detect clinically significant intraabdominal hemorrhage in patients with pelvic fractures. METHODS: We included all consecutive patients with pelvic and/or acetabular fractures treated our Level 1 trauma center from 2009-2020...

BACKGROUND: The current rise in elderly patients with compromised bone quality complicates the surgical treatment of acetabular T-type fractures (AO type 62B2 fractures). There is on ongoing discussion about the treatment options, mostly consisting of an open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with or without primary or secondary THA. Yet, these patients are oftentimes unable to fulfill weight-bearing restrictions and mostly present with an unavailability of a stable anchor site. Consequently, this study investigates the feasibility of a cementless hip revision cup for acetabular t-type fractures and compares its biomechanical properties to ORIF...

INTRODUCTION AND RELEVANCE: Microsurgical revascularization stands as the preferred method for addressing erectile dysfunction (ED) resulting from traumatic penile arterial insufficiency. Traditional microarterial bypass surgery (MABS) techniques have typically relied on utilizing the inferior epigastric artery (IEA) as the graft vessel. However, issues such as endothelial dysfunction in the vessel and alterations in abdominal tissue can negatively impact surgical outcomes. MABS using the descending branch of the lateral circumflex artery of the femur (DLCFA) should be proposed as a surgical option for penile arterial revascularization...

Ischial tuberosity (IT) avulsion fractures are an uncommon cause of injuries in athletes. In this case, a 26-year-old female suffering from posterior right hip pain for over a decade presented with debility and a decrease in athletic function. Notable history included a hamstring strain while sprinting in elementary school. Clinical examination suggested hamstring tendinopathy and ischiofemoral impingement (IFI). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a chronic, fragmented, IT apophyseal avulsion fracture with ischial bursitis and edema within the fragmented bone, suggesting the development of heterotopic ossification (HO)...

Testicular dislocation in the abdomen after scrotal trauma is a rare and sometimes unrecognised event.Early detection and timely management reduce possible complications which include the risk of fertility loss, endocrine dysfunction, and future malignancy. We present the case of a man who suffered a traumatic dislocation of the right testis in the abdomen after a motorcycle crash. The large scrotal haematoma did not permit adequate physical examination. Furthermore, during the clinical management of the polytrauma, the main focus was on active arterial bleeding, multiple pelvic fractures and clinical investigation of the integrity of the lower urinary tract...

Avulsion injuries of the pelvis are common sports-related findings in skeletally immature adolescent patients. They usually present as an avulsion of the unfused apophysis, resulting from forced muscular contraction during typical athletic movements or from chronic traction injuries. Acute apophyseal avulsion injuries are usually easily detected with radiography. Occasionally, advanced imaging such as ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging is required in order to detect or fully assess the extent of injury...

Testicular rupture is a surgical emergency necessitating prompt diagnosis and intervention to prevent irreversible damage. Blunt trauma, including motorcycle collisions, is a common cause of testicular rupture. In the case of multi-trauma, the diagnosis of testicular rupture may be missed in the rush to surgical intervention of more grossly obvious injuries. We present a case of a 24-year-old male who suffered a motorcycle accident and subsequently presented with diffuse abdominal and hip pain. Physical exam and imaging at the emergency department showed multiple pelvic bone fractures, along with a small scrotal injury which was triaged below his pelvic injuries...

Paraplegic patients have always been ideal candidates for physiotherapy due to their body's inability to recover on its own. Regardless of the cause that led to the onset of paraplegia (traumatic or degenerative), physiotherapy helps these patients with devices and methods designed to restore the proper functioning of their motility, as well as their quality of life. A total of 60 paraplegic dogs without deep pain in the hindlimbs caused by intervertebral disc extrusion or thoracolumbar fractures underwent physiotherapy sessions: manual therapy (massage), electrostimulation (10-20 min with possible repetition on the same day), ultrasound therapy, laser therapy, hydrotherapy, and assisted gait in supportive devices or on treadmills to stimulate and relearn walking, which was the main focus of the study...

Objective: This study evaluated the feasibility of a combination of pelvic binder and rectal balloon compression in managing fatal venous hemorrhage in a canine model of pelvic fracture. Methods: Rectums from humans (rectal cancer patients), swine, and canines were retrieved to determine their elasticity by measuring their stress and strain. Canines were selected as the animal model in this study because their rectum demonstrated more reversible strain than swine rectum. Doppler ultrasound was used to assess the effect of rectal balloon volume on the blood flow of pelvic iliac blood vessels in three canines...
